In India, women's jeans sizes usually follow waist measurement in inches: size 26 fits about a 26 inch waist, size 28 about 28, and so on. Roughly, 24 to 26 equals XS, 26 to 28 equals S, 28 to 30 equals M, 30 to 32 equals L, 32 to 34 equals XL, 34 to 36 equals XXL and 36 upward covers 3XL to 5XL. Hips usually measure about 8 to 10 inches more than the waist size.

These are approximate because every brand grades differently. Use this guide as a starting point, then check each brand's chart.

Why is this so confusing? Indian brands use inches, letters or both; international brands may use UK, US or EU sizes; and every brand has its own fit model. A conversion chart helps you get close, but the brand's own chart always has the final word.

Waist size to letter size

Size 24: waist around 24 inches, hips around 33 to 34, XXS or XS. Size 26: waist 26, hips 35 to 36, XS or S. Size 28: waist 28, hips 37 to 38, S or M. Size 30: waist 30, hips 39 to 40, M or L. Size 32: waist 32, hips 41 to 42, L or XL. Size 34: waist 34, hips 43 to 44, XL or XXL. Size 36: waist 36, hips 45 to 46, XXL or 3XL. Sizes 38 to 44 continue upward through 3XL to 5XL.

Because letter sizes overlap, two brands can call size 30 M and L respectively. Always use the number.

If a brand only lists letter sizes, look for the waist measurement in inches next to each letter. If none is given, check reviews where buyers mention their usual waist size and which letter fitted them.

Hip ranges are a guide, not a rule. A curvy woman with a 28 inch waist may have 40 inch hips, two sizes above the standard range. In that case, choose a curvy fit or size up and tailor the waist.

Teens and very slim women may find even size 24 loose; look for brands with XXS or try junior sizes.

Jeans size 28 in UK and US

UK women's sizes are dress-style sizes. An Indian jeans size 28 roughly corresponds to UK 10 and US 6. Size 26 is around UK 8, US 4. Size 30 is UK 12, US 8. Size 32 is UK 14, US 10. Size 34 is UK 16, US 12. International brands sold in India may use any of these systems.

US denim brands sometimes use waist sizes like Indian brands, and sometimes use 0, 2, 4. Check the chart for each.

Is jeans size 30 M or L?

Size 30 is usually M in some brands and L in others. Check the waist and hip measurement rather than the letter. If the chart says M is 29 to 30 inches and L is 31 to 32, size 30 is M.

For relaxed fits, you can choose the smaller size. For skinny fits, check hips carefully.

As a general rule, Indian brands that use letter sizes tend to run slightly smaller than international brands. If you are an M in an international brand, you might be an L in an Indian brand. Measurements remove the guesswork.

When you are between sizes

For stretch jeans, choose the smaller size because they relax. For rigid jeans, choose the larger size. For skinny jeans, choose based on hips. For wide and relaxed jeans, choose based on waist. If your hips are much bigger than your waist, look for curvy fits.

Remember that tailors can take in waists easily but cannot add fabric to hips.

Some brands also use dual sizing, like 28/30, where the first number is the waist and the second is the inseam. A 28/30 jean has a 28 inch waist and a 30 inch inseam. This is common on international and men's-style jeans and very useful for tall and petite women.

Start by measuring your natural waist and hips with a soft tape. Find your waist number in the chart, then check that your hip measurement falls in or below the range for that size. If your hips are bigger than the range, move up a size or look for a curvy fit. If they are smaller, the jeans may be loose at the seat; consider a straight or slim fit.

For example, if your waist is 29 inches and your hips are 40 inches, a size 30 will likely fit better than a 28, because the 28 hip range is 37 to 38. If your waist is 28 and hips 36, a size 28 in a slim or straight fit should work well, though a relaxed fit may feel roomy.

Then check rise and inseam. A size 30 in a petite or ankle cut has a shorter inseam than the same size in full length.
