The mistakes that cost the most
The most common luggage set buying mistakes are choosing sizes you will not use, ignoring empty weight, settling for weak wheels, assuming the bags nest and picking a finish that scratches or dates quickly. Each of these turns an apparently good deal into luggage that frustrates you within a year or two, and a set multiplies every flaw by three.
A luggage set is usually a bigger purchase than a single suitcase, often from about ₹10,000 for a well-made mid-range set to considerably more for premium brands. It deserves the same care you would give to buying a good handbag or a pair of everyday shoes that you expect to last for years.
The good news is that every one of these mistakes is easy to avoid with a few minutes of checking before you buy. Below are the ten we see most often, with what to do instead.
Use them as a checklist when you compare sets online or in a store.
It is also easy to be swayed by festival sales and limited-time discounts. A steep discount on the wrong set is still the wrong set. Decide what you need first, then look for offers on sets that match, rather than letting the price tag make the decision for you.

Mistake 1 and 2: wrong sizes and poorly graded sets
The first mistake is buying a three-piece set when you only use two sizes. If you rarely take long or winter trips, the large suitcase may sit in the loft for years, taking space and adding nothing. Think about your last ten trips and which bag sizes they actually needed before deciding between two and three pieces.
The second is buying a set where the sizes are too close together. A medium of 65 cm and a large of 69 cm, for example, overlap so much that you will always pick the same one. A well-graded set has clear steps, typically around 55, 65 to 69 and 75 to 79 cm, so each bag has its own role.
Read the capacity in litres for each bag, not only the height label. The jump between sizes should be at least 20 to 30 litres to be genuinely useful.
If a range lets you choose your own combination, take advantage of it.
Mistake 3: ignoring empty weight
Many buyers check the price, colour and size, but not the empty weight. A heavy set eats into your allowance on every single trip. A large bag at 5.5 kg on a typical 23 kg fare leaves you a kilo or more less than a 4.2 kg alternative.
Compare listed weights across brands. Polycarbonate sets are usually lighter for their strength than aluminium, and well-designed ABS or blends can also be competitive at lower prices.
Divide capacity by weight for a quick efficiency score. More litres per kilo is better, as long as the shell and wheels remain sturdy.
This is especially important for women who often fly domestically with typical allowances around 15 kg.
Compare heavier and lighter sets side by side if you can. Lift each bag empty and imagine adding 18 to 20 kg of clothing; the difference you feel in your arm is exactly the difference you will feel at every check-in counter, car boot and train berth.
Mistake 4 and 5: weak wheels and wobbly handles
Wheels are the part you rely on most and the part most likely to fail. Cheap single wheels clatter, wear unevenly and jam on rough surfaces. Insist on double spinner wheels with smooth, quiet rolling, and ideally a brand that offers replacement wheels.
Trolley handles are the next weak point. Extend each handle fully and move it from side to side. A small amount of play is normal, but excessive wobble suggests thin tubing that may bend or stick over time.
Test each bag in the set, not only the display piece. Smaller bags in budget sets sometimes have cheaper hardware than the large.
Read reviews for comments on wheel and handle durability after several trips.
It also pays to roll each bag across a rough surface, such as a tiled floor with grout lines or a paved driveway, rather than a smooth showroom floor. Rough surfaces reveal noisy, wobbly or sticky wheels instantly, and Indian stations and city pavements are far closer to that test than to a polished mall.
Mistake 6: assuming the set nests
Matching sizes do not guarantee nesting. Wheels, internal frames and fixed dividers can prevent the smaller bags from fitting inside the larger ones. If storage is tight, confirm nesting in the listing or product photos, or test it as soon as the set arrives, while you can still return it.
Non-nesting sets can take up a surprising amount of space in a compact city flat. Three bags stored separately may fill a loft or wardrobe top completely.
If you love a set that does not nest, plan where the bags will live before you buy.
Some soft-sided sets compress for storage instead, which is a useful alternative.
Mistake 7: choosing a finish that scratches or dates
Glossy pale shells look stunning in photos but show scuffs from the first conveyor belt. Matte and textured finishes hide wear far better, especially on the medium and large bags that travel in the hold.
Trend-driven colours can also date quickly. A shade that feels fresh today may feel tired in three years. If you love colour, choose a rich, timeless tone such as emerald, wine or navy, or keep the shells neutral and add colour with tags and straps.
Remember that you will see the same colour across all three bags for many years. Choose one you genuinely love, not one that is simply on offer.
Consider how the colour pairs with your usual handbags and totes.
Another overlooked detail is the shell's hinge side. On well-made sets, the hinge and zip are reinforced where the bag takes most strain when opened and closed. Run your fingers along it and check that stitching is neat and even rather than loose or puckered.
Mistake 8: overlooking locks and interiors
A TSA-accepted lock is useful on routes to or through the United States. Built-in combination locks are more convenient than padlocks and cannot be lost. Make sure every bag in the set has the same lock type.
Interiors matter more than people expect. Look for compression straps on both halves, a zipped divider, a few internal pockets and a lining that can be wiped or removed for washing.
Check the zips too. Chunky, smooth zips last longer than thin ones, especially on expandable bags that carry heavy loads.
Small details like these make daily packing easier on every trip.
Similarly, avoid choosing a set purely because a celebrity or influencer carried it. Luggage that suits someone flying business class with porters may not suit a woman managing her own bags on domestic economy fares and overnight trains.
Mistake 9 and 10: skipping warranty and return checks
Warranty terms vary widely between brands and even between ranges. Some cover manufacturing defects only; others are more generous. Read the terms on the listing for each bag, register the product if the brand allows and keep the invoice safe.
Finally, check the return policy. Measure each bag at home, test nesting, roll the wheels and inspect the shells. If anything is wrong, return the set promptly rather than hoping it improves.
Brands like Samsonite, American Tourister, Delsey, Safari, VIP, Nasher Miles and Mokobara offer sets across price points. Comparing them carefully on the points above will lead you to the right one.
A few minutes of checking now saves years of frustration later.
Look at the interior from a practical angle too: imagine opening the bag on a narrow hotel luggage rack. A divider that zips fully closed keeps one half tidy while you rummage in the other, which is a small comfort you will appreciate on every trip.
Final checklist
Choose sizes you will use, with clear steps between them. Compare empty weights and litres. Test wheels and handles on every bag. Confirm nesting if storage is tight. Pick a finish and colour that last. Check locks, interiors, zips, warranty and returns. Do this, and your luggage set will serve you well for many trips.
Keep this list on your phone and run through it before checkout. It takes five minutes and saves you years with the wrong luggage.
