Luggage for a three-month trip: the answer
For a three-month trip, most women do best with a single medium suitcase of 65 to 69 cm or a 45 to 60 litre travel backpack, plus a day bag and a small sling. It sounds too little, but long-term travel is about rotating a small wardrobe, doing regular laundry and buying what you need locally. Carrying three months of clothes makes every move exhausting.
Sabbaticals, career breaks, long visits to children studying abroad, extended work-from-anywhere stints in Bali or Lisbon, and slow travel across South America or Southeast Asia are increasingly common among Indian women. These journeys involve dozens of transport changes, varied climates and many different accommodations, so luggage choice affects every week.
The guiding principle: pack for two weeks, then repeat.
It also helps to think of your luggage as a mobile home rather than a holiday wardrobe. Everything in it should earn its place by being used weekly. If you can imagine an item sitting unused at the bottom of the bag for a month, leave it behind. You can almost always buy what you missed on the road.

Suitcase or travel backpack?
A medium spinner suitcase suits trips based in cities with good pavements and taxis, or slow travel with long stays in rented apartments. It protects clothes, opens like a wardrobe and looks polished at business meetings or family homes. The downside is stairs, cobbles, beaches and buses.
A travel backpack of 45 to 60 litres suits frequent moves, rural areas, islands and budget transport. It frees your hands and handles any terrain. Front-opening travel packs open like a suitcase, making packing easier than traditional top-loading backpacks. Some women choose a wheeled duffle with backpack straps for the best of both.
Whatever you choose, keep the packed weight around 12 to 15 kg so you can carry it alone.
Weight matters even more on long trips because it compounds. Twelve kilograms carried twice a week for three months is a lot of lifting. Choose a light shell or pack, and resist the urge to fill every litre. A bag packed to 80 percent is easier to close, quicker to repack and leaves room for the inevitable small purchases.
If you are visiting family for part of the trip, you can leave one bag with them and travel lighter for the rest, collecting it before flying home.
A rotating capsule wardrobe
Choose a colour palette that works in every climate on your route, such as navy, white, grey and olive, with one accent. Pack about seven tops, four bottoms, two dresses, a light jacket, a warm layer, sleepwear, seven sets of innerwear, two swimsuits and three pairs of shoes. Every piece should work with several others.
Prioritise fabrics that travel well: merino for odour resistance, linen and cotton blends for heat, quick-dry synthetics for active days, and jersey for wrinkle-free dresses. If the route crosses climates, plan to buy a warm jacket where it is cold and donate or ship it on before moving to the tropics.
Accessories change outfits cheaply: scarves, earrings, sunglasses and a watch.
Shoes deserve special thought. Walking sneakers for daily use, a pair of sandals that can be dressed up, and one pair for your specific activity, such as hiking boots or dance shoes, are usually enough. Shoes are the heaviest clothing items, and three good pairs outperform six mediocre ones over three months.
Laundry and wardrobe maintenance
Plan laundry every week. Apartments often have washing machines; laundromats and hotel laundry services are common worldwide. Carry detergent sheets, a travel clothesline and a stain remover pen. Wash innerwear and quick-dry tops in the sink between laundry days.
Over three months, some clothes will wear out or stop suiting you. Replacing them locally is part of the experience. A market dress in Bangkok or a knit from a Lisbon boutique becomes a souvenir and refreshes your wardrobe. Donate tired items rather than carrying them.
Repair kits with needle, thread, safety pins and a few buttons extend the life of your favourite pieces.
Think about drying time when choosing clothes. In humid places like Bali, Kerala or Vietnam, thick cotton can stay damp for a day or more, while modal, linen blends and merino dry overnight. Wardrobes built around quick-dry fabrics make weekly laundry realistic even without a dryer.
A small mesh laundry bag keeps dirty clothes ventilated in a closed suitcase, which matters a great deal over months in hot climates.
Health, documents and tech for long trips
Carry a three-month supply of prescription medicines in original packaging with copies of prescriptions, plus a well-stocked first-aid kit. Check whether medicines are permitted in each country. Travel insurance that covers long stays is essential.
Keep passports, visas, insurance papers and bank cards in a secure document pouch, with digital copies in cloud storage. A laptop or tablet, phone, universal adapter, power bank and a compact multi-port charger usually cover tech needs. Keep electronics and documents in your day bag on travel days.
Notify your bank about international travel and carry at least two cards in separate places.
Long trips also require planning for personal care. Carry enough of any specialised skincare or haircare you rely on, or research local equivalents. Menstrual products, contact lenses and prescription glasses deserve backups. A small pouch of these essentials in the day bag prevents stressful searches in unfamiliar pharmacies abroad.
If you work remotely during the trip, a lightweight laptop stand, a compact keyboard and noise-cancelling earphones turn cafes and rented flats into productive workspaces without much weight.
Day bag and sling: your daily companions
Your day bag is used every day for three months, so choose carefully. A 15 to 25 litre backpack or a zip-top tote that fits a laptop works as both a flight personal item and a daily bag for exploring, working from cafes and grocery shopping.
A small crossbody sling carries phone, cards, cash and sunglasses for evenings and crowded markets. Choose durable, water-resistant materials and neutral colours that suit both city and nature settings.
Packable totes are handy for markets and beach days.
Handling long-term luggage logistics
Long trips often include stops where you will not need everything. Many hotels and hostels store luggage for travellers, and some cities have luggage storage services. You can leave a suitcase at a base city and take a smaller bag on side trips.
Shipping items home midway, such as souvenirs, gifts and seasonal clothes, keeps your luggage light. Compare postal and courier options in each country. Keep an eye on airline baggage rules for each flight, especially regional low-cost carriers.
Weigh your bag regularly; long trips slowly accumulate items.
Plan the return journey too. After three months you will likely have gifts and souvenirs, and your bag may be heavier than when you left. Check your return flight allowance, ship heavier souvenirs early, and use a foldable duffle as a second bag if your ticket allows. Paying for an extra bag online in advance is usually cheaper than paying at the airport.
Mistakes to avoid on a long trip
Packing for the whole three months, carrying multiple large bags, choosing heavy luggage, forgetting medicines and ignoring visa rules are common mistakes. Others include packing for one climate only, keeping all money in one place and buying too many souvenirs early.
Another mistake is choosing flimsy luggage. Over three months, a bag faces dozens of journeys. Strong zips, durable fabric and good wheels or straps prevent mid-trip failures.
Finally, do not neglect comfort: a supportive day bag and good walking shoes matter more than any outfit.
A final mistake is underestimating how often you will repack. Over three months, you may pack and unpack thirty times. Packing cubes, a consistent system and a light bag make this routine quick. Without them, repacking becomes a daily frustration that eats into the joy of travel.
Travel long, travel light
One medium suitcase or travel pack, a day bag and a sling, with laundry and local shopping, are enough for three months of adventures.
