The short version
To wash t-shirts without shrinking, turn them inside out, wash in cold water below 30 degrees on a gentle or quick cycle with a low spin, then air dry in shade, flat or on a wide hanger. Heat, agitation and wringing are the three things that shrink cotton, so remove all three from your routine.
Shrinkage is not random. It follows clear rules, and once you know them you can keep a favourite tee the same size for years. This step-by-step guide covers machine and hand washing, drying in Indian conditions, and how to rescue a tee that has already shrunk.

Why do cotton t-shirts shrink?
During manufacturing, cotton yarns are pulled and stretched under tension as they are spun, knitted and finished. When you wash a tee in warm water and tumble it about, the fibres relax back toward their natural, shorter state. That is called relaxation shrinkage and it mostly happens in the first one to three washes.
Heat speeds it up. Hot water swells the cotton fibres, and hot air in a dryer makes them contract as they dry. Mechanical action, the tumbling and spinning, encourages the knit loops to tighten and pack closer together, shortening the tee lengthwise.
Knitted fabrics like t-shirt jersey usually shrink more in length than width. That is why a shrunk tee often looks suddenly cropped, with the hem riding above your jeans waistband.
Blends and synthetics behave differently. Polyester barely shrinks, modal and bamboo viscose can shrink if washed hot, and cotton-poly blends shrink less than pure cotton.
Fit also hides or reveals shrinkage. A relaxed tee that loses a centimetre is barely noticeable, while a fitted tee that loses the same amount can suddenly feel tight across the bust or short at the waist. That is why fitted tees need the gentlest washing.
Step 1: read the label and sort
Check the care label first. Look for wash temperature, whether tumble drying is allowed and the fibre content. If a tee says pre-shrunk, bio-washed or compacted, it has been treated to reduce shrinkage, but cold washing still helps.
Sort tees by colour: whites and light shades, mid colours and darks. Then sort again by weight. Wash tees with other light items rather than heavy jeans and towels, which create friction and require longer, harsher cycles.
Turn each tee inside out. This protects prints and the outer surface from rubbing and reduces pilling and fading.
Empty pockets of the jeans or shorts in the same load. A forgotten pen or lipstick can ruin a whole load of light tees.
If you live somewhere with hard water, consider using a little more liquid detergent or a water softener. Hard water leaves minerals in the fabric that make tees stiff, which can feel like shrinkage even when the size has not changed.
Step 2: machine settings that prevent shrinking
Water temperature: choose cold, or 20 to 30 degrees at most. Most Indian front-load machines default to 40 degrees on the cotton programme, which can shrink untreated cotton. Change it manually or use a synthetics, delicates or quick wash programme.
Spin speed: keep it at 800 rpm or lower for tees. High spin twists and stretches fabric and causes deep creases. Top-loaders on a gentle or delicate setting are usually fine.
Load size: fill the drum about three-quarters full. Overloading causes friction and uneven washing; underloading lets tees slap around too much.
Detergent: use a mild liquid detergent. Powdered detergents can leave residue in cold water. Skip fabric softener for performance tees; for cotton, a small amount is fine occasionally.
If your machine has a 'cotton' programme at 40 or 60 degrees, avoid it for tees. These programmes are designed for towels and bedsheets. A 'mixed' or 'colours' programme at cold temperature is usually a better choice for everyday tees.
Step 3: hand washing without shrinking
Fill a bucket with cold tap water and dissolve a little liquid detergent. Submerge the tees and let them soak for 10 to 15 minutes, no longer.
Gently swish and squeeze the fabric. Avoid scrubbing with a brush or rubbing on a washing stone, which stretches and roughens cotton. For a stain, rub only that spot gently between your fingers.
Rinse in fresh cold water until the water runs clear. Do not wring the tee into a tight rope; press it against the side of the bucket instead, then roll it in a dry towel to absorb extra water.
Hand washing is ideal for premium cotton, modal, bamboo and tees with delicate prints or embroidery.
Avoid soaking tees overnight in detergent. Long soaks can loosen dye and weaken fibres, and they do not clean better than a short soak followed by gentle agitation.
Step 4: drying in Indian sun and monsoon
Never tumble dry cotton tees on high heat. If you must use a dryer, choose the lowest heat or air-only setting and remove them while slightly damp.
For line drying, hang tees in shade or indirect light. Strong afternoon sun on a terrace in May not only fades colour but also heats the fibres, which can add a little shrinkage and stiffness. Early morning or evening sun is gentler.
Use broad plastic or padded hangers inserted from the hem, or drape the tee over the line at the waist. Pegging by the shoulders leaves bumps; hanging by the neck stretches it.
During the monsoon, dry indoors with a fan running and leave space between items. Avoid placing tees directly on hot surfaces or over room heaters, which can scorch and shrink them. Make sure they are fully dry before folding to avoid musty smells.
Sunlight is not all bad. A short spell of gentle morning sun freshens whites and helps cotton smell clean. The problem is long hours in harsh afternoon heat, especially for coloured and dark tees.
If you use a clothes dryer in winter, take tees out while still slightly damp and let them finish drying flat. This reduces both shrinkage and wrinkles.
How to unshrink a t-shirt
Fill a basin with lukewarm water and add about two tablespoons of hair conditioner or baby shampoo. Soak the tee for 30 minutes; this relaxes the fibres.
Without rinsing, gently squeeze out water and roll the tee in a towel. Then lay it on a dry towel and gently stretch it in the direction it shrank, usually length first, then width. Work little by little.
Weigh down the hem and shoulders with books or heavy objects and let it dry flat. You may recover a few centimetres, but a tee that shrank significantly may not fully return to size.
Afterwards, always wash that tee cold and air dry to prevent repeat shrinkage.
Buying tees that shrink less
Look for labels like pre-shrunk, bio-washed, compacted cotton or enzyme-washed. These finishes reduce shrinkage significantly. Cotton blends with modal or polyester also shrink less than pure cotton.
If a pure cotton tee is not marked pre-shrunk and fits exactly in length at purchase, consider sizing up or choosing a slightly longer cut. Read reviews for mentions of shrinkage after the first wash.
Heavier, tightly knitted tees tend to shrink less dramatically than loose, thin knits. A well-made 180 to 220 GSM cotton often holds its size better.
Finally, wash new tees once before altering or hemming them, so you know their final size.
Keep the original receipt and tags for a few days after the first wash. If a tee shrinks drastically despite cold washing, many sellers will accept it as a quality complaint.
