Layering for flights: the three-layer rule
The best approach to layering for flights is a simple three-layer system: a breathable base layer that is comfortable on its own in a hot terminal, a mid layer such as a cardigan or fine knit that you can pull on when the cabin cools, and an outer layer or large scarf that works as a blanket or arrival jacket. Each layer should come off without lifting your arms over your head in a cramped seat, and each should match the others so any combination looks deliberate.
Flights are a series of microclimates. You might queue in a humid 34 degree Chennai morning, sit in an air-conditioned terminal, board a cabin that feels warm while parked, then shiver at cruising altitude. Layering lets you respond to each stage without carrying a suitcase of options.

Layer one: the base that works on its own
Your base layer must be comfortable and presentable by itself, because in Indian airports you may spend an hour in heat before boarding. Choose a modal, Tencel or cotton-modal tee, a fine merino long-sleeve for winter routes, or a soft camisole under a shirt.
Fit should be close but not tight, so mid layers glide over it without bunching. Avoid bulky seams, big prints that clash with a cardigan, and anything you would not want to be seen in if the mid layer comes off.
For bottoms, the base is your trousers, joggers or skirt. Wide-leg knit trousers are ideal because they let warm air circulate in summer and trap warmth with thin socks in winter. In very cold destinations, add a thin thermal legging underneath.
Ethnic base layers work too: a cotton kurta with straight pants is breathable and modest, with the dupatta acting as a natural extra layer.
If you tend to feel the cold, choose a base with long sleeves and thumbholes, which keeps wrists warm without adding bulk. If you run warm, a sleeveless shell under a cardigan gives you the most flexibility, but make sure the shell is something you would happily wear in the boarding queue.
Layer two: the mid layer for the cold cabin
The mid layer is the workhorse of flight layering. A front-opening cardigan, a zip knit or a lightweight button shirt can be put on and taken off while seated. Pullover sweaters are warm but awkward in a narrow seat and can disturb your hair and make-up.
Choose fine-gauge knits in merino, cashmere blends, cotton or viscose. They are warm for their weight, fold small and do not add bulk under a coat. A longline cardigan doubles as a dress-like cover over leggings for long-haul comfort.
Colour-match the mid layer to the base. An oatmeal cardigan over a cream tee, or a navy zip knit over a white top, looks intentional whether worn open or closed.
Layer three: outerwear and the essential scarf
The outer layer depends on your route. For domestic flights within India, a denim jacket, unstructured blazer or shacket is enough. For winter flights to Europe, the UK, North America, Japan or Kashmir, wear your heaviest coat rather than packing it; it saves suitcase space and you will need it at arrival.
A large scarf or stole, around 70 by 200 cm, is the most valuable layer of all. It works as a blanket, shoulder wrap, pillow cover, modesty layer and even an eye shade. Wool and cashmere blends suit winter, cotton or modal suit summer.
Packable puffers and quilted liner jackets are excellent for travellers on mixed-climate trips. They compress into a small pouch inside your tote and expand when you land in Delhi fog or Zurich snow.
Where to stow each layer during the journey
Layering only works if your layers are within reach. Before boarding, wear the outer layer over your arm or on your body, and keep the scarf in the top of your tote. Once seated, place the coat in the overhead bin on top of your cabin trolley, and keep the mid layer and scarf with you.
A tote with a wide opening and a zip top makes it easy to pull out a cardigan without unpacking. Many structured totes from brands like Lavie, Caprese, Hidesign and Da Milano have trolley sleeves, so the tote rides on your cabin case and the coat can be draped over both through the terminal.
If you use a hard-shell cabin spinner, pack an extra layer in the top compartment for long journeys, along with socks and a fresh top, so you can reach them quickly at a transit stop.

Layering formulas for common Indian routes
Mumbai to Delhi in December: cotton tee, merino cardigan, wool-blend coat on arrival, cashmere-blend scarf, loafers with socks. Delhi fog can mean long delays, so keep the coat accessible at the gate.
Bengaluru to Goa in summer: modal camisole, open linen-blend shirt as the mid layer, cotton stole for the cabin. No outer layer needed.
Delhi to London in winter: merino long-sleeve, zip cardigan, long wool coat, scarf, gloves in your tote, ankle boots or knit sneakers with socks.
Mumbai to Singapore or Bali: breathable tee, light cardigan for the chilled cabin and air-conditioned arrival halls, and a scarf. Singapore's indoor air conditioning is famously strong, so the cardigan earns its place beyond the flight.
Fabrics that layer well and those that do not
Layering fabrics should slide over each other easily. Smooth knits, jersey and lightweight wovens work well together. Textured or bulky fabrics, like chunky cable knits over a thick sweatshirt, create bulk and heat.
Natural fibres like merino, cotton and silk breathe, which prevents the sweaty-then-cold cycle common with synthetic layers. Polyester fleece is warm but can feel clammy once you are in a heated terminal.
Avoid layering pieces with conflicting lengths, such as a long cardigan over a longer shirt, which looks messy. Ideally each layer is slightly longer than the one beneath it, or all layers finish at the same point.
Mixed-climate trips are where layering really proves itself. A December itinerary from Mumbai to Dubai to Paris, for example, takes you from 30 degrees to 25 and then to near freezing within a day. Rather than packing three outfits in your cabin bag, wear the same base and mid layer throughout and add the coat, gloves and scarf for the final leg. During a transit in Dubai or Doha, the lightweight cardigan is all you need inside the terminal, while the coat rides on top of your trolley. Arriving in a cold city at night, you simply button up and walk out, rather than unzipping a suitcase in the arrivals hall to dig out winter clothes.
Matching your layers to your luggage
Your layers are what people see most as you walk through the terminal with your trolley, so coordinate them with your luggage colour. A camel coat or cardigan works with tan, cognac and cream cases. A navy blazer pairs with navy, white or grey luggage. Black and charcoal layers look sleek with black or graphite spinners.
Neutral layers make it easy to mix outfits across a trip. A single camel cardigan can work with a white tee on the flight, a printed dress at your destination and jeans for sightseeing.
When packing for the return, keep the same layering system in mind: the destination's climate and India's will likely differ, and you will want the right layer on top of your cabin bag.
Heavy outer layers also help with weight limits. A wool coat can weigh more than a kilogram, which is a meaningful share of a typical 7 kg domestic cabin allowance. Wearing it rather than packing it frees up space and weight for shoes, toiletries or a laptop.
Layering mistakes to avoid
The most common mistake is relying on a single thick sweater, which leaves you either too hot or too cold. Thin layers are more versatile. Another is packing your warm layer in checked luggage, leaving you freezing in the cabin or on arrival.
Some travellers over-layer, wearing four or five pieces that become a struggle in security trays. Three layers plus a scarf is enough for almost any flight. Finally, avoid layers that need to come over your head mid-flight; zips and buttons are far more practical in a narrow economy seat.
