Kewra attar in a nutshell
Kewra attar is a traditional Indian attar distilled from the fragrant male flowers of the screwpine plant, known as kewra or kewda. It has a sweet, green, honeyed and slightly fruity floral scent that many Indians recognise instantly from biryani, sweets and kewra water used in festive cooking.
Odisha, especially the coastal district of Ganjam, is famous for kewra cultivation, and the flowers are distilled both locally and in perfume towns such as Kannauj. The resulting attar is light, uplifting and well suited to Indian summers.
Because kewra is so tied to food and celebration, wearing it can feel nostalgic and joyful. This guide explains how it is made, how it smells, how it compares with other summer attars and how to wear and buy it with confidence, so you get a bottle that feels fresh rather than syrupy.
Kewra is one of the scents most closely tied to Indian cooking, especially Awadhi and Hyderabadi cuisine, which is why many people find it instantly comforting.

The screwpine plant and its flower
The screwpine, from the Pandanus family, is a shrub-like plant that grows well in coastal regions. Its long, spiky leaves form a distinctive spiral, which is how the plant gets its English name.
The fragrant part is the male flower, a cluster enclosed by creamy, pale bracts. It is intensely scented, and only a small number of blooms appear on each plant during the flowering season, which makes careful harvesting important.
Farmers pick the flowers by hand and send them quickly to distilleries, because the scent fades soon after picking. Freshness is crucial to a good attar, and distillers often work through the night in peak season.
Kewra is also part of ritual and folklore in parts of India, appearing in offerings and in stories around temples, which adds to its emotional significance for many families.
Because the flowers are bulky and fragile, transporting them quickly is a constant challenge in peak season, and growers and distillers often work closely together.
How kewra attar is made
Freshly picked kewra flowers are loaded into copper degs with water and distilled using the deg-bhapka method. The fragrant vapour flows through a bamboo pipe into a receiver holding a base oil, traditionally sandalwood, which absorbs the scent over many hours.
The distillation also produces kewra water, the fragrant hydrosol used in kitchens across India. Kewra water and kewra attar come from the same flowers but serve very different purposes, one for food and one for skin.
Pure kewra oil, sometimes called ruh kewra, is highly concentrated and costly. Most attars sold for wear are kewra distilled into a base, which is softer, more balanced and more affordable.
Quality depends on the freshness of the flowers, the skill of the distiller and the quality of the base oil. A rushed or cheap process gives a thinner, sharper result.
Some distillers also blend kewra with other floral distillates to create compound attars, which can be lovely but should be labelled as blends.
Ask your seller which season the batch was distilled in. Kewra from the most recent flowering season usually has the brightest, freshest top notes, which are the first to fade with age.
What kewra smells like
Kewra opens sweet and green, with a honeyed, slightly fruity character that some compare to ripe pear or melon. The heart is creamy and floral with a fresh, almost watery quality that feels surprisingly cool.
Over time, the sandalwood base adds warmth and smoothness, and the scent settles into a soft, sweet, comforting skin fragrance that lasts several hours.
Kewra is lighter and fresher than heavy white florals like tuberose, yet sweeter and more floral than khus. It sits in a pleasant middle ground that suits both daytime and early evening.
If you enjoy fragrances with honeyed florals, green notes or a gentle fruitiness, kewra is worth trying. If you dislike anything sweet, start with a very small amount.
Some noses also pick up a faint resemblance to rose or hyacinth in good kewra, which explains why it blends so naturally with other florals.
Wearing kewra in Indian weather
Kewra is a summer and monsoon favourite. Its fresh sweetness feels cheerful on hot mornings and it holds up well in humidity without turning heavy, provided you use a light hand.
It works beautifully for daytime events like haldi and mehndi ceremonies, family lunches, temple visits and Eid mornings. It also suits office wear when applied sparingly to the wrists.
In winter, kewra can feel a little thin on its own. Layer it over sandalwood or a soft amber oil for extra warmth and depth during the cold months.
As with all attars, apply to moisturised pulse points, avoid rubbing and let it unfold. One or two small dabs are usually plenty for a full morning.
In very humid weather, try a single dab behind each ear rather than on the wrists, which keeps the sweetness subtle and pleasant.
Layering ideas with kewra
Kewra pairs naturally with rose for a classic festive floral. With jasmine or mogra, it becomes a lush bouquet suited to weddings and celebrations.
For a fresher take, layer kewra over khus. The cool earthiness of vetiver balances kewra's sweetness and makes it feel even more summery.
With sandalwood, kewra becomes creamy and soft, ideal for daily wear. A dab of kewra under a fruity floral perfume spray can also add natural depth and a distinctly Indian twist.
Keep layering simple and test combinations at home first. Two components are enough to create something lovely and personal.
If kewra on its own feels too sweet for you, a touch of mitti beneath it gives an earthy grounding that many people find more balanced and wearable through the day.
How to buy good kewra attar
Buy from established attar houses or reputable sellers who describe the product clearly. Ask whether it is pure ruh kewra or kewra in a base oil, and what that base is.
Real kewra smells fresh, natural and smoothly sweet. Overly sugary, sharp or soapy versions may be synthetic imitations or heavily diluted.
Do not confuse kewra water, which is used in food, with kewra attar for skin. Food-grade kewra water is not a perfume, and perfume oils should never be used in cooking.
Start with a sample or small bottle, check reviews and confirm return policies, which typically vary by seller, before buying a larger quantity.
If your kewra attar starts to smell flat or sour, it has likely been exposed to heat or air for too long and should be replaced.
Storage and care
Store kewra attar in a cool, dark place in a tightly sealed glass bottle. Heat, light and air can dull the fresh top notes, which are the most delicate part of the scent.
Avoid storing it in the bathroom or near a sunny window. A drawer, cupboard or wooden box is ideal for most Indian homes.
Use a clean dipstick or apply via fingertip, and keep the cap closed between uses to limit oxidation. Wipe the neck of the bottle occasionally.
Well-stored kewra can last for a long time, though its brightest notes are at their best when the attar is relatively fresh.
Kewra also makes a cheerful gift during Eid, Diwali or a summer housewarming, particularly for someone who loves Indian food and festive traditions. Its familiarity makes it easy for first-time attar wearers to enjoy, and its freshness suits almost every age group.
Why kewra deserves a place in your collection
Kewra is one of the most distinctly Indian floral scents, connected to coastal farms, festive kitchens and temple traditions. It offers a fresh, cheerful alternative to heavy perfumes in hot weather.
It is versatile enough for daily wear yet special enough for celebrations, and it layers beautifully with other attars and sprays.
For anyone exploring Indian perfumery, a small bottle of kewra is an easy, joyful addition that shows how deeply fragrance runs through Indian life.
Pair it with a summer cotton saree or a light kurta and you have a whole sensory memory waiting to be made.
