Japan trip luggage: what you need to know
For a Japan trip, the best luggage is a compact 55 to 65 cm spinner plus a day backpack, because Japanese hotel rooms are small, train stations involve long walks and stairs, and the Shinkansen has rules for oversized bags. Japan also has excellent luggage forwarding services that let you send bags between hotels.
Indian travellers to Japan usually fly to Tokyo or Osaka with a connection or a direct flight, and plan a Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka route with a day trip to Nara or Hiroshima. That means at least two Shinkansen journeys and several hotel changes.
The good news: Japan is safe, punctual and organised. With the right bag and a little planning, moving between cities is a pleasure.
Japan also rewards travelling in a slightly smaller group of bags. Station corridors at Tokyo, Shinjuku and Kyoto are long and crowded, with escalators and lifts sometimes far from your platform. One compact spinner and one backpack per person is the classic combination recommended by seasoned Japan travellers, and it suits Indian visitors perfectly.

Shinkansen luggage rules
Shinkansen lines connecting Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and beyond have introduced rules for oversized luggage. Bags above a certain combined size may need a reserved seat with an oversized luggage area. Check the current rules on the official railway website before booking, as they are specific.
A medium spinner of 65 cm or less usually fits in overhead racks or at your feet without special booking. That alone makes a strong case for travelling with a compact suitcase rather than a large one.
Platforms are busy and trains stop briefly. Have your bag ready at the door, and practise lifting it to shoulder height at home before the trip.
Reserved seats near the back of each car on many Shinkansen trains have space behind the last row that is ideal for medium bags. Booking these seats when you reserve gives you a secure spot for your suitcase within sight. For Tokyo to Kyoto, the journey is around two to three hours, so keeping your bag close is reassuring.
Luggage forwarding: travel light between cities
Japan's takkyubin luggage forwarding services allow you to send suitcases from one hotel to the next, usually arriving the following day. Many hotels and convenience stores accept bags for forwarding. This lets you travel with only a small overnight bag on the Shinkansen.
Plan an overnight bag for the gap: a 25 to 35 litre backpack or a small weekender with a change of clothes, toiletries, medicines and chargers. Check forwarding timelines and costs before booking, as they vary by distance.
Forwarding is especially useful for families and for anyone with a large suitcase, and saves stress on crowded stations.
Luggage forwarding is also available from Narita, Haneda and Kansai airports to your hotel. If you arrive tired after an overnight flight from India, sending your suitcase directly to the hotel lets you take the train into the city with only a backpack and start exploring immediately.
For the Kyoto to Osaka hop, which is short, many travellers simply carry a compact spinner on the local train, but for Tokyo to Hiroshima or Kanazawa, forwarding saves real effort, especially with elderly parents or young children in the group.
Compact hotel rooms and packing smart
Japanese city hotel rooms, especially business hotels in Tokyo, can be very small, sometimes barely enough to open a large suitcase on the floor. A spinner that opens like a clamshell needs floor space; one with a split lid or a top-opening section is easier.
Packing cubes are essential. Keep one cube for the next day's outfit and open only what you need. Store dirty laundry in a separate bag; coin laundries are common and many hotels have laundry machines.
Leave room in your suitcase for shopping. Japanese skincare, stationery, snacks and fashion are hard to resist.
A clever trick for small rooms: unpack your toiletries into a hanging organiser and hang it on the bathroom door. Japanese bathrooms are compact and immaculate, with little counter space, and a hanging kit keeps everything visible and easy to pack up when you move on.
What to pack for Japan by season
Spring (March to May) brings cherry blossoms and mild weather; pack a trench coat, light knits, trousers and comfortable sneakers. Summer is hot and humid; pack breathable linen, a hat, a small towel and a portable fan. Autumn is mild with beautiful foliage; layer knits and a light jacket.
Winter is cold, especially in Hokkaido and the Japanese Alps; pack thermals, a down jacket, gloves and waterproof boots.
Year-round, Japanese style leans neat and modest. Long skirts, trousers, tailored jackets and clean sneakers fit in everywhere, from Ginza to Kyoto temples.
In cherry blossom season, March to April, temperatures swing between cool mornings and mild afternoons, and evenings can be chilly. A trench or a light down jacket over a knit dress or trousers with a blouse works perfectly. Pastel and neutral tones look lovely in hanami photos under the blossoms at Ueno Park or along Kyoto's Philosopher's Path.
Rainy season, roughly June to mid-July in much of Japan, brings humid, drizzly days. Pack quick-dry trousers, a light waterproof jacket and shoes that will not be ruined by puddles. Typhoon season in late summer and early autumn can disrupt trains and flights, so keep a flexible plan and an overnight kit handy.
Shoes off: what to wear for temples and ryokans
You will remove your shoes at temples, ryokans, some restaurants and fitting rooms. Slip-on sneakers or loafers save time. Pack clean, presentable socks, since they will be on display.
Ryokans, traditional inns, often provide yukata robes and slippers. Pack light sleepwear and minimal toiletries if staying at one.
Bring a small bag for your shoes when visiting temples, as some ask you to carry them with you.
Some restaurants and homes have tatami floors where you sit on cushions. A midi dress or wide-leg trousers is more comfortable than a short skirt in that setting. Choose outfits that allow you to sit cross-legged or kneel without fuss, particularly in Kyoto.
Day bag essentials in Japan
A light 15 to 25 litre backpack or a crossbody with zip works well for sightseeing. Carry a reusable bag for rubbish, as public bins are rare in Japan. Add a small towel, a refillable bottle, a power bank and an IC transit card.
Cash is still useful in many smaller shops and temples, so a slim wallet with a coin pocket helps.
Keep a portable umbrella; Japanese rain can be sudden, especially in June.
Convenience stores, konbini, sell almost everything you might forget, from socks and umbrellas to toiletries and snacks, at reasonable prices. That means you can pack lighter for Japan than for many other destinations; if you forget something, the nearest konbini is often around the corner.
An IC card such as Suica or ICOCA, loaded onto your phone or as a physical card, covers trains, buses and convenience store purchases, which reduces the cash you carry and keeps your day bag light.
Choosing Japan-friendly luggage
Look for a compact, lightweight polycarbonate spinner with a TSA lock, smooth quiet wheels and a sturdy handle. Brands such as Samsonite, Delsey, Mokobara and American Tourister offer compact spinners and soft weekenders, with quality options starting from around ₹6,000.
A medium spinner plus a backpack covers most Japan itineraries; add a foldable duffle for shopping hauls.
Explore our luxury travel bags to choose a pair that works for Japan and future Asia trips.
Japan is also a great place to buy luggage, with many Japanese and international brands available, but prices may not be lower than in India, and you will need to carry it back. Better to arrive with a good spinner and simply add a foldable duffle for purchases.
Consider the colour too. Most travellers carry black, so a soft sage, beige, navy or burgundy spinner stands out on airport belts and in hotel luggage rooms where bags are lined up for forwarding. A name tag in English with your hotel details helps if a bag is misplaced.
