The ideal long-haul flight outfit for women
The ideal long-haul flight outfit for women is a soft, breathable base in merino or modal, loose-fitting bottoms with a stretch waist, compression socks, a warm mid layer you can remove, and slip-on shoes half a size roomier than usual. Add a large scarf as a blanket and you can sleep comfortably on a ten to sixteen hour flight from Delhi or Mumbai to London, New York or Sydney, then walk off looking presentable.
Long-haul dressing is more about physiology than fashion. Feet swell, cabin air is dry, temperatures fluctuate and you will try to sleep upright. Clothes that seem fine for a two-hour domestic hop become miserable by hour nine. This guide builds an outfit that handles all of that and still looks good at immigration.

Base layers: what to wear next to skin
Your base layer touches skin for the entire journey, so prioritise breathability and odour resistance. A fine merino tee or long-sleeve top is the gold standard: it regulates temperature as cabin conditions swing and stays fresher than cotton after many hours. Modal and Tencel tees are excellent alternatives for warmer climates and feel silky against skin.
Choose a soft, wire-free bra or bralette. Underwires dig in when you sleep slumped in a seat. For bottoms, wide-leg knit trousers, relaxed joggers in a dense jersey, or a soft jumpsuit with a front zip all work. Avoid rigid jeans and tight waistbands, because the body naturally bloats at altitude and anything snug becomes painful.
Wear compression socks or stockings under your trousers. Many travellers find they reduce leg swelling on long flights; if you have any circulation concerns, ask your doctor which grade suits you.
Layering for a cabin that swings between warm and cold
Long-haul cabins are often warm during boarding and meal service, then cool down when lights dim. Build three layers you can add or remove without standing up. Over your base, wear a lightweight cardigan or zip knit; over that, carry a packable down vest or a soft wool coat that doubles as a blanket.
A large scarf or stole of around 70 by 200 cm is the most useful long-haul accessory. It works as a shawl, blanket, pillow cover, eye shade and modesty layer when you land in a conservative destination. Choose wool or cashmere blends for winter routes and cotton or modal for summer.
If you are flying from India in May to Europe, remember you may board in 40 degree heat and land in 12 degrees. Wear the warm layer rather than packing it in checked luggage, so you are not shivering in the arrivals hall.
Gloves and a thin beanie take almost no space in a tote and make a winter arrival at Heathrow, Frankfurt or Toronto far more pleasant, particularly if you queue outdoors for a taxi or wait on a cold train platform. For the return to India, reverse the logic: keep a cotton tee and sandals near the top of your cabin bag so you can strip down quickly after landing in Delhi or Chennai heat.
Shoes for long flights and swollen feet
Feet can swell noticeably on long flights, which is why your best shoes for a long-haul trip are soft, slip-on and a little roomy. Knit sneakers, slip-on canvas sneakers and soft leather loafers with a cushioned insole are all good choices. Avoid narrow pointed flats, heeled boots and anything brand new.
Pack a pair of thin socks or foldable slippers in your personal item so you can slip shoes off during the flight. Before landing, put your shoes back on early, because swollen feet take a few minutes to squeeze in.
If your itinerary includes a long transit at Dubai, Doha or Singapore, choose shoes that can handle a lot of walking, since gates at large hubs can be far apart.
The long-haul cabin bag kit
For long-haul flights you typically get a cabin bag plus a personal item, though allowances on carriers such as Air India, Emirates and Singapore Airlines vary by fare class, so confirm before you fly. A 55 cm hard-shell spinner from brands like Samsonite, Delsey, Tumi or Mokobara holds a change of clothes and valuables, while a structured tote or backpack under the seat keeps flight essentials close.
In the under-seat bag, pack: passport and documents in a slim organiser, a fresh top and underwear, toothbrush and mini toothpaste, moisturiser, lip balm, facial mist under 100 ml, eye mask, earplugs, neck pillow, phone charger with adapter, a refillable water bottle, medication, and a pen for arrival forms.
In the trolley, keep one complete outfit for arrival in case checked luggage is delayed, plus jewellery, electronics and anything valuable. A lightweight TSA lock is useful if you are travelling to or through the United States.
Looking presentable at arrival
An hour before landing, change your top in the lavatory, brush your teeth, splash your face and apply moisturiser and a tinted balm. Swap the eye mask for sunglasses and twist your hair into a sleek bun. These small steps transform how you look at immigration and in photographs at the hotel.
If you are going directly to a meeting or a family function, pack a crease-resistant blouse or a printed top in a zip pouch. A soft blazer rolled, not folded, in your trolley will look sharp after a quick shake.
Keep a small leather card holder and your hotel booking in the front pocket of your tote, so you are not unpacking everything at the taxi queue.
Three long-haul outfit combinations
India to Europe in winter: charcoal merino top, black wide knit trousers, compression socks, grey knit sneakers, camel wool coat, cashmere-blend scarf, black spinner and black leather tote.
India to the US in summer: white modal long-sleeve tee, navy jersey wide-leg trousers, navy zip cardigan, white slip-on sneakers, navy hard-shell trolley and a tan tote. Add a light denim jacket for over-air-conditioned airports.
India to Australia or Bali for a honeymoon: sage jumpsuit with a front zip, cream long cardigan, cotton stole, white sneakers, and a pastel or champagne cabin trolley for photographs on arrival. Pack a fresh sundress in your personal item so you can change after landing.
Sleeping well in economy, premium economy and business
Your seat changes what you should wear. In economy, where you will sleep upright, everything should be soft at the waist, neck and wrists. Hoods are useful because they block light and keep your neck warm, but choose a slim knit hood rather than a bulky sweatshirt. A front-zip cardigan lets you open up when the cabin warms without lifting anything over your head in a tight space.
In premium economy you get a little more recline and legroom, so a jumpsuit becomes more practical, and you can stretch your legs enough to keep compression socks comfortable. In business class on carriers such as Emirates, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines and Air India, amenity kits and pyjamas are often provided on long sectors, though offerings vary. Many women still prefer their own sleep layer, such as a matching modal top and trouser, which also works as a smart arrival outfit.
Whatever the cabin, think about the order of layers. Before boarding, wear the warmest layer and keep the scarf on top of your tote. After take-off, remove shoes and put on socks, wrap the scarf, and stow the coat overhead. Two hours before landing, reverse the process so you are dressed, refreshed and ready before the meal trays come round.
Keep your eye mask, earplugs, lip balm and hand cream in a small zip pouch inside the seat pocket, not in the overhead bin. Reaching for them in the dark without waking a neighbour makes a real difference on a sixteen-hour flight to the US west coast.
Long-haul outfit mistakes that ruin the journey
Skipping layers is the biggest mistake on any international flight outfit, followed closely by wearing tight jeans or a belt. Heavy perfume is another, as neighbours will be breathing it for twelve hours. Contact lenses can feel dry in cabin air, so carry glasses for the flight.
Many travellers also forget that the journey is not only the flight. There may be a long transit, a train from the airport, or a wait for hotel check-in. Your outfit needs to work for 20 hours, not just the time in the seat.
Finally, travelling with mismatched, battered luggage undercuts even the best outfit. A well-chosen neutral cabin trolley and a structured tote make the whole long-haul experience calmer and more organised.
