Kenya safari luggage: why soft bags matter
For a Kenya safari, take a soft duffle without a rigid frame or wheels, because light aircraft flying to camps in the Masai Mara and other reserves typically require soft bags and set low weight limits, often around 15 kg including hand luggage. Confirm the exact limit with your safari operator.
Kenya is increasingly popular with Indian travellers for the Great Migration and wildlife.
Your safari luggage strategy shapes everything else.
A typical Kenya trip runs eight to ten days: a night in Nairobi, three or four nights in the Masai Mara, perhaps two nights in Amboseli with views of Kilimanjaro, and sometimes a few days at the coast. Each leg may involve a light aircraft or a long road transfer, and both reward a compact, soft bag. Getting the luggage right before you leave India saves stress and repacking in Nairobi.

Bush flight limits
The small light aircraft that fly from Nairobi's Wilson Airport to airstrips in the Masai Mara, Amboseli, Samburu and other reserves have tiny cargo compartments. Soft bags without wheels or rigid frames can be squeezed in; hard suitcases often cannot. Operators commonly set a total baggage limit per person, often around 15 kg including hand luggage, although some allow more for a fee. Confirm the exact rule with your safari operator before you pack.
If you are flying into Kenya on an international carrier with a more generous allowance, you may arrive with more luggage than the bush flight allows. Most Nairobi hotels and safari operators will store extra bags while you are on safari, so you can travel to the camp with only a soft duffle and a small daypack.
Even if you are travelling by road in a safari vehicle, soft bags are easier to fit in the back of a Land Cruiser alongside other travellers' luggage.
Weigh your duffle at home with a portable luggage scale, and remember that camera equipment counts towards the limit. Photographers often carry heavy lenses, so pack clothing lighter to compensate, or ask your operator about purchasing an extra seat for luggage.
What to wear on game drives
On game drives, wear neutral, earthy colours such as khaki, olive, beige and soft browns. They blend with the landscape and do not disturb wildlife. Bright colours and white can be distracting, and dark blue and black are often said to attract tsetse flies in some areas. Avoid camouflage prints, which are restricted in some African countries.
Mornings and evenings on the savannah are surprisingly cold, especially in open vehicles, while midday can be hot. Layer a breathable long-sleeve shirt over a tee, and add a fleece and a light windproof jacket for early drives. Long trousers protect against sun and insects.
A wide-brim hat, polarised sunglasses, a lightweight scarf to cover your nose and mouth from dust, and closed sneakers or light hiking shoes complete your game-drive outfit.
Many travellers like to pack one smart-casual outfit for dinners at the lodge, such as a linen dress or a neutral shirt with tailored trousers. Lodge evenings are relaxed, but a fresh outfit makes the sundowner and dinner feel special.
Choose quick-dry fabrics for safari clothing, which rinse easily at camp and dry overnight. Cotton is comfortable but slow to dry, so a mix of cotton and technical fabrics works best. Shirts with roll-up sleeves and button tabs are practical for changing temperatures during the day.
Masai Mara packing list
A practical Masai Mara packing list for five to six nights: three or four neutral shirts or tees, two long-sleeve shirts, two pairs of trousers, one pair of shorts, a fleece, a light jacket, sleepwear, undergarments, a swimsuit if your camp has a pool, one casual dinner outfit, sneakers and sandals.
Add binoculars, a camera with a zoom lens or a phone with a good camera, spare batteries, memory cards, a power bank and a universal adaptor. Camps often have limited charging hours, so a power bank is essential.
Pack sunscreen, insect repellent, a lip balm, any malaria prophylaxis your doctor recommends, a small first-aid kit and a headlamp or torch for walking around the camp at night.
Binoculars are often more useful than a long lens for watching wildlife, so if you have to choose, pack a good compact pair. Your guide will usually carry a pair, but sharing during an exciting sighting is not ideal.
Keep spare memory cards and a small notebook for recording sightings in a separate pouch, so you can note the animals, places and guides that made your safari memorable.
Day bag on drives
On game drives, keep a small backpack or crossbody at your feet with water, sunscreen, your camera, binoculars, a scarf, a light jacket, snacks and a power bank. Vehicles bounce on rough tracks, so secure loose items.
Dust is constant in the dry season, so keep electronics in a zip pouch inside your day bag. A lens cloth and a small dust blower help keep camera equipment clean.
At the camp, a crossbody bag is perfect for dinners and walks to the lounge, keeping your phone and valuables close.
Remember to keep noise low and avoid sudden movements in the vehicle, and never drop food or wrappers. A small zip bag for rubbish inside your day bag keeps the vehicle clean.
Camp life
Many safari camps and lodges offer laundry services, sometimes included in the rate, which means you can pack for three or four days and wash midway. Some camps do not wash underwear for cultural reasons, so pack quick-dry underwear that you can rinse yourself.
Evenings around the campfire can be cool, so a warm layer and cosy sleepwear are welcome. Tents and lodges often provide hot water bottles at night.
Pack a torch or headlamp, as camps are often unfenced and dimly lit at night, and staff may escort you to your tent.
Many camps have limited electricity, often from solar power or a generator, so charge cameras and phones whenever charging is available, and switch devices to airplane mode on game drives to save battery.
A small travel clothesline also helps for drying rinsed clothes outside your tent.
Combining safari with a beach
Many Indian travellers combine a Kenya safari with a beach stay on the Kenyan coast at Diani or Mombasa, or in Zanzibar in Tanzania. Leave your beach clothes, extra shoes and shopping in storage in Nairobi, and pick them up before flying to the coast.
Pack a light beach kit in your safari duffle if you are flying directly from the camp to the coast: two swimsuits, a cover-up, sandals and sunscreen are enough.
Check visa and entry requirements for each country on your itinerary, including any vaccination certificates, such as yellow fever, that may be required.
Shopping for Maasai beadwork, kikoys and carvings is a highlight. Light textiles pack easily, while carvings should be wrapped in clothing. Check Indian customs rules for wooden items and animal-derived products, and never buy items made from wildlife parts.
If you start from Nairobi, a short visit to the Giraffe Centre or the elephant orphanage before your bush flight needs only a day bag, so leave your duffle packed and ready at the hotel.
Choosing a safari duffle
A 60 to 80 litre soft duffle in heavy canvas, waxed canvas or ballistic nylon, with sturdy handles, a shoulder strap and lockable zips, is the ideal safari bag. Leather-trim duffles look elegant in safari photos and age beautifully. Brands such as Samsonite and Hidesign offer duffles in this style, typically from around ₹5,000 for good quality.
Pair your duffle with a small backpack for game drives and a crossbody for camp.
Explore our luxury travel bags for safari-ready duffles that will also serve you on weekend getaways back home.
Look for a duffle with a wide opening, which lets you see everything inside without unpacking, and a separate end compartment for shoes or dirty laundry. These details make living out of a soft bag for a week in a tented camp much easier.
