The routine in brief
A good luggage care routine after a trip takes about twenty minutes: unpack fully within a day, shake out and vacuum the interior, wipe the shell or fabric, clean the wheels and handles, check zips, locks and seams for damage, leave the bag open to air for a few hours, and then store it dry in a breathable cover. Doing this every time is what keeps a ₹15,000 spinner or a ₹25,000 leather weekender looking and working like new for years.
Most luggage damage is not dramatic. It is the slow build-up of grit in zips, hair in wheels, moisture in linings and small cracks that go unnoticed until a handle snaps on the way to the airport. A consistent routine catches those problems early. Below is the checklist we suggest, in the order that makes the work quickest.

Step 1: Unpack within 24 hours
It is tempting to leave the suitcase in a corner for a week after a long trip, but that is when trouble starts. Damp clothes, swimwear, used towels and shoes release moisture and odour into the lining, especially after beach holidays in Goa or Bali and monsoon trips anywhere in India. Food items, from airport snacks to homemade laddoos from a relative, attract insects.
Empty everything, including small pockets, and sort laundry immediately. Remove any loose coins, receipts, boarding passes and toiletry bottles. Check for leaks from shampoo, sunscreen or perfume and treat any spills on the lining straight away before they set.
If you cannot unpack fully the same day, at least open the case and pull out anything damp.
A quick rule many seasoned travellers follow is that the suitcase is not put away until the laundry from the trip is in the machine. Tying the two tasks together means the case is always emptied promptly, and you never find a forgotten swimsuit or damp kurta in a pocket three weeks later, by which time the lining may already smell.
Step 2: Shake, vacuum and air
Turn the empty case upside down over a balcony or bathroom floor and give it a good shake to dislodge sand, hair and dust. Then vacuum the interior with a brush or upholstery attachment, paying attention to corners, zip tracks and mesh pockets.
Leave the case open in a shaded, ventilated place for at least two to three hours, longer in humid weather. A ceiling fan helps. Airing is the simplest way to prevent musty smells and mould, and it costs nothing.
If the interior smells after a long trip, sprinkle baking soda inside, leave it for a few hours or overnight and vacuum it out.
Step 3: Wipe the exterior
For hard-shell cases, wipe the shell with a microfibre cloth dampened in warm water and a little mild dish soap, then wipe again with a plain damp cloth and dry. Deal with belt marks while they are fresh; they come off far more easily now than after a month. For soft luggage, brush off dry dirt and spot-clean marks with a mild detergent solution.
For leather duffles, wipe with a dry or very lightly damp cloth and leave to dry naturally. If the leather looks dull or got wet, plan to condition it once it is completely dry. Wipe carry handles with a sanitising cloth, since many hands have touched them at the airport.
If you used a luggage cover, take it off now and wash it separately.
Vanity and toiletry cases deserve their own attention. Take out every bottle, wipe the interior with a mild soapy cloth to remove product residue and leave it open to dry. Makeup and cream residue left inside is one of the quickest routes to mould and stains in small travel cases, and a two-minute wipe now prevents a ruined lining later.
Step 4: Wheels and handles
Lay the case on its back and check every wheel. Pull out hair and thread with tweezers, scrub with a toothbrush and soapy water if dirty, and dry. Spin each wheel to check it runs smoothly and quietly. Every few trips, add a drop of silicone or dry PTFE lubricant to the axles and swivels.
Extend and retract the telescopic handle a few times. It should lock at each height and move smoothly. Wipe the tubes with a damp cloth to remove grit. Check the top and side carry handles for loose screws or stitching.
On spinners, also look at how each wheel sits. If one corner looks lower or the case rocks when standing, a wheel housing may have been knocked out of line. Catching this now, when you have time to arrange a repair, is far better than discovering it while rushing through a terminal.
Step 5: Zips, locks and seams
Run every zip fully open and closed. Brush grit out of the teeth and rub a little graphite or zipper wax onto any that feel stiff. Look for teeth separating behind the slider, which suggests a worn slider that needs attention before your next trip.
Test the TSA lock with your combination to make sure it still opens; inspection by security can occasionally leave locks stiff. Check seams, corners and edges for cracks, splits or loose stitching. Run your hand around hard-shell corners, where hairline cracks often start.
If you find damage that happened during the flight, contact the airline promptly, as damage claims usually have strict time limits. If it is a defect, check your warranty.
Pay special attention after international journeys with several connections, where bags are handled many times, and after trips by road or rail in India, where luggage often rides in boots, on roof racks or under berths. These journeys produce more knocks and grime than a single direct flight, so the inspection matters more.
Step 6: Note repairs and restock
Keep a note on your phone of anything that needs fixing, such as a wobbly wheel or a stiff zip, and schedule it well before your next trip. Repairs at a service centre can take a week or more, and you do not want to discover a problem the night before a wedding trip.
This is also a good time to restock your travel kit: refill toiletry bottles, replace used silica gel packets, recharge power banks and put your passport and travel documents back in their usual place. Future you will be grateful.
If you travel often, keep a small care kit near where you store your luggage: microfibre cloths, a toothbrush, tweezers, mild soap, a lubricant spray, graphite or zipper wax, silica gel packets and a leather conditioner if you own leather bags. With everything in one box, the routine takes minutes rather than becoming a chore you postpone.
Step 7: Store it right
Once the case is clean, dry and checked, close it with the handle retracted and zips closed. Put a couple of silica gel packets inside, especially during monsoon. Store it in a breathable cotton dust bag or cover, not plastic, in a dry, ventilated spot away from bathroom walls and windows with strong sun.
Nest smaller cases inside larger ones if space is tight, with a cloth between them. Leather duffles should be stuffed lightly with tissue and stored upright in a dust bag. Open stored luggage every few weeks in the rainy season to air it.
Also keep a short note of each bag's details in your phone: brand, model, purchase date, where the invoice is saved and your lock code hint. When a problem needs a warranty claim or you need to describe a lost bag to an airline, you will have everything ready in seconds.
Why a routine pays off
Luggage is a significant purchase, and the price premium of a good brand buys better materials, smoother wheels and longer warranties. A simple routine protects that investment and keeps your bags ready to go whenever travel calls. It also makes packing more pleasant when the case smells fresh and rolls smoothly.
