The ideal luggage for students going abroad
For most Indian students going abroad, the ideal luggage is two large check-in suitcases of about 75 to 79 cm, one cabin spinner or trolley, and one laptop backpack. That set uses the common economy allowance of two checked bags at around 23 kilos each on many long-haul routes, plus cabin baggage, but allowances vary widely by airline, route and fare, so confirm yours before buying anything.
Students are packing for a year, not a holiday, and they are often moving into a hostel or shared flat with no car to collect them. The luggage has to carry a life's worth of essentials, survive rough handling across several airports, and then be manageable on a train or a bus from the airport to the campus. That combination makes size, weight and wheels more important than style.

Why empty weight decides everything
If your allowance is 23 kilos per bag, a heavy case can eat a surprising share of it. A large polycarbonate spinner typically weighs around four to five kilos, while some cheaper or aluminium models weigh more. Every kilo saved on the shell is a kilo of clothes, books or food from home. Check the empty weight on the listing before you compare anything else.
Polycarbonate is the usual recommendation for students: light, flexible under pressure and good at surviving baggage handling across connections in the Gulf or Europe. Soft-sided trolleys in ballistic nylon are lighter still and have expandable sections, but offer less protection for fragile items. Brands such as American Tourister, Safari, Skybags, VIP, Samsonite and Nasher Miles make large spinners suitable for students, many from around ₹5,000 to ₹12,000.
Two large bags, or one large and one medium?
Two large cases maximise volume, but filling both to 23 kilos means handling around 46 kilos alone on arrival. If you are travelling solo and taking public transport to the campus, a large plus a medium may be wiser; the medium fills to weight quickly with books and kitchen items while staying easy to lift.
Some students take a large suitcase plus a big soft duffle, which folds flat and stores easily in a small hostel room. The duffle also becomes your weekend bag for trips during term. Whatever combination you choose, distribute weight so neither bag goes over the limit, and carry a luggage scale; overweight fees on international flights are expensive.
Cabin bag and laptop backpack
Your cabin baggage is your safety net. A 55 cm cabin trolley typically holds around 35 to 40 litres, and many international economy fares allow around seven kilos in the cabin, though some carriers are more generous. Pack it with three days of clothes, toiletries, chargers, medicines, and copies of admission and visa documents, in case a checked bag goes astray on a connection.
The laptop backpack carries your laptop, original documents, passport, wallet and phone. Choose one with a padded laptop sleeve, a luggage strap that slides over the trolley handle and a hidden pocket for the passport. It will become your everyday campus bag, so pick something comfortable and durable. Ensure it counts within your airline's personal item or cabin allowance.
Study abroad packing list: what to take from India
Clothes: a week of everyday outfits, one or two smart outfits for presentations and interviews, ethnic wear for festivals and cultural nights, sleepwear, innerwear for two weeks, and one good jacket if you are going somewhere cold, though heavy winter coats are often better bought locally. Footwear: sneakers, formal shoes, slippers and sandals.
Home comforts and practicals: a pressure cooker or small kitchen basics if your accommodation allows cooking, spices packed in sealed containers (check the destination's customs rules on food), a couple of photos, a small first-aid kit with prescriptions, spectacles and lens supplies, universal adaptors, and stationery you love. Documents: passport, visa, admission letters, financial documents, transcripts, passport-size photos and an international debit card, carried in the cabin.
What to buy after you land
Bedding, duvets, pillows, heavy winter coats, boots, a hair dryer and kitchen appliances with plugs are usually better purchased at your destination. They are bulky, voltage and plug types differ, and student shops and supermarkets near campuses often sell starter packs. That frees space and weight for items that are hard or expensive to replace.
Ask seniors on your course or the university's Indian student association what is cheap and what is not. Their advice is specific to your city and far more useful than generic lists. Many universities also run welcome sales where returning students sell kitchenware and bedding at low prices.
Packing technique and money-saving tips
Put the heaviest items, shoes, books, and kitchen gear, at the wheel end of each suitcase, so it stays stable when upright and does not tip when rolling. Roll clothes and use compression cubes, but be careful: compression saves space, not weight. It is easy to compress your way past the limit.
Wrap fragile items in clothes, and pack liquids in sealed zip bags. Put a sheet inside each bag listing your name, contact number, and university address, in case the outer tag is lost. Use a TSA-accepted lock if you are flying to or through the United States; for other routes it is still a convenient lock.
Buy a reliable, mid-range set rather than the cheapest bags you can find. A wheel that snaps off at the first transfer airport is a nightmare when you have 23 kilos to move. Look for warranty coverage that works internationally, so you can claim service in the country where you will live.
Check whether your airline offers extra student baggage allowance; some carriers have student fares with additional baggage, so compare total costs including bags, not just ticket prices. Use the same suitcases for the trip back home in summer, and store them flat under your bed during term.
Country-specific tips
The UK, US, Canada and Australia each have their own quirks: different climates, different customs rules on food, and different costs for things you might take from home. Australia and Canada in particular are strict about food and plant products, so check what you may bring and declare items honestly at arrival.
Plan for the climate at your arrival time, not the average. Arriving in Toronto in January needs a warm jacket in your cabin bag; arriving in Sydney in February needs sunscreen and light clothes. Pack the first few days' outfits in the cabin bag so you are comfortable even before you unpack.
Seasonal timing also shapes what goes in the suitcase. Students joining a September intake in the northern hemisphere arrive in mild weather and have a couple of months to buy winter gear locally, often at better prices and with better local knowledge of what actually works. Students joining a January intake, by contrast, should carry a proper insulated jacket, gloves and thermal innerwear in the cabin bag, because they will need them at the arrival airport. For Australia's February intake, it is the reverse: light cotton clothes, sunglasses and sunscreen come first, and woollens can wait until the cooler months from around May.
Arrival day: moving your luggage to campus
Arrival day is when luggage choices are tested. After a long flight you may face a train, a bus or a long walk with two big suitcases, a cabin bag and a backpack. Before you fly, check whether your university runs an airport pick-up service for international students; many do during orientation weeks, and it is worth booking early because slots fill up. If not, compare a pre-booked cab or shared shuttle with public transport, keeping in mind that metros and buses are tiring with four bags.
A simple trick is to strap the cabin bag onto the handle of one large spinner and wear the backpack, leaving you with two rolling units and one free hand. Practise this at home with fully packed bags, timing how long you can comfortably manage. Keep your accommodation address, booking reference and a local SIM or eSIM ready, so you are not searching for details at the airport exit while guarding your luggage. Once you reach your room, unpack the cabin bag first and leave the big cases for the next morning.
