What is a Maheshwari saree?

A Maheshwari saree is a lightweight handloom saree from Maheshwar, a temple town on the banks of the Narmada river in the Khargone district of Madhya Pradesh. It is known for a fine, slightly sheer texture, a subtle sheen, a reversible border that can be worn on either side, and a pallu with distinctive stripes.

Today you will find three main kinds: silk-cotton (the most popular, with a silk warp and cotton weft), pure silk, and pure cotton. Maheshwar sarees are protected by a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, which links the name to the region's weavers.

History and origin

Weaving in Maheshwar goes back centuries, but the craft is most closely linked with Rani Ahilyabai Holkar, the 18th-century queen of the Holkar dynasty who made Maheshwar her capital. She invited skilled weavers to settle there, and Maheshwari sarees became prized gifts for royal guests. Many of the classic border and pallu designs are said to echo the carvings and architecture of the Maheshwar fort and ghats.

The craft was revived in the late 1970s through the Rehwa Society, a non-profit set up to support local weavers, and it remains a living handloom tradition today.

How a Maheshwari saree is made

Maheshwari sarees are traditionally woven on handlooms. In silk-cotton sarees, a silk warp gives the shine while a cotton weft keeps the fabric light and breathable. Borders are woven in contrast colours, often with zari or resham, and the reversible border (sometimes called bugdi) is a signature feature.

Classic motifs include chatai (a mat-like weave), eent (brick), heera (diamond) and small flower buttis, together with checks and stripes. The pallu typically carries three to five bold stripes in alternating colours.

Silk-cotton Maheshwaris are lighter, more breathable and easier to wear all day, which makes them ideal for office, daily wear and Indian summers. Pure silk Maheshwaris have a richer drape and sheen and are better for weddings and festivals. Pure cotton versions are the most casual and budget-friendly.

How to identify an original Maheshwari saree

Feel the weight: a genuine Maheshwari is light and slightly sheer. Check the border: it should be neatly reversible. Look at the pallu stripes and for small, even irregularities that come from hand weaving. Where offered, look for the Handloom Mark or Silk Mark, and read the seller's details and buyer reviews. Be cautious of very low prices for 'pure silk' claims.
