Luggage for Canada study, in brief
For Canada study, most Indian students pack two large lightweight spinners, a cabin trolley and a laptop backpack, keeping within their ticket allowance, which on many India to Canada economy fares is two checked bags of around 23 kilos each, though this varies by airline. What makes Canada different is winter: your luggage plan must cover arriving into possible snow and getting from the airport to your room in sub-zero temperatures.
Students heading to Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, Calgary or smaller towns in Ontario and the Prairies face very different climates. Vancouver is mild and wet; the Prairies can be brutally cold. Know your city's winter before you decide how much to pack and how much to buy after landing.
Read your college's pre-arrival guide before buying anything. Canadian colleges and universities commonly publish detailed checklists covering what housing provides, arrival services and the documents border officers may ask to see. Combining that guide with the climate of your specific city gives you a far better luggage plan than any generic list.

Choosing suitcases for snow and slush
Hard-shell polycarbonate spinners resist moisture well, and that matters when you are dragging bags across a slushy pavement or through a snowy campus. Larger wheels roll better through slush than tiny ones; some students prefer two-wheel uprights with bigger inline wheels for winter arrivals because spinners struggle in snow.
Soft luggage absorbs water, so if you choose a fabric bag, look for coated ballistic nylon and pack clothes in waterproof cubes. A large soft duffle is also handy in Canada for storing winter gear in summer. Brands like Samsonite, American Tourister, Delsey, Safari and Skybags offer large spinners from about ₹5,000 to ₹15,000.
Wheels deserve particular attention. Tiny spinner wheels clog with slush and snow, so if your accommodation is a walk from the bus stop, a bag you can tilt and pull on two larger wheels may serve you better in midwinter. Some spinners have larger double wheels that cope reasonably well with rough surfaces. Wipe wheels and shells after use in winter, since road salt can stain and stiffen moving parts over time.
Arriving in winter: the cabin bag plan
If you arrive for a January intake, pack a proper insulated jacket, thermal innerwear, a woollen cap, gloves, warm socks and waterproof boots or shoes in your cabin luggage or wear them on the flight. Stepping out of Toronto Pearson in January in a cotton hoodie is a mistake many students make once.
The cabin trolley should also hold three days of clothes, toiletries, chargers, medicines and documents. Typical cabin allowances are around seven to ten kilos depending on the airline; confirm before packing. Wear your bulkiest boots and jacket on the plane to save space and weight in checked bags.
Even students arriving in late August or early September should keep one warm layer in the cabin bag. Air-conditioned flights and airports can be cold, and nights in many Canadian cities start to drop in temperature by late September. A packable down or synthetic jacket compresses into a small pouch and is one of the most useful things you can carry.
Canada packing list from India
Clothing: two weeks of everyday wear, several layers such as thermals, jumpers and fleece, one formal outfit for interviews, ethnic wear for festivals and Diwali events, which are big in Canadian cities with large Indian communities, and comfortable shoes. Bring a couple of warm items to get started even for a September arrival.
Essentials: Type A and B plug adaptors (Canada uses the same plugs as the US, at around 120 volts), medicines with prescriptions, spectacles, a small first-aid kit, a pressure cooker and favourite spices if your accommodation allows cooking. Documents in the cabin: passport, study permit approval letter, letter of acceptance, proof of funds, accommodation details and medical records.
Indian students often underestimate how much they will use indoor clothing. Canadian homes and campuses are heated, so you will wear light clothes indoors and pile layers on when going out. That makes layering pieces, such as a light cardigan, a fleece, a long-sleeved T-shirt and a scarf, more useful than many thick sweaters. Pack a few cosy pieces for evenings at home and a pair of indoor slippers, because outdoor boots are usually taken off at the door.
Buy your heavy winter gear in Canada
The best parkas, snow boots and gloves for Canadian winters are sold in Canada, designed for the climate and often discounted in autumn and post-holiday sales. Buying locally saves heavy luggage weight and gives you gear rated for the actual temperatures you will face, which can be far colder than anything in India.
Bedding, kitchen appliances and furniture are also easy to buy locally or second-hand. Many universities and Indian student groups run sales or exchange networks for these items, helping new students set up cheaply.
Food and customs rules
Canada has strict rules on food, plant and animal products. You must declare food items on arrival, and some products may be restricted. Pack spices and packaged goods in sealed, labelled containers and check official Canadian border guidance before travel to avoid fines.
Large Indian grocery stores exist in Brampton, Surrey, Mississauga and many other cities, so you do not need to bring months of supplies. Bring only the special items you cannot find, and save the weight for clothing and personal items.
When in doubt, declare. Declaring an item that turns out to be allowed simply means a quick check, while failing to declare restricted items can lead to penalties. Keep a list of the food items you carry in your cabin bag so you can answer questions quickly, and keep homemade items to a minimum.
Packing for weight limits
Weigh each bag with a luggage scale and aim for a little under the limit. Heavy items go at the wheel end; compression bags help with jumpers but not with weight. Many students pack too many clothes from India; a smaller, well-chosen wardrobe plus a few local purchases is smarter.
Put a sheet with your name, Canadian address and phone number inside each bag. Use a TSA-accepted lock if your route connects through the US; otherwise it is still convenient. Photograph each bag and its contents list before departure for any insurance claims.
It also helps to plan your bags by category. Many students put clothes in one large case, kitchen items, shoes and books in the other, and keep documents and electronics in the cabin. This makes unpacking simpler on arrival and means if one bag is delayed, you know exactly what you are missing and what you need to buy in the meantime.
Airport to campus with heavy bags
Major Canadian airports connect to cities by trains, buses and taxis. In winter, waiting at a bus stop with two large suitcases is hard, so pre-book a cab or check whether your college offers an airport pick-up service. Indian student associations at many colleges also arrange arrival help.
Strap your cabin bag to one spinner's handle and wear the backpack so you can manage with two hands. If you are moving into a basement apartment, common in some Canadian cities, expect stairs, so keep each bag light enough to lift.
Keep in mind that the first night may be in temporary accommodation if your lease starts later. In that case, pack an overnight pouch in the cabin bag with essentials, so you do not have to open your big suitcases in a hostel or a friend's living room. Many students move twice in the first month, which is another reason to keep each bag manageable.
Picking a brand and budget
Look for durable, lightweight spinners with strong wheels, recessed locks and an international warranty, typically from about ₹6,000 to ₹15,000 per large case. Darker colours hide winter grime better than pale shells, which can show salt stains from treated roads.
Choose a colour or strap that makes your bags easy to spot, and keep receipts and warranty cards in your email. These bags will become your storage boxes, your trips home and your weekend getaways for years.
