London trip luggage: what works best
For a London trip, the best luggage is a medium 60 to 68 cm spinner plus a cabin-size backpack or tote, because you will almost certainly use the Tube, and many stations have long staircases and narrow ticket gates. Pack layers and a waterproof jacket rather than one heavy coat; London weather can do four seasons in a day.
Indian travellers visit London for holidays, family visits, university drop-offs and work, and most fly long-haul on carriers such as Air India, British Airways or Virgin Atlantic. Checked allowances on these routes are typically generous in economy, but generous allowances lead to oversized suitcases that become painful on the Underground.
If you are flying in to visit children at university or relatives in Wembley, Southall or Harrow, plan a separate bag for gifts. A soft duffle that folds flat for the return is ideal: fill it with sweets and clothes for family on the way out, then fold it into your suitcase for the journey home, or refill it with things your children want to send back.

Navigating the Tube and trains with luggage
Many central London Tube stations have escalators, but a surprising number involve stairs, long corridors and crowded platforms during rush hour. Step-free access exists at several stations; check the transport authority's maps before you travel. Avoid travelling with large bags between about 8 and 9.30 am or 5 and 7 pm.
If you are arriving at Heathrow with two large suitcases, a pre-booked cab or the Elizabeth line with step-free stations is easier than the Piccadilly line. For day trips to Oxford, Bath or the Cotswolds by train, leave your main suitcase at the hotel and take only a day bag. A medium spinner with a firm side handle makes those occasional stair moments far easier.
Black cabs and app-based cabs handle large luggage easily, but they are expensive for long distances. For a family of four with four medium bags, a pre-booked minivan from Heathrow is often comparable to individual train tickets and far less tiring after a long flight.
Choosing the right suitcase for the UK
London hotel rooms, particularly in Kensington, Paddington or Covent Garden, can be small. A 65 cm polycarbonate spinner fits in most wardrobes or under the luggage rack. If you are visiting family for a month, a 75 cm large suitcase makes sense, but you will rarely move it once you arrive.
Hard-shell bags protect gifts such as sweets, pickles and sarees you may be carrying for relatives. Soft expandable cases suit shoppers planning on Oxford Street, Harrods or Bicester Village, since an extra few centimetres of expansion often absorb a couple of coats on the return. Compare hard and soft options in our luxury travel bags collection.
Weight matters more than volume for UK family visits, because Indian travellers tend to fill bags with dense items such as dry fruit, books and steel utensils. A lighter shell leaves more of your allowance for contents. Weigh each bag at home with a handheld luggage scale and aim to stay a kilo under the limit to allow for airport scale variation.
If your trip combines London with Scotland or Paris, keep the medium size anyway, since trains to Edinburgh and the Eurostar both reward bags you can lift onto racks yourself.
What to pack for London weather
London is mild but damp. Spring and autumn days sit between roughly 8 and 18 degrees, summers can be warm, and winters are grey and cold rather than snowy. A water-resistant trench coat is the single most useful item you can pack. Under it, layer a fine-knit jumper, a shirt or tee, and well-fitting trousers or dark jeans.
Pack a compact umbrella, although many Londoners prefer a hooded jacket because wind breaks umbrellas easily. Footwear should be water-resistant: leather ankle boots, cushioned sneakers and a pair of polished loafers cover theatre nights, museum days and walks along the South Bank. A tailored blazer instantly dresses up jeans for dinner in Mayfair or Soho.
In summer, London can have heatwaves, and many older buildings and some Tube lines lack air conditioning. Pack breathable cotton dresses and a pair of sandals along with your layers. In winter, add thermals, a wool coat, gloves and a beanie; darkness falls around four in the afternoon in December, and the damp cold feels sharper than the thermometer suggests.
Your cabin bag for the long-haul flight
Flights from Mumbai or Delhi to London run around nine to ten hours. Your cabin bag, typically limited to around 7 kg in economy on many airlines but always check your fare, should hold a change of clothes, a warm layer, compression socks, medicines, a toothbrush, lip balm, chargers and your documents including your UK visa and any university or invitation letters.
A structured backpack with a laptop sleeve keeps documents and electronics organised, while a leather tote with a luggage sleeve looks polished for arrivals. Keep a small pouch for liquids under 100 ml so security in transit airports is quick. A light scarf or stole doubles as a blanket on the flight and an accessory later.
Long-haul flights are dehydrating. A small cabin pouch with a hydrating mist, moisturiser, lip balm and eye drops, all under 100 ml, makes a real difference on arrival. Compression socks reduce swelling on the overnight flight, and a pair of soft socks keeps feet warm when the cabin gets cold.
Packing gifts and food for family in the UK
Many Indian travellers to London carry sweets, namkeen, spices and festive clothes for relatives. The UK has rules on bringing meat, dairy and some plant products; check the official government guidance before packing. Sealed, commercially packaged dry snacks and spices are generally less of a concern, but declare anything you are unsure about.
Pack food in zip-lock bags inside a sturdy box in the centre of a hard-shell suitcase, surrounded by clothes. Strong-smelling pickles should be double-bagged. Wrap sarees and lehengas in muslin or garment bags and lay them flat at the top so they arrive without crush marks for that family function.
Gold jewellery for a family wedding in the UK should travel in your cabin bag and be declared if required. Keep a list of what you are carrying with approximate values. Festive wear can be heavy; a lehenga with can-can easily weighs three to four kilos, so account for it when planning your checked allowance.
Day bags and security in London
London is generally safe, but pickpockets operate on busy Tube lines, Oxford Street, Camden Market and around Westminster. A crossbody sling or a zip-top tote is better than an open shopper. Contactless payments are widely accepted, so you need to carry very little cash.
For theatre evenings in the West End, a slim clutch or a small sling with your phone, card and lipstick is all you need. Museum entry is often free at major institutions, but bag checks are routine, so a smaller bag means a faster entry line at the British Museum or the V&A.
Markets such as Borough, Portobello Road and Camden are crowded on weekends, and you will want your hands free for food and browsing. A compact crossbody with a front zip pocket for your phone keeps everything accessible without opening the main compartment repeatedly.
Investing in luggage for repeat UK trips
If London is a recurring trip, for example to visit children studying there, buy one durable medium spinner and one reliable cabin bag rather than replacing budget bags every year. Brands like Samsonite, Tumi, Mokobara and American Tourister offer warranties and wheel replacements that matter when you fly long-haul often. Expect to spend from about ₹7,000 for good mid-range spinners to well above ₹30,000 for premium lines.
Look for TSA-approved locks, recessed wheels, a smooth multi-stage handle and a shell finish that hides scratches, such as textured or matte polycarbonate. Browse our curated luxury travel bags to find a set that suits UK trips and family visits for years.
When choosing colours, remember that London and Heathrow see heavy luggage volumes; a distinctive colour or a bright strap makes your case easy to spot. Hard shells in matte finishes hide the scratches that inevitably appear after a few long-haul trips through busy hubs.
