Kashmir trip luggage: the quick answer
For a typical five to seven day Kashmir trip covering Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam, the best luggage is a medium 65 to 70 cm polycarbonate spinner for bulky woollens plus a 25 to 30 litre daypack. In summer you can manage with a cabin spinner and a duffle, but winter layers almost always need a check-in case.
Kashmir is a road-trip destination once you land in Srinagar. You will move between a houseboat on Dal Lake, a hotel in Gulmarg and perhaps a resort in Pahalgam, with your bags going in and out of a taxi boot each day. That means your luggage should be tough, weather resistant and not so large that it will not fit in a hatchback or a shikara.

Season decides the size of your bag
Kashmir in April to June is mild, with pleasant days and cool evenings. You need light layers: a few knit tops, a shacket, a light down jacket, jeans and one or two kurtas. A 55 cm cabin spinner plus a 40 litre duffle is plenty for two people sharing.
Autumn, from September to November, brings chinar colours and crisp mornings. Pack a medium suitcase because you will add a warm coat, thermals and boots. In winter, from December to February, Gulmarg is under snow and temperatures drop well below freezing. A single winter coat, snow boots, thermals and woollens can fill half a medium case on their own, so most women choose a 68 to 70 cm spinner, or a large 75 cm case for two people sharing.
Use compression packing cubes for puffer jackets and sweaters. They can roughly halve the volume of bulky knits and let you keep a cabin bag as your second piece rather than a second check-in case.
Materials: what survives snow, slush and rough roads
Hard-shell polycarbonate is the best all-round choice for Kashmir. It resists moisture from snow, protects anything fragile you buy, such as papier-mache boxes or saffron tins, and flexes when handlers throw it into the boot of a car. ABS is cheaper but more prone to cracking in very cold temperatures. Aluminium looks premium but dents easily on mountain roads.
If you prefer soft luggage, choose ballistic nylon with a water-resistant coating rather than leather. Leather can stain from snowmelt and road salt, and drying it properly in a hotel room is tricky. Save your leather weekender for a summer trip.
Check the wheels before you buy. In winter, paths in Gulmarg and Pahalgam can be icy or slushy. Larger, rubberised spinner wheels or a case with sturdy carry handles on two sides helps, because you will often lift your bag rather than roll it.
A women's packing list for Kashmir in winter
Base layers: two sets of thermal tops and leggings. Mid layers: three sweaters or fleece tops, one cardigan and a warm kurta set for evenings. Outer layer: one long padded or wool coat and one waterproof jacket if you will be on the slopes. Bottoms: two pairs of jeans or lined trousers and one pair of waterproof snow pants if you plan to ski or sledge.
Accessories: woollen socks, gloves, a beanie, a pashmina or stole, ear muffs and UV-protected sunglasses, because snow glare at Gulmarg is intense. Footwear: waterproof snow boots with good grip and one pair of comfortable sneakers for Srinagar. Toiletries: a rich moisturiser, lip balm, sunscreen and a hand cream; the cold and dry air is harsh on skin.
Wear your heaviest coat and boots on the flight to save space and weight. You can always take the coat off on the plane and use it as a pillow.
Cabin baggage, check-in limits and connecting flights
Domestic flights to Srinagar typically allow around 15 kg of check-in baggage on economy fares and about 7 kg in the cabin, though many fares now differ, and Srinagar airport has its own security procedures. Some travellers report extra checks on hand baggage at Srinagar, so keep power banks and electronics easy to access, and confirm current rules with your airline before the trip.
If you are connecting through Delhi or flying in from Mumbai or Bengaluru, a direct fare with a single piece of check-in baggage is simpler than juggling two cabin bags. Weigh your packed suitcase at home; winter clothing is heavier than it looks.
Your daypack and handbag for sightseeing
On day trips to Sonamarg, Doodhpathri or the Gondola at Gulmarg, carry a 20 to 30 litre backpack with a spare layer, water, snacks, sunscreen and a power bank, because phone batteries drain fast in the cold. A small sling bag worn under your coat keeps cards and your phone secure during shikara rides and in crowded markets at Lal Chowk.
A structured handbag is useful for evenings in a heritage hotel or a Srinagar restaurant. Choose a darker leather or a coated fabric so snowflakes and drizzle do not leave marks.
Mistakes to avoid when packing for Kashmir
Do not underestimate the weight of woollens. A large suitcase full of sweaters can easily cross 20 kg, triggering excess baggage fees. Do not pack only fashion boots; heels and suede ankle boots are a hazard on icy paths. Do not forget plug adaptors and a small extension cord, since houseboats may have limited sockets.
Avoid soft, light-coloured luggage in winter. Grey slush and mud on mountain roads leaves stains. Black, navy, olive or deep burgundy shells hide wear and still look smart.
Packing for a houseboat, a Gulmarg hotel and a Pahalgam resort
A Dal Lake or Nigeen Lake houseboat is often the most memorable night of a Kashmir trip, but it changes how you pack. Your bags travel by shikara from the ghat to the houseboat, passed hand to hand by the boatmen. A suitcase with sturdy top and side grab handles makes this easier and safer, and a hard shell keeps water splashes off your clothes. Rooms on houseboats are charming but compact, with carved wooden furniture and limited floor space, so a case that opens in a clamshell style needs about a metre of clear floor. If space is tight, a duffle or a top-opening case is more convenient.
In Gulmarg, many hotels sit a short walk from the drop-off point, and in snow season that walk can be slippery. Porters are usually available, but it helps if your bag is not so heavy that one person struggles with it. Pack a separate small pouch with your snow gear, sunglasses and gloves, so you can grab it for the Gondola without opening your main case.
Pahalgam has more resort-style hotels along the Lidder river. If you are spending three nights here as the relaxed end of your trip, keep one dressier outfit, such as a velvet kurta set or a cashmere knit dress, folded at the top of your suitcase in tissue to avoid creases.
A practical system for multi-stop Kashmir itineraries is to pack by stop. Put Srinagar outfits in one cube, Gulmarg winter gear in another and Pahalgam clothes in a third. Keep a laundry bag for worn clothes, and a separate pouch for papier-mache, walnut wood and saffron purchases so they stay protected and easy to declare at airport security if asked.
Shopping is part of every Kashmir itinerary. Pashmina shawls, kahwa, dry fruits, crewel embroidered cushion covers and carpets are popular buys. Shawls are light and fold flat, but dry fruits and saffron add weight quickly. If you know you will shop, travel out with your case two-thirds full, or carry a foldable duffle that can be checked in on the way home. For carpets and large items, many shops in Srinagar offer to ship them to your home city, which is often easier than squeezing them into luggage.
Is luxury luggage worth it for Kashmir?
A premium suitcase earns its price on a trip like Kashmir. Tougher shells, sealed zips, better wheels and solid telescopic handles make a real difference on bumpy roads and in freezing temperatures. Brands such as Samsonite, Delsey and American Tourister typically offer multi-year warranties on hard-shell ranges, and newer labels like Mokobara and Nasher Miles combine good design with useful features like TSA-approved locks and expandable zips.
Choose a colour you love, add a luggage tag with your phone number, and you have a case that will see you through many more trips to the mountains. Explore the luxury travel bags edit to find one that matches your Kashmir plans.
