The essentials first
To walk in heels all night without pain, choose a heel with a stable base, a secure strap and a platform if it is above 8 cm; break the shoes in at home; add a gel cushion under the ball of the foot; and walk heel-to-toe with short steps and a straight posture. Plan breaks, and keep flats in your bag for the journey home.
Heels can lift a party look, but nobody looks good limping by midnight. These eleven tips cover buying, preparing, walking and surviving the specific floors and situations of Indian parties.
None of this means you must suffer. The right pair, good preparation and a few walking techniques can make even an all-night wedding comfortable.

Tip 1 to 3: Buy the right heel
Tip 1: start with the heel shape. Block heels, wedges and platforms spread your weight; stilettos concentrate it. If you rarely wear heels, choose block heels or kitten heels first.
Tip 2: check the pitch. The angle between the heel and the ball of the foot matters more than height. A 10 cm heel with a 2 cm platform has an 8 cm pitch and feels more comfortable than a 9 cm heel with no platform.
Tip 3: shop in the evening, when your feet are slightly swollen, and try both shoes. Walk on a hard floor, not a carpet. There should be a finger's width of space at the toe and no slipping at the heel. Ankle straps, T-bars and Mary Jane straps keep your foot from sliding forward.
Look for shoes with a heel placed directly under the centre of your heel bone, not too far back. A well-placed heel feels balanced; a badly placed one tips you forward or backward.
Tip 4 and 5: Break them in at home
Tip 4: wear new heels at home for 20 to 30 minutes a day for a week before the party, ideally with thin socks. Walk on stairs and stand while cooking. This softens the material and shows where they rub.
Tip 5: target hot spots. If straps rub, place a soft blister plaster on your skin in advance. Leather can be gently stretched with a shoe stretcher or by wearing them with thick socks and warming the tight area with a hairdryer for a few seconds, then walking until cool.
Before an important event, wear your shoes for a full evening at home, including standing at the kitchen counter and walking up and down stairs. Any discomfort that appears after two hours will be much worse at hour five of a wedding.
Tip 6 and 7: Add support
Tip 6: insoles and cushions. Gel pads under the ball of the foot reduce burning. Heel grips stop slipping. Arch support inserts help if you have flat feet. Clear silicone versions are invisible in open sandals.
Tip 7: prep your feet. Moisturise but do not apply oily cream right before wearing heels, as your foot will slide. Taping the third and fourth toes together with medical tape is a trick some stylists use to reduce pressure on the ball of the foot; it can help with pointed pumps.
Foot powder or an anti-chafing balm on the parts of the foot that rub helps a lot in humid weather, when sweaty feet slide and blister more easily.
Tip 8: Walk like you mean it
Stand tall with shoulders back and core gently engaged. Land on the heel first, roll through to the ball of the foot and push off from the toes. Take shorter steps than in flats and walk as if on a straight line, one foot slightly in front of the other.
Look ahead, not down. Keep knees soft, not locked. On stairs, place the whole foot on the step going up and only the ball of the foot going down, holding the railing. Practise in front of a mirror for a few minutes before the event.
Practise for five minutes a day in the week before the event. Muscle memory makes a real difference, and your walk will look more natural in photos.
Ankle and calf stretches before you leave home loosen the muscles that work hardest in heels. Point and flex each foot ten times and roll the ankles gently in circles.
Tip 9: Know your party floors
Grass at lawn weddings and garden parties swallows stilettos. Choose block heels or wedges, or slip on heel protectors that stop sinking. Marble and polished banquet floors are slippery; scuff new soles lightly with sandpaper or add a grip pad. Cobblestones and uneven terraces call for block heels.
Dance floors are where most injuries happen. Choose a 5 to 7 cm heel with a secure ankle strap for sangeets and clubs.
Carpeted areas can catch heels too. Lift your feet slightly higher than usual and avoid dragging, especially at entrances with mats and rugs.
Never step straight from a dry floor onto a wet one in heels; slow down and shorten your step until you are on dry ground again.
Tip 10 and 11: Pace yourself and have a plan B
Tip 10: sit when you can and rotate your ankles gently under the table to improve circulation. Stand on one foot at a time to give the other a rest, and avoid standing still for long periods, which is harder on feet than walking.
Tip 11: carry foldable flats or slip-on sandals in your sling bag or car. Changing for the drive home or for the last hour of dancing is sensible, not defeat. Many brides and guests now wear embellished sneakers or juttis for the later part of a wedding.
After the party, soak your feet in warm water with a pinch of salt, massage the arches and stretch your calves. This helps you recover faster for back-to-back functions during wedding season.
Heel heights explained for beginners
Kitten heels, about 3 to 5 cm, are the easiest place to start. They give a little lift and elegance without changing how you walk much, making them ideal for office parties and long dinners.
Mid heels, about 5 to 8 cm, are the sweet spot for most parties. They lengthen the leg noticeably while staying comfortable, especially as block heels or with an ankle strap.
High heels, 8 to 10 cm, need practice and are best for events with plenty of seating, such as receptions and dinners. Add a small platform to ease the pitch.
Very high heels above 10 cm should almost always have a platform, and are best saved for photo-heavy events where you will not be walking or dancing for long.
Choosing the heel for the outfit
Mini dresses suit stilettos and block heels; midi dresses look best with pointed pumps and strappy sandals; maxi dresses and lehengas need platforms or block heels for height without strain. Metallic and nude tones are the most versatile.
If comfort is your top priority, look for padded footbeds, soft leather or fabric uppers, wider toe boxes and adjustable straps. A mid-height block heel in gold or nude is the most comfortable all-rounder for Indian parties.
Indian wedding guests often need one pair for multiple outfits. A gold or nude mid-height block heel works with lehengas, sarees and gowns, so it is worth investing in a comfortable, well-made pair.
Comfort features to look for when shopping include a cushioned insole, a slightly wider toe box, soft leather or fabric linings and adjustable buckles. A shoe that costs a little more but has these features will be worn far more often.
Finally, keep your heels in good repair. Replace worn heel tips at a cobbler before party season; a worn tip makes heels slippery and noisy, and it can damage the heel itself.
