Long layover packing: what you actually need
For a long layover, pack a cabin bag that lets you freshen up, change, charge and rest without opening your checked luggage: a toiletry kit within liquid limits, a full change of clothes, chargers and a power bank, medicines, a light layer, and your documents in an easy-reach pocket. If your bags are checked through, you will not see them until your final destination, so plan as though the cabin bag is your whole wardrobe for the transit.
Layovers of six to fourteen hours are common on journeys from India to Europe, North America and Australia through hubs such as Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi, Singapore and Frankfurt. With the right bag, a long layover can feel like a short break rather than an endurance test.
This guide covers what to pack, how to organise it, transit rules to keep in mind, and the best bag setup.
The key principle is simple: your checked bag is out of reach until the end of the journey, so everything you need for the next twenty-four hours, plus a margin for delays, must live in your cabin bag and personal item.

Check whether your bags are checked through
When you check in, ask whether your bags are tagged to the final destination. On a single ticket, they usually are. On separate tickets, you may need to collect bags, clear immigration and re-check, which can require a transit visa depending on your passport and the country.
Look at the bag tag: it should show the final airport code. If it shows the transit airport instead, ask why before leaving the counter.
If you must collect bags, plan for the time and possibly a luggage storage facility at the hub if you want to explore the city.
Keep a printed copy of your onward booking in your tote. Transit staff sometimes ask for proof of the next flight, and a dead phone battery is not a good reason to be delayed.
If your layover is overnight and the airline offers a hotel, ask whether bags will remain checked through. Usually they do, which means your cabin bag must cover the hotel stay as well, including nightwear and a fresh outfit for the morning.
The freshen-up kit
Your toiletry kit should include a toothbrush and travel toothpaste, face wash, moisturiser, sunscreen, deodorant, lip balm, a hairbrush, hair ties, dry shampoo within limits, facial wipes and a small perfume. Keep liquids in containers of 100 ml or less in a clear pouch, since transit security usually rescreens hand luggage.
Many hubs have shower facilities in lounges or pay-per-use spas. A quick shower after a ten-hour flight is transformative. Pack a microfibre towel if you are not sure towels are provided.
A hanging toiletry case is ideal for lounge showers because it keeps your products off wet counters.
Do not forget small comforts: a few cotton pads, a mini hand cream, a travel hairbrush and a scrunchie. They take up almost no space and make you feel human after a long flight in dry cabin air.
A full outfit change
Pack a complete change: lingerie, socks, a top and comfortable bottoms. A crease-resistant co-ord set or a jersey dress is perfect, because it looks polished even after hours in a bag. Add a light jacket or cardigan for chilly airport air conditioning.
If you arrive at your destination for a meeting or a family event, your second outfit should be ready-to-wear. Roll it in a packing cube so it stays neat.
Comfortable footwear matters for long walks between gates. Sneakers or soft loafers are better than heels, and compression socks can help on long flights.
Pack your change of clothes in a compression cube so it takes up minimal space. A lightweight linen shirt and stretch trousers roll small and come out looking fresh, which is exactly what you want before a second long flight or an arrival meeting.
Keep a separate small pouch for used clothes. A washable laundry pouch keeps worn items away from fresh ones, and it is easy to drop into your checked bag at your final destination.
Tech and charging
Carry a power bank, cables, a universal travel adapter and noise-cancelling earphones. Charge everything during the first flight if seat power is available, and top up in the lounge or at charging stations.
Download entertainment, maps of the transit airport and any boarding passes before you leave India. Airport Wi-Fi can be slow or limited.
Keep the tech pouch near the top of your cabin bag so you can lift it out for rescreening in transit.
A universal adapter matters more than people think. Hubs in the Gulf, Europe and Southeast Asia use different socket types, and lounge sockets are not always universal. A compact adapter with USB-C ports is a small investment that keeps every device charged.
Rest and comfort
Long layovers often include a night or early-morning stretch. Pack an eye mask, earplugs, a travel pillow and a soft shawl. Some hubs have quiet zones, sleep pods or transit hotels; booking in advance is often wise.
Hydration and light snacks help. Carry an empty water bottle to fill after security and some dry snacks like nuts or protein bars, keeping in mind the import rules at your final destination.
Lip balm, hand cream and a face mist within liquid limits make a dry airport environment more bearable.
If you plan to sleep in the terminal, choose a quiet gate area away from announcements and keep your bags close. Loop the tote strap around your arm or the trolley handle as a simple security habit.
The best bag setup for layovers
A cabin trolley around 55 cm plus a structured tote is the best combination for most women. The trolley holds clothes and toiletries; the tote holds documents, tech, medicines and snacks. Slide the tote over the trolley handle using a trolley sleeve to keep hands free during long walks.
Look for a trolley with smooth spinner wheels, a front pocket and a light empty weight. Premium brands typically offer quieter wheels and more comfortable handles, which you appreciate in a large hub with long corridors.
If you prefer soft luggage, a cabin-sized weekender with a trolley sleeve and a shoulder strap works well, especially when you need to climb stairs or board a shuttle.
A lightweight trolley also helps when you have to carry it up a jet bridge staircase or onto an airport train. Many hubs have long distances between terminals, and the lighter your setup, the more you can enjoy the layover.
Transit rules to remember
Liquids bought in duty-free before your first flight may be confiscated at transit security unless they are sealed in tamper-evident bags and meet the hub's rules. Buy perfumes and alcohol at your final destination or at the transit airport after rescreening.
Power banks must stay in the cabin, and some airlines restrict using them on board. Transit visas depend on nationality and whether you leave the airport, so check official guidance for your route.
Keep an eye on boarding times. Gates at large hubs can be far apart, and transit queues can be long.
Check connection times carefully too. If your first flight is delayed, a short connection can become tight. Many airlines and hubs have minimum connection times, and knowing yours helps you decide whether to rush or rest.
A sample long layover checklist
Documents in an outer pocket. Toiletry kit in a clear pouch. Full outfit change in a cube. Tech pouch with power bank and adapter. Medicines. Eye mask, earplugs, shawl. Water bottle and snacks. Small bag for valuables if you shower in a lounge.
Pack this way, and a long layover becomes a chance to rest, refresh and even enjoy a good meal before the second flight.

If your layover is long enough to leave the airport and you are eligible, a quick city visit can be the highlight of your trip. Keep your cabin bag light enough to carry around or use a storage facility, and keep plenty of time for re-entry security.
