Luggage for a Europe trip from India: the short answer
For a 10 to 15 day Europe trip from India, the smartest luggage is one medium hard-shell spinner of roughly 65 to 70 cm (around 60 to 80 litres) plus a carry-on backpack or tote, rather than two large suitcases. Europe means trains, staircases, small hotel lifts and cobbled lanes, and every extra kilo becomes something you physically lift several times a day.
Most Indian travellers fly to Europe on full-service carriers such as Air India, Emirates, Qatar or Lufthansa, where economy check-in allowances are typically generous. The temptation is to fill that allowance on the way out. Resist it. Pack to roughly two-thirds of your allowance so there is room for shopping in Paris or Zurich, and so the bag stays manageable when you are dragging it from a Venice vaporetto stop to your guesthouse.
A useful test before you leave home: pack the suitcase fully, then walk it around your building, take it down one flight of stairs and lift it onto a bed. If any of those three moments makes you wince, remove a kilo or two. That ten-minute rehearsal prevents most of the regrets Indian travellers report after their first Europe holiday.

Why Europe is different from a Dubai or Singapore holiday
In Dubai or Singapore you are usually door-to-door in taxis, with hotels that have porters and big lifts. Europe is a walking continent. A typical itinerary such as Paris, Interlaken, Venice and Rome involves at least three intercity trains, a few metro rides and at least one hotel without a lift at all, especially in older buildings in Amsterdam, Florence and Prague.
That changes what matters in a suitcase. Weight of the empty bag matters more than raw capacity. Wheel quality matters more than colour. And a bag you can lift onto an overhead train rack without help matters more than squeezing in a fifth pair of shoes. Indian families used to carrying everything for every possibility find Europe is where the pack-light lesson finally lands, usually halfway up a narrow staircase in a Parisian hotel.
Budget airlines are the other big difference. If your itinerary includes a hop such as Barcelona to Rome or Amsterdam to Prague on a low-cost carrier, the checked bag may be an expensive add-on and the free cabin item may be no bigger than a small backpack. Plan the long-haul allowance and the intra-Europe allowance separately, and buy any extra bags online in advance, where prices are usually lower than at the counter.
The right suitcase size and material for Europe
A 65 to 70 cm medium spinner is the sweet spot for most women travelling 10 to 15 days. Large 75 to 80 cm suitcases hold more than 100 litres and, when full, easily cross 23 kg, which many European train racks and small hotel rooms simply are not built for. If you are travelling as a couple, two mediums are far easier than one large plus one cabin.
For material, polycarbonate shells are the most practical. They flex under impact and pop back, which helps when bags are stacked in coach holds on group tours. ABS is cheaper and lighter on the wallet but cracks more easily with rough handling. Aluminium looks spectacular but dents and is heavy, so it suits a city-break, not a five-country rail itinerary. Premium brands such as Samsonite, Delsey and Tumi build their mid-size shells with this kind of use in mind, and you can compare options across our luxury travel bags edit.
Colour is a practical choice as well. Black and navy suitcases dominate European baggage belts, so a deep green, champagne, burgundy or textured grey bag is easier to spot in Frankfurt or Zurich. Add a leather luggage tag with your mobile number including the plus 91 code and an email address, and slip a printed itinerary inside the case in case the outer tag is torn off.
Wheels, handles and cobblestones
Eight-wheel spinners glide beautifully on airport floors, but on Roman sampietrini or the cobbles of Bruges they rattle, catch and wobble. Look for larger double-spinner wheels with rubberised treads, and practise tilting the bag onto two wheels and pulling it like a two-wheeler when the surface gets rough. A bag with solid, recessed wheel housings survives this far better than one with small exposed casters.
Check the telescopic handle too. A multi-stage aluminium handle with minimal wobble saves your wrist over a long walk from a station to an Airbnb. A top grab handle and a side handle are non-negotiable, because you will be lifting the bag onto racks, into taxis and up stairs. Before you buy, imagine lifting it full to shoulder height; if that seems hard, size down.
If you are travelling on a coach tour, the driver typically loads bags into the hold for you, but you still wheel them from hotel rooms to the coach every second morning. Smooth wheels and a handle that locks firmly at your height turn that daily routine from a chore into a two-minute job, even at six in the morning in a Lucerne hotel car park.
Your carry-on: what goes in the cabin to Europe
Economy cabin baggage on long-haul carriers is typically around 7 kg, and some airlines allow a small personal item in addition, but rules vary by airline and fare class, so always confirm on your ticket. A structured 40 litre travel backpack or a large leather tote with a trolley sleeve works best, because it sits on top of your spinner and keeps your hands free at passport control.
Inside, pack your passport, printed Schengen visa copy, travel insurance, forex card, medicines, a change of clothes, a light shawl for cold cabins and chargers. If your checked bag is delayed at a connection in Doha or Frankfurt, this kit gets you through the first 24 hours in a European city without panic shopping. A slim sling bag inside the tote becomes your day bag once you land.
Seasoned travellers also keep one zipped pouch inside the carry-on for the transit airport alone: boarding passes, a pen for landing forms, earphones and an eye mask. On a twenty-hour journey with a connection, having those in one place means you are not unpacking your whole bag in a crowded gate area.
A sample packing list for 12 days in Europe
For a spring or autumn trip, think in outfits rather than items. Two pairs of well-cut trousers or jeans, one midi skirt, two dresses, five tops, one knit, a trench or tailored blazer, a lightweight puffer that packs into its own pouch, and thermals if you are going to the Alps. Shoes: one pair of cushioned white sneakers, one pair of loafers or ankle boots, and one dressier flat for dinners. That is it.
Add sleepwear, undergarments for seven days with a plan to hand-wash or use a laundrette, a compact toiletry kit with travel-size bottles, and a universal adaptor. Leave the heavy pressure cooker, the six kilos of snacks and the extra handbag at home. Most Indian groceries are available in large European cities, and a little khakhra or theplas in a zip pouch is enough comfort food for the journey.
For a winter trip in December or January, swap the trench for a long insulated coat, add thermal leggings and wool socks, and trade loafers for waterproof boots. Wear the coat and boots on the plane. A few silk or wool scarves change the look of the same outfits in every photograph, which matters more to most of us than packing a new dress for each city.
Security, locks and theft in European cities
Pickpocketing is a genuine concern around the Eiffel Tower, Barcelona's Las Ramblas, the Rome metro and crowded train stations. Your suitcase should have a built-in TSA-approved combination lock, which is useful on any USA connection and simply convenient elsewhere. Zippers on soft cases should have lockable pullers.
On trains, store bags in sight where possible, and use a thin cable lock if you need to leave the suitcase in the luggage rack at the end of the carriage. In the city, carry a crossbody sling with a zip closure worn in front, never a back pocket phone or an open tote. Keep your passport in a zipped inner pocket and carry a photocopy separately in the suitcase.
Hotels in Europe often have a small safe that fits a passport and a phone but not a laptop. If you must carry a laptop, a suitcase with a lock is your second line of defence. Never pack jewellery, cash or electronics in checked luggage on any leg; airlines generally limit liability for valuables, and delays at busy hubs are common in peak summer.
What the premium price actually buys
A budget spinner may look identical to a premium one in photographs, but the differences show up on day eight of a Europe trip. Better brands use thicker polycarbonate, sturdier wheel housings, quieter wheels and handles with less play, plus longer warranties that sometimes cover international repairs. Suitcases from roughly ₹8,000 to ₹25,000 from brands like Samsonite, American Tourister, Mokobara, Delsey and Victorinox cover most needs, with Tumi and Rimowa-style aluminium at the very top.
If you travel to Europe once every few years, a well-made mid-range spinner is enough. If you travel internationally twice a year, investing in one excellent medium spinner plus a durable carry-on pays for itself in fewer broken wheels and fewer last-minute replacements. Pair it with one good crossbody, sunglasses and comfortable footwear, and you are ready for almost any European city.
Finally, register your suitcase warranty as soon as you buy it and photograph the bag from all sides before the trip. If a wheel or handle breaks in transit, file a property irregularity report at the airport before you leave the baggage hall. That paperwork, along with your photos, makes both airline claims and warranty repairs much smoother when you return to India.
