The best luggage for a Ladakh trip, in one paragraph
For a Ladakh trip, the best luggage is a soft, water-resistant 60 to 80 litre duffle with backpack straps, plus a 20 to 25 litre daypack. Ladakh involves long drives over high passes, rooftop carriers on SUVs and stays in camps and guesthouses, so a flexible soft bag is easier to load and lighter than a large hard-shell suitcase.
If you are flying into Leh and staying in one comfortable hotel with day trips, a medium spinner is fine. But if your itinerary includes Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri or a self-drive circuit via Manali or Srinagar, soft luggage wins.

Why duffles beat suitcases in Ladakh
On a Ladakh road trip, your luggage usually goes on the roof of a Scorpio, Innova or tempo traveller, strapped under a tarpaulin. Hard cases slide, crack against each other and get scuffed by rope. A soft duffle squashes into gaps, sits flat on the roof rack and can be lashed down securely. In the boot, two duffles fit where one large suitcase would.
Duffles also suit camps. In Nubra or at Pangong, Swiss tents have limited floor space and uneven ground. You can push a duffle into a corner or under a bed, and it will not tip over. Look for one with a U-shaped opening, so you can see everything inside without unpacking, and backpack straps for the short walk from a parking spot to your tent.
Materials and features that matter at altitude
Choose a duffle in ballistic nylon, ripstop nylon or TPU-coated fabric. These shrug off dust, light rain and snow at Chang La or Khardung La, and you can wipe them clean at the end of each day. Leather is beautiful but impractical here; fine dust gets into the grain and it dries out in the very dry, high-UV air.
Useful features include compression straps to cinch a half-empty bag, a separate shoe compartment, lockable zips and reinforced haul handles on both ends. A removable shoulder strap is helpful at the airport. Some premium brands offer lifetime or multi-year warranties on expedition-style duffles, but always read the terms carefully.
If you do take a hard-shell suitcase, stick to polycarbonate, choose a dark colour, and use a protective cover to limit scuffs from roof racks.
Flights to Leh and baggage allowances
Leh airport is one of the highest commercial airports in the world, and flights in and out are sometimes affected by weather and weight restrictions. Domestic carriers typically allow around 15 kg of check-in baggage and 7 kg in the cabin on economy fares, though allowances vary by airline and fare class. Confirm the current limits with your airline, and do not assume you can pay for extra weight at the last minute on a busy summer flight.
Travellers flying from Delhi often keep one duffle and one daypack, wearing the heaviest jacket and boots on board. Pack medicines, a spare layer and essentials in your cabin bag in case your checked bag is delayed.
The Ladakh packing list for women
Ladakh can be warm in the afternoon sun and freezing at night, even in July. Layering is the key.
Base layers: two sets of thermals. Tops: three full-sleeve tees, one fleece and one light down jacket. Outer layer: a windproof and water-resistant shell. Bottoms: two pairs of trekking trousers and one pair of jeans. Footwear: comfortable trekking shoes or high-ankle sneakers with good grip, plus flip-flops for camps.
Accessories: a sun hat, a buff or scarf to cover your face from dust, UV-protected sunglasses, gloves and a beanie. Toiletries: SPF 50 sunscreen, lip balm with SPF, a rich moisturiser, wet wipes, hand sanitiser and a small medical kit including any altitude medicine prescribed by your doctor.
Use packing cubes in different colours for each day of a circuit, so you only open one cube at each overnight stop instead of emptying the entire duffle.
Your daypack: the bag that goes up the passes
At Khardung La or Chang La, you will step out of the car into thin, cold air. Your daypack should hold a warm layer, water, dry fruit, a power bank, sunscreen, tissues and your camera. A 20 to 25 litre pack with a hip belt is ideal; avoid tote bags here, since you need both hands free on steep steps at monasteries such as Thiksey and Hemis.
A slim sling bag worn across the body keeps your phone and permits handy at checkposts, where you may need to show inner line permit documents.
Common mistakes on Ladakh trips
The most frequent mistake is overpacking. Many travellers carry a large suitcase full of outfits for photos, then struggle to lift it into a vehicle at 3,500 metres, where even light exertion is tiring. Pack less and rewear layers.
Other mistakes include choosing light-coloured luggage that shows dust, forgetting a rain cover for the daypack, bringing only cotton clothes that stay cold and damp, and keeping all medicines in checked baggage. Store a small medical kit and any prescription medicines in your daypack.
A quieter mistake is ignoring the first two days. Doctors and tour operators commonly advise resting on arrival in Leh to acclimatise, so do not plan to haul bags up and down guesthouse stairs on day one. Ask for a ground-floor room or porter help, and keep your heaviest bag light enough that you are never tempted to lift it alone while your body adjusts to the altitude.
Packing by route: Leh base, Nubra, Pangong and the Manali highway
Most Ladakh itineraries start with two or three days in Leh to acclimatise. Unpack fully here, because you will be resting, visiting Shanti Stupa and the palace, and walking around the market. Then pack a smaller overnight kit for the circuit. Many hotels in Leh will store a bag for you while you head to Nubra and Pangong for two or three nights, which means you can leave your heavier suitcase behind and take only a 40 to 50 litre duffle on the roof rack.
For Nubra Valley, via Khardung La, pack for desert days and cold nights. A light cotton shirt for the sand dunes at Hunder, a fleece for the evening and a warm jacket for the pass are enough. At Pangong Tso, nights are much colder, even in summer, so keep a down jacket, thermals and a beanie on top of your bag rather than buried under other clothes.
If you are driving from Manali to Leh, or from Srinagar via Kargil, the journey takes two days or more, with stops at places like Jispa or Sarchu. On these long drives, the roof rack is often only opened at the overnight stop. Keep a small overnight pouch with toiletries, a change of clothes, medicines and a charger inside the car, so you never have to untie the roof load at a roadside dhaba.
For bikers, the rules are different again. On a motorbike tour, your luggage typically travels in a backup vehicle or in saddlebags. Saddlebags have limited capacity, so riders usually carry 30 to 40 litres in total, with a separate waterproof roll-top bag for riding gear. If a backup vehicle is included, a soft duffle is still the best choice for the same reasons as on a car trip.
A few small extras make every stop easier: a set of carabiners to clip water bottles and caps to your daypack, a microfibre towel, a head torch for camps with limited power, and zip-lock bags to keep fine dust away from your camera and phone.
Is a premium duffle worth it for Ladakh?
Yes, if you travel to the mountains more than once. A well-made duffle costing ₹5,000 or more typically has tougher fabric, stronger stitching, better zips and comfortable straps. It will survive Ladakh's dust and roof-rack life far better than a cheap bag. It doubles as a gym bag, a weekend bag for Lonavala, and a carry-all for the next road trip to Spiti or Sikkim.
Browse the luxury travel bags edit for duffles and backpacks that combine durability with good looks, then build your Ladakh packing plan around them. Pick a bold colour so it is easy to spot on a crowded roof rack.
