Island-hopping ferry luggage: the answer
The best island-hopping ferry luggage is a soft, water-resistant duffle or travel backpack of 40 to 60 litres, a small dry bag for electronics and documents, and a beach tote for day use. Ferries, speedboats and jetties are hard on wheeled suitcases: gangways are narrow, decks are wet, and many island arrivals involve walking on sand or wooden piers where wheels are useless.
Island trips are hugely popular among Indian travellers: Port Blair, Havelock and Neil in the Andamans; Bali, the Gili Islands and Nusa Penida; Phuket, Phi Phi and Krabi in Thailand; and the Maldives, where resort transfers by speedboat or seaplane are part of the experience. Each crossing means lifting bags on and off boats, often in heat and spray, so luggage choice affects your comfort every day.
Ferry operators set their own baggage policies, and seaplane transfers often have strict weight limits, so always check before travel.
The trick is to accept that islands reward light travel more than almost any other trip. Every extra kilogram has to be lifted onto a boat, carried along a pier and dragged across sand to a beach hut or villa. Women who pack lightly enjoy the crossings; those with big suitcases spend their energy wrestling luggage.

Why soft bags beat suitcases on boats
Large hard suitcases are awkward to carry over gangways, take a lot of space in boat luggage areas, and can slide on wet decks. Their wheels are useless on sand, pebbles and rough jetties. Soft duffles and backpacks can be carried on the shoulder or back, squeeze into tight luggage holds and are easier for crew to stack.
Many island ferries store luggage in a common area near the entrance or on the deck. Bags may get splashed or rained on. Water-resistant nylon or coated canvas with sealed zips copes far better than untreated leather or fabric. A rain cover adds protection when bags travel on open decks or on the roof of a speedboat.
If you prefer wheels for the airport legs, a soft wheeled duffle with backpack straps gives you both options.
Choose a duffle with a wide U-shaped opening so you can see everything inside without tipping it out on a damp floor, plus end handles that let crew pass it hand to hand. Compression straps keep the load tight when the bag is half full, which stops it shifting on a rolling deck and makes it easier to carry over your shoulder.
A shoulder strap with a non-slip pad is worth checking, since you will carry the bag much more than you wheel it on island trips.
Dry bags and protecting electronics
A roll-top dry bag of 10 to 20 litres is the island traveller's best friend. Keep your phone, camera, power bank, passport and cash inside it on speedboat transfers, snorkelling trips and rainy crossings. Even if a wave soaks the deck, your essentials stay dry.
For longer ferries, a waterproof phone pouch lets you take photos without risk. Pack chargers and cables in zip bags inside the main duffle. Sand and salt water are enemies of electronics, so wipe devices and keep them in pouches when on the beach. Silica gel packets in the electronics pouch absorb humidity on multi-day trips.
Keep medicines and seasickness tablets in the dry bag too, so they are within reach on choppy crossings.
Sizing your bag for island trips
Island wardrobes are light: swimwear, cover-ups, linen and cotton dresses, shorts and sandals. A 40-litre bag is plenty for a week for most women, and 50 to 60 litres suits longer trips or couples sharing. Smaller bags are also more likely to stay within seaplane or small boat weight limits, which can be lower than airline allowances.
If you fly into a gateway like Port Blair, Bali or Male with a larger suitcase, consider leaving it at your first hotel and island-hopping with a duffle. Many hotels store luggage for guests returning later. This approach keeps ferry transfers light and fast.
Remember that what you wear on the ferry counts too: quick-dry clothes and sandals that grip wet decks are ideal.
Maldives seaplane transfers are a special case. Resorts and operators often publish a combined baggage allowance for checked and hand luggage that can be lower than your international flight's allowance, with charges for excess. Honeymooners who arrive with two heavy suitcases each can be surprised. Read your resort's transfer information carefully and pack to that limit, or arrange paid excess in advance.
Island-hopping packing list
Clothing: three swimsuits, two cover-ups or kaftans, four to five light tops or dresses, two pairs of shorts or skirts, one evening outfit, a light long-sleeve layer for sun and air-conditioning, sleepwear and innerwear. Footwear: waterproof sandals with grip, flip-flops and one pair of light sneakers for walks.
Essentials: reef-safe sunscreen, after-sun lotion, insect repellent, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, a quick-dry towel, a dry bag, a waterproof phone pouch, seasickness tablets, a basic first-aid kit, a reusable water bottle and a foldable beach tote. Cash is useful on smaller islands where card payments and ATMs may be limited.
Pack a small zip bag of laundry detergent for washing swimwear and quick-dry items.
For evenings, a simple maxi dress, a flowing co-ord or a lightweight kaftan works across beach bars and resort restaurants, paired with flat sandals and a statement earring. Island dining is relaxed, but a sunset dinner deserves something beyond swimwear and shorts, and these pieces weigh almost nothing.
If you plan to dive or snorkel, decide whether to bring your own mask, which takes space, or rent locally. Many travellers bring only a mask and leave fins and wetsuits to the dive shop.
Day bags for beaches and boat tours
A beach tote or small backpack carries your towel, sunscreen, water, snacks and a change of clothes on boat tours and beach days. Choose a material that shrugs off sand and salt water, such as coated canvas, mesh, nylon or straw with a waterproof lining.
A crossbody sling keeps cash, cards and phone secure in busy jetties and markets. On snorkelling and diving trips, leave valuables in the hotel safe and carry only the essentials in a dry bag. Many tour operators provide lockers or storage on the boat; ask before you go.
After each beach day, rinse the tote and let it dry fully before packing it away.
Handling wet and sandy luggage
Sand gets everywhere on island trips. Shake out bags before packing, keep a separate pouch for wet swimwear and use a mesh laundry bag that lets sand fall out. Store shoes in plastic or shoe bags to keep sand away from clothes.
Dry wet bags in the shade, not in harsh sunlight, which can fade fabric and dry out leather trims. Wipe zips with fresh water after salty crossings; salt can corrode metal and make zips stiff. At home, wash the duffle with mild soap if the fabric allows, and store it fully dry to prevent mould.
A small brush helps clean sand from seams and pockets before you fly home.
A useful habit is to keep a small packing cube labelled for wet items and to rotate swimsuits so one is always dry. Rinse swimwear in fresh water after every swim to protect the fabric from salt and chlorine. Hang it in the shade on a balcony or bathroom line rather than packing it damp, which leads to odours in a closed bag on the next crossing.
Island luggage mistakes to avoid
Bringing a large hard suitcase on ferries, packing electronics without waterproof protection, forgetting seasickness tablets and ignoring seaplane weight limits are the most common mistakes. Others include carrying too many bags, choosing leather that stains with salt water and leaving valuables in bags stored on open decks.
Another error is not checking ferry timetables and luggage policies in advance. Ferries may be cancelled due to weather, and you may need to carry bags back to a hotel or wait at a jetty, so keep luggage light and manageable.
Finally, do not pack sunscreen loose; heat and pressure can make bottles leak over clothes.
Pack for the islands
A soft, water-resistant duffle, a dry bag and a breezy beach tote are the core of island-hopping luggage. Keep it light, protect your electronics and enjoy the crossings.
