Relocating within India: the luggage answer
The right luggage for relocating within India is usually two large or medium check-in suitcases, one or two soft duffles for bedding and odds and ends, and a cabin bag with documents, electronics and a week of essentials. Anything larger, such as furniture, kitchenware and books, is better sent through a packers and movers service or a courier, which is often cheaper and safer than carrying it yourself.
Many women move cities for work, studies or marriage: Pune to Bengaluru for a tech job, Lucknow to Delhi for a master's degree, Kolkata to Mumbai after a wedding, or Hyderabad to Gurugram on a transfer. The first few weeks in a new city are easier when the bags you carry are well chosen, organised and contain everything you need before the movers arrive.
Planning the split between what travels with you and what goes with movers is the first step.
Unlike moving abroad, a domestic move offers more flexibility. You can travel home more easily to pick up forgotten items, send parcels cheaply and buy almost anything locally. That means you do not need to carry everything at once. Focus your luggage on what makes the first month comfortable, and let the rest follow.

Flight, train or road: how mode changes luggage
Flying is fastest, but domestic airlines in India typically allow around 15 kg of checked baggage on standard economy fares, with paid options for more, plus a cabin bag of about 7 kg. Allowances vary by airline and fare, so check carefully and buy extra baggage online in advance, which is usually cheaper than paying at the airport.
Trains offer more generous allowances by class, and you can book excess luggage at the parcel office. Bags must still fit under berths or racks, so slim suitcases and duffles work best. Driving or hiring a car lets you carry far more, especially in an SUV, and is ideal if you are moving with family or pets.
Combine modes if it helps: send bulky items by road with movers and fly with only essentials.
Driving yourself is increasingly popular for relocations between nearby cities, such as Mumbai to Pune or Delhi to Jaipur. A hatchback or SUV can carry several soft bags, kitchen essentials and plants. Pack heavy items low in the boot, keep valuables in the cabin and plan a single trip with movers for furniture.
Choosing suitcases for a city move
Large 75 to 79 cm suitcases hold the most but can quickly cross airline weight limits. For flights, a medium 65 to 69 cm bag often reaches 15 kg without waste. For trains and cars, large soft suitcases and duffles squeeze in more easily. Choose strong wheels, sturdy handles and good zips; moving days are rough on luggage.
Hard polycarbonate protects electronics accessories and fragile items, while soft suitcases are lighter and easier to store in a smaller first apartment or PG room. After the move, these bags become your travel luggage for trips home during Diwali and weddings, so invest in quality that lasts.
Brands like Safari, VIP, American Tourister, Skybags, Samsonite and Nasher Miles offer large suitcases from about ₹5,000.
What to carry yourself and what to send
Carry yourself: documents such as your offer letter, ID, address proofs and educational certificates; your laptop, phone and chargers; jewellery and valuables; medicines; one to two weeks of clothes, including office wear; toiletries; a towel; bed linen; and a few kitchen basics if you will cook before the movers arrive.
Send with movers or courier: furniture, kitchenware, books, decor, appliances and seasonal clothes. Get written quotes, check insurance and inventory lists, and photograph valuable items before packing. Many people also leave items with family to collect on a later visit home.
Keep a copy of the movers' inventory in your cabin bag.
Before packing, sort belongings into three groups: carry, send and leave. Be honest about the leave pile; old clothes, broken electronics and duplicate kitchen items are cheaper to replace than to move. Donating or selling them before you go lightens the load and makes the new home feel fresh rather than cluttered.
Check your new building's rules on moving days too; some housing societies restrict move-in hours or lift use.
Packing techniques for moving day
Pack by room and by need. One suitcase holds work clothes and shoes; another holds casual clothes and home basics; a duffle takes bedding, pillows and towels. Use vacuum bags for quilts and winter clothes; they save space, though not weight.
Wrap fragile items in clothes. Label each bag inside and out with your name, phone and new address. Make a simple list of what is in each bag, which helps when unpacking and if anything goes missing. Keep heavy items near the wheels so bags stay stable when rolling.
Weigh every bag at home if you are flying, and rebalance before you leave for the airport.
Duffles are especially useful during a move. Large soft duffles of 70 to 90 litres carry bedding, cushions, towels and soft toys, which are bulky but light. They fold flat when empty and slide under a bed in a small rented room. Choose sturdy fabric with reinforced handles, since you will lift them in and out of cabs and up stairs.
Vacuum bags inside duffles reduce the bulk of quilts and pillows dramatically, making it possible to carry your favourite bedding on the train or plane rather than buying new.
Your first-week bag
The cabin bag or a large tote should let you live comfortably for the first week, even if the movers are delayed. Pack five work outfits, two casual outfits, sleepwear, innerwear, a toiletry kit, medicines, chargers, a power bank, important documents, a towel and a set of bed linen. Add a small kitchen kit with a mug, a spoon and tea bags if you like.
Office wear deserves care. Fold blazers, shirts and trousers neatly in a garment folder, or carry them in a garment bag, so you look polished on your first day. A structured work tote that fits a laptop will carry you from the airport to your new desk.
Keep the lease agreement and landlord contact details handy.
Carry a few comfort items too. A familiar pillowcase, a framed photo, a favourite mug or a scented candle can make an empty apartment feel like home on the first night. These personal touches weigh little and help a lot during the unsettled first weeks in a new city.
City-specific considerations
Moving to Bengaluru means pleasant weather but a monsoon season, so pack umbrellas and quick-dry clothes. Mumbai's humidity calls for breathable fabrics and anti-mould storage. Delhi and the north need proper winter clothing from November to February. Chennai and Hyderabad call for light cotton most of the year.
Housing matters too. Many first homes are PG accommodations or shared flats with limited storage. Soft bags that fold flat or nest inside each other are easier to store under beds or on top of wardrobes.
Buy bulky everyday items, such as buckets, hangers and basic utensils, after arrival.
Moving for marriage often means carrying wedding jewellery, sarees and gifts. These deserve special care: carry jewellery in your cabin bag, pack heavy silk sarees flat in garment folders or saree covers, and use a hard-shell suitcase for anything delicate. Insure valuable items where possible and keep receipts or photographs.
Relocation luggage mistakes
Overpacking checked bags beyond airline limits, carrying items cheaper to buy locally, packing documents in checked luggage and using cheap bags that break on moving day are the most common mistakes. Others include not getting movers' insurance, forgetting chargers and adapters, and not labelling bags.
Do not leave packing to the last night. Start a week ahead, pack non-essentials first and keep a final-day list. And keep a first-week bag separate so you are not searching through every suitcase on your first evening.
Finally, keep receipts and warranty cards for your luggage in case a wheel or handle breaks during the move.
Move with confidence
Well-chosen suitcases, a soft duffle and a strong first-week bag make relocating within India much easier. The same luggage will carry you home for festivals for years.
