How to wash a denim jacket: the quick answer
To wash a denim jacket, button it fully, turn it inside out, and wash it in cold water on a gentle cycle with a mild liquid detergent, or hand wash it in a bucket. Reshape it while damp and dry it on a sturdy hanger or flat in shade. Wash rarely, perhaps every few months for a layering jacket, and spot clean in between.
Jackets are worn over other clothes, so they rarely get as dirty as jeans. The collar, cuffs and underarms collect most sweat and makeup, and these are easy to clean on their own. Washing less keeps the colour, the shape of the shoulders and the crisp collar that makes a denim jacket look sharp.
Before washing, check the care label inside the jacket. Most plain denim jackets say cold machine wash, but jackets with leather patches, faux fur collars, quilted linings or heavy embroidery may say hand wash or dry clean. Following the label protects both the fabric and any trims.

Spot clean first
For a lipstick or foundation mark on the collar, dab micellar water with a cotton pad, then a drop of dish soap and a damp cloth. For sweat around the collar and cuffs, mix a little detergent in cool water and scrub gently with a soft toothbrush, then wipe with a clean damp cloth.
Food spills on the front can be blotted, treated with dish soap and rinsed from the inside. Let the area dry on a hanger. Spot cleaning keeps a jacket fresh for many more wears and saves a full wash.
Underarm odour is the most common reason people wash a jacket. Mix one part white vinegar with one part water in a spray bottle, mist the underarm area inside the jacket and hang it in fresh air. The vinegar neutralises the smell and evaporates completely as it dries.
For a white or light-wash denim jacket, the cuffs and collar show grime faster. A paste of baking soda and a few drops of liquid detergent, scrubbed gently with a soft toothbrush and rinsed with a damp cloth, brightens these areas without a full wash.
Hand washing a denim jacket
Fill a bucket or bathroom tub with cool water and a capful of mild liquid detergent. Button the jacket, turn it inside out and submerge it. Soak for 20 to 30 minutes, squeezing gently. Pay extra attention to the collar and cuffs with a soft brush.
Drain and rinse in clean water two or three times. Do not wring, which twists the shoulder seams. Instead, press water out, then roll the jacket in a large towel and press to remove more.
Hand washing is also the best choice for vintage denim jackets you have picked up from thrift stores or inherited from family. Older fabric can be fragile at the collar and cuffs, and a gentle soak cleans them without stressing seams that have already seen years of wear.
Machine washing a denim jacket
If it is plain denim with no lining or embellishment, machine washing is fine. Empty the pockets, button every button including the cuffs and pocket flaps, turn it inside out and wash it on its own or with one or two other dark denim pieces. Choose cold water, the delicate cycle and a low spin speed.
Metal buttons can knock against the drum, so a large mesh laundry bag or an old pillowcase tied shut adds protection. Remove it promptly when the cycle ends to avoid deep creases.
Wash denim jackets separately from your jeans if the jacket is a lighter wash, because dark jeans can bleed dye onto it. A light blue jacket picking up a darker tint is very hard to reverse. Matching washes can go together, ideally with a colour-catcher sheet.
Sherpa-lined, embellished and patched jackets
Sherpa or faux-fur lined jackets, popular for north Indian winters, need care because the lining can mat. Hand wash or use a cold delicate cycle inside a mesh bag. Afterwards, brush the sherpa gently with a soft clothes brush while damp to fluff it, and dry it flat. Never use heat, which melts or clumps synthetic fleece.
Jackets with beads, pearls, studs, rhinestones, painted art or embroidered patches should be hand washed inside out, very gently, or simply spot cleaned. Some printed or painted designs crack with machine washing. Check the care tag; some embellished jackets are labelled dry clean only.
Jackets with leather or faux leather brand patches need care too. Water can stiffen or crack the patch, so keep the jacket on a gentle, short cycle or hand wash, and avoid soaking that area. A little leather conditioner on the dry patch afterwards keeps it supple.
For removable faux-fur collars, unbutton or unzip them before washing and clean them separately by hand with a little gentle shampoo. Rinse, press water out with a towel, then let the collar dry flat and brush it gently once dry to restore its fluff.
Drying and reshaping
While the jacket is damp, pull the seams straight, square the shoulders and smooth the collar and cuffs flat. Hang it on a wide wooden or padded hanger that supports the shoulders, or lay it flat on a towel on a bed or drying rack.
Dry in shade, inside out. Avoid hanging heavy wet jackets on thin hangers, which leave shoulder bumps. In monsoon, keep it under a fan and turn it every few hours, because the collar and double-layered yoke dry slowly. Do not tumble dry, as it can shrink the jacket and make sleeves shorter.
If your jacket has stretched at the cuffs or hem band, a warm rinse followed by drying flat can tighten them slightly. Pin the hem band to its correct width on a towel while it dries. This is a gentle way to restore shape without risking shrinkage of the whole jacket.
Reviving a stiff or misshapen jacket
Stiff after air drying? Toss it in the dryer on no-heat air fluff for ten minutes if you have one, or simply wear it around the house for an hour. A splash of white vinegar in the final rinse also softens denim. For a collar that has curled, press it flat inside out with an iron on medium heat.
For a jacket that smells musty from storage, hang it in fresh air in shade for a day, or mist it lightly with a mix of water and a little vinegar, then let it dry fully.
If you want to soften a brand-new stiff jacket, wear it often around the house, roll the sleeves up and down, and give it a cold wash with a vinegar rinse. Most rigid jackets soften considerably after a few weeks and start to take on the shape of your arms and shoulders.
How often should you wash it?
A denim jacket worn as a layer over tops and dresses can go many wears without washing, sometimes a whole season, with spot cleaning and airing. A jacket worn directly against the skin, or in hot and humid weather, may need washing every few weeks.
If you have a vintage or raw denim jacket you love, follow raw denim principles: wash rarely, by hand, in cold water. This keeps the colour rich and the fades personal.
Rotate jackets between seasons. In north Indian winters a sherpa or heavy denim jacket gets daily use, so plan one full wash mid-season and one before storing it. In summer, a light denim jacket for air-conditioned spaces may need washing only once or twice a season.
