How to use dead space in luggage
To use dead space in luggage, fill every hollow and gap with small soft items: stuff shoes with socks and innerwear, pack the troughs between handle tubes with belts and chargers, fill hats with scarves, nest small bags inside larger ones and push rolled items into corners. These gaps can add up to several litres in a typical suitcase, enough for a full extra outfit.
Dead space is any empty area your clothes cannot reach on their own. Recovering it means you can travel with a smaller bag, avoid checked luggage fees and keep everything tightly packed so it does not shift and crease.
Think of it as a two-step process. First, pack the large items: cubes, folded stacks and shoes. Second, look for every remaining gap and fill it with something you already planned to bring. You should not add new items to fill space; you simply relocate small things into the gaps they fit best.

1. Inside your shoes
Shoes are the biggest source of dead space. A pair of sneakers can hold several pairs of socks, a set of innerwear or a rolled charger. Heels can hold jewellery pouches, a lipstick or a small perfume wrapped in a sock. Boots can hold rolled T-shirts, leggings or a scarf.
Stuffing shoes also helps them keep their shape, so they arrive without crushed toe boxes. Use a shoe bag over the filled shoe to keep soles away from clothes.
Make a habit of filling shoes before anything else. If you leave them until the end, you will have already packed your socks elsewhere and the shoes will travel empty. Treat each pair as a small container that needs its own contents decided at the start.
2. The handle troughs
In a trolley or spinner, the telescopic handle tubes create two channels along the back of the case. Most people leave them empty because clothes do not lie flat over them. Fill them with long, narrow items: rolled socks, belts, a compact umbrella, a pouch of cables, a folded tote or a pair of flat sandals.
Filling the troughs gives the base layer a flat surface, which helps folded clothes on top stay smooth, and keeps weight low for better balance.
The amount of space in the troughs varies a lot between models. Some premium cases have flat interiors with the handle tubes hidden outside the packing area, leaving no troughs at all; others have deep channels. Neither is wrong, but knowing your case helps you plan which small items will fill them.
3. Corners and edges
The rounded corners of a hard-shell case and the ends of a duffle are awkward spaces. Rolled items fit these perfectly: socks, underwear, scarves, a swimsuit. Push them into the corners after placing your main cubes or stacks.
Along the edges, slide in flat items like a sarong, a pashmina or a thin cardigan. They fill the gap between your clothes and the shell and act as padding.
Duffles and weekenders have their own dead spaces: the curved ends, the area under the handles and the gap above packing cubes. Rolled knits and scarves fill the ends; a flat item such as a sarong or a folded tote slides along the top. A bag filled this way keeps a neat rectangular shape instead of sagging in the middle.
In a backpack, the dead space is usually at the bottom corners and around the frame. A rolled sleeping layer or a pair of sandals in the base fills the corners and gives the pack a stable bottom.
4. Hats, bags and hollow items
A sun hat travels crown-up on top of your clothes, and its crown can be filled with socks, a swimsuit or sunglasses in a case. This also stops the hat from being crushed. A structured clutch or small handbag packed in the suitcase can hold jewellery, a wallet or a scarf.
Hollow items such as a reusable water bottle or a travel mug can hold tiny items such as earrings, hair ties or a phone cable.
Handbags are especially worth filling. An empty structured bag loses its shape under the weight of other luggage, while a bag filled with soft items stays firm. Wrap the filled bag in its dust bag and lay it in the centre of the case.
Even a coffee mug or a glass jar bought as a souvenir can be filled with socks or wrapped jewellery before packing, which protects it from inside and uses its space at the same time.
5. Bag in a bag, pockets and cubes
Pack a foldable tote, a packable duffle or a small backpack flat inside your case. It takes almost no space on the outbound journey and becomes a beach bag, a day bag or extra luggage for shopping on the way home. Nesting a smaller cabin case inside a large check-in case is the bigger version of this trick for luggage sets.
Pockets inside the lid and divider are also often underused. A zip pocket can hold flat items such as documents, a swimsuit, a thin scarf or a pack of face masks.
A toiletry case usually has gaps between bottles. Fill them with cotton pads, a flat comb, a few hair ties or sheet masks. Packing cubes rarely fill completely either; push a rolled pair of socks into each end.
Do not overfill to the point the cube bulges, which wastes space at the corners of your case. Aim for firm and rectangular.
Front pockets on soft cabin trolleys are another area people forget. They suit flat items you may need during the journey, such as a cardigan, a book or a laptop sleeve, but avoid overfilling them, as a bulging front pocket can push a cabin bag over the sizer dimensions at the gate.
6. Wear your bulk, and other tricks
Wear your bulkiest pieces on the plane: jacket, boots, jeans. Use your coat pockets for a phone, passport, earphones and a lip balm. A travel scarf doubles as a blanket and a pillow.
Swap bulky items for compact versions: a microfibre towel instead of a cotton one, a solid shampoo instead of a bottle, a slim card wallet instead of a large purse.
A travel jacket with large internal pockets or a scarf with a hidden zip pocket can carry a surprising amount: a passport, a phone, a power bank and earbuds. On flights with strict cabin limits, this keeps essential items with you without adding to your bag, though crew may still ask you to stow larger items.
Think about your travel outfit as part of the packing plan. A layered outfit of a tee, a shirt and a jacket, with jeans and sneakers, carries three or four items that would otherwise take up a full packing cube.
7. When not to fill dead space
Leave some space if you plan to shop. A suitcase packed solid on the outbound trip has nowhere to put souvenirs. Avoid filling gaps with heavy items if you are near a weight limit; dead space recovers volume, not weight allowance. Indian domestic carriers typically allow around 7 kg in the cabin; confirm with your airline.
Also avoid packing fragile items in gaps near the shell or wheels, where impacts are strongest.
There is a balance between a tightly packed case and a crammed one. Tight packing means no movement and no wasted space. Crammed packing means the zip strains and the shell bulges. Fill gaps with soft, light items, and stop when the case closes with gentle pressure.
Choose luggage that wastes less space
Some suitcases have less dead space built in. Look for flat interiors, narrow handle systems, square corners and internal pockets. Duffles with structured ends and shoe compartments also make the most of space.
Explore our luxury travel bags edit for cabin trolleys and duffles with efficient interiors, and our tote bags for a foldable second bag that fits in any gap.
Before your next trip, empty your case and look at its interior with fresh eyes. Note the troughs, pockets and corners, and plan what will go in each. That small exercise often reveals enough space to move from a checked bag to a cabin bag.
