How to choose luggage for US study
For US study, most Indian students carry two large check-in suitcases of about 75 to 79 cm with TSA-accepted locks, one cabin trolley and a laptop backpack, packed to the allowance on their ticket, commonly two checked pieces of around 23 kilos each in economy on many India to US routes, though airlines and fares differ. TSA-accepted locks matter here more than anywhere else, because US security can open checked bags for inspection.
Journeys to the US are long: twenty hours or more with a connection in the Gulf, Europe or East Asia, then often a domestic flight to a college town. Luggage gets handled many times. That makes durable shells, strong wheels and good internal organisation far more valuable than a trendy look, though there is no reason you cannot have both.
Before buying, read your university's international student pre-departure guide. Many include a packing list tailored to the local climate, details of airport pick-ups and advice on what is provided in housing. A student heading to Arizona needs a very different wardrobe from one heading to Boston or Minneapolis, and the right luggage plan follows from the right clothing plan.

Why TSA-accepted locks are essential
The US Transportation Security Administration may need to open checked bags for screening. If your lock is not TSA-accepted, it may be cut or broken. Look for the red diamond TSA logo on built-in combination locks or on separate padlocks; most mid-range and premium luggage from brands like Samsonite, American Tourister, Delsey, Victorinox and Tumi includes them.
If a bag is opened, you may find a notice of inspection inside. Pack neatly in cubes so items can be checked and replaced without chaos, and keep anything valuable or fragile in your cabin bag. Set a combination you will remember and practise opening it before you leave.
Sizes and weight for a long-haul move
Two large 75 to 79 cm spinners are the most popular choice because they fit within typical checked-size limits while maximising volume, often 100 litres or more each. Check the linear dimension limit on your airline, which is commonly around 158 cm total for checked bags, but confirm since policies vary.
Choose lightweight polycarbonate to keep empty weight around four to five kilos. If one bag will mostly carry heavy items like books, a kitchen set and shoes, a medium case may reach 23 kilos while being easier to handle. Use a luggage scale at home; overweight fees on US routes can be steep.
The domestic connection problem
Many students land at a major gateway like Newark, Chicago, Dallas or San Francisco and then connect on a US domestic flight to a smaller city. Domestic US fares may have different baggage rules from the international ticket, especially if booked separately. If your entire journey is on one ticket, the international allowance often applies throughout, but always verify with the airline.
At the first US airport you typically collect your checked bags, clear customs and re-drop them for the connecting flight. Leave enough connection time, keep bags easy to identify and have customs paperwork ready. A bright strap on each bag speeds up finding them on busy belts.
Build some buffer into the plan. Immigration queues at large gateways can be long during August, when thousands of international students arrive in the same few weeks, and you may need to wait for checked bags, clear customs and walk to another terminal. A connection of at least three hours on one ticket is far less stressful than a tight one, and if you miss it with two large suitcases, rebooking is much harder. Keep a snack, a refillable bottle and a phone power bank in the backpack so you are not stuck if the wait runs long.
US packing list from India
Clothing: two weeks of everyday wear, layers for air-conditioned classrooms, a couple of warm jumpers, thermal innerwear if heading to the Midwest or Northeast, one formal outfit for interviews and career fairs, ethnic wear for festivals and university cultural nights, sleepwear and comfortable walking shoes. US campuses are large and you will walk a lot.
Practical items: US plug adaptors (Type A and B), a multi-plug, prescriptions and a few months of regular medicines with the doctor's letter, spectacles and lens supplies, a small pressure cooker and favourite spices if allowed, a first-aid kit and a few home comforts. Documents in the cabin: passport with visa, I-20 or equivalent university form, admission letter, financial documents, vaccination records and transcripts.
Remember that American sizing for clothes and shoes differs from Indian sizing, and that some items such as well-fitting kurtas, salwar sets and comfortable ethnic footwear are harder to find in smaller college towns. Bring enough of those for the year. On the other hand, basic T-shirts, jeans, gym wear and sports shoes are easy to buy in the US, often on sale, so you do not need to fill your suitcases with them.
What to buy after you arrive
Large chain stores and online retailers in the US make it easy to buy bedding, kitchenware, winter coats, boots and electronics, often at student prices during back-to-school season. Appliances from India may not work well with US voltage, which is around 110 to 120 volts, so do not pack hair straighteners or irons unless they are dual-voltage.
Ask your university's Indian student association for a welcome guide; many organise airport pick-ups, temporary stays and second-hand sales of kitchen items and furniture. Packing less and buying locally reduces both your luggage stress and the chance of exceeding weight limits.
Cabin bag strategy for twenty-plus hours
Your cabin trolley needs three to four days of clothes, toiletries in a liquids bag, chargers, medicines, a warm layer and essential documents. On a long connection, a fresh change of clothes and a toothbrush make a huge difference. Typical cabin allowances on international carriers are around seven to ten kilos, but confirm with your airline.
Your laptop backpack should hold the laptop, passport, wallet, phone and the documents immigration officers may ask to see at the port of entry, such as your university form and financial proof. Keep them in a single folder so you are not unpacking in the immigration queue.
Packing tips for durability
Pack heavy items at the wheel end and fill gaps with soft items so nothing shifts. Wrap any glass or ceramics thickly in clothes, or better, leave them at home. Seal spices and liquids in double zip bags, as a burst bottle across a twenty-hour journey can ruin a whole bag of clothes.
Put a sheet inside each suitcase with your name, US phone number if you have one, email and university address. External tags get torn off; the inside sheet helps airlines return your bag if it is misrouted.
Use packing cubes in different colours for different categories, such as tops, bottoms, innerwear and ethnic wear, so that if a bag is opened for inspection the contents stay organised. Avoid overstuffing a hard case so the zip strains; a bulging zip is more likely to split under the pressure of being stacked in a cargo hold. Leave a little room for a TSA officer to repack anything they take out.
Budgeting for student luggage
Expect to spend around ₹6,000 to ₹15,000 per large spinner from reliable brands, more for premium lines with longer international warranties. Since your bags will make many long-haul trips during a two-year master's degree, durable wheels and handles pay for themselves.
Look for warranties that can be claimed in the US, and register the product if the brand asks you to. Choose a colour you like, because these suitcases will also be your storage boxes under the bed for the next few years.
It is also worth thinking about the return trip. Students often bring back more than they took, especially after graduation, when they may be carrying books, gifts and a whole life's worth of things. Expandable zips on spinners add a few centimetres of depth, which helps on these trips, though you must still respect weight limits. A foldable duffle tucked into one case can become a third piece for the journey home if your fare allows it.
