Meghalaya monsoon trip luggage: the answer

For a five to seven day Meghalaya trip in the monsoon, the best luggage is a fully water-resistant 50 to 60 litre duffle or travel backpack with a rain cover, plus a waterproof 20 litre daypack or dry bag. Meghalaya, home to Cherrapunji (Sohra) and Mawsynram, is among the wettest regions in the world during the monsoon, so waterproofing matters more than looks or size.

Why waterproofing is everything here

During the monsoon, roughly June to September, rainfall in parts of Meghalaya is extremely heavy, often with continuous downpours lasting hours or days. Luggage gets wet while loading into vehicles, at viewpoints, at homestays and during treks. Ordinary canvas or leather soaks through quickly, and cheap zips let water in.

Choose a duffle in TPU-coated fabric or a polycarbonate shell, with water-resistant or covered zips. Roll-top dry bags, borrowed from water sports, are excellent inner liners. Add a fitted rain cover for any backpack. Inside, pack clothes in waterproof packing cubes or zip-lock bags, especially electronics, documents and anything you want to keep dry for the flight home.

Zips are the weak point of most bags. Water-resistant zips have a rubberised or polyurethane coating that sheds water, and some bags add a storm flap over the zip. Check both before you buy. A bag with a laminated base also stays dry when set down on wet ground or a soaked car floor, which happens constantly here.

Hard-shell spinners are excellent at keeping water out, but their wheels pick up mud and their exteriors get splashed on unpaved roads. If you take one, stick to Shillong and day trips, and pack a cloth to wipe it before it goes into your hotel room.

Getting there: Guwahati, Shillong and road transfers

Most travellers fly into Guwahati in Assam and drive about three hours to Shillong, or fly into Shillong's Umroi airport where flights are available. From Shillong, day trips and overnight stays in Sohra, Dawki, Mawlynnong and the Khasi Hills are by road. Luggage usually goes in the boot or on the roof of a taxi or SUV.

Domestic economy fares typically include around 15 kg of check-in baggage and 7 kg in the cabin, though this varies. Keep within these limits, especially if you plan to buy local items like bamboo crafts, tea or turmeric.

On road trips, keep a waterproof daypack inside the vehicle with essentials, so you never have to open your main bag in the rain.

Many Meghalaya itineraries use Shillong as a base for three or four nights and add one or two nights in Sohra or Mawlynnong. Hotels in Shillong usually have road access and staff to help with bags, while village homestays in Sohra and the Khasi Hills can involve short walks on wet paths. A split system works well: leave the bigger bag in Shillong, take a 35 to 40 litre waterproof duffle or backpack for the villages, and collect the rest on your way back.

If you are combining Meghalaya with Kaziranga, Assam or Arunachal, your luggage will see even more roads and weather. Plan for a single bag you can carry comfortably for ten minutes, because at some point you will have to.

Living root bridges and trekking bags

The double-decker living root bridge at Nongriat involves a trek of around 3,000 or more steps down from Tyrna village and back up. You cannot take a suitcase; even a large duffle is a burden. Most visitors leave their main bags with their driver or hotel and trek with a 20 to 30 litre backpack.

If you are staying overnight in Nongriat, which many travellers do to enjoy the natural pools, pack a minimal overnight kit: a change of clothes, quick-dry towel, toiletries, a torch, a power bank, snacks and any medicines. A waterproof backpack with a hip belt is ideal.

Footwear matters. The steps are steep and slippery in the rain. Wear trekking shoes or sports sandals with excellent grip, and carry a pair of slippers for the homestay.

A Meghalaya packing list for women

Clothing: quick-dry trousers or leggings, three or four quick-dry tops, a light fleece or sweater for cool Shillong evenings, a good waterproof jacket with a hood, a poncho for heavy downpours and one smarter outfit for a cafe evening in Shillong's Police Bazaar or Laitumkhrah.

Footwear: waterproof trekking shoes, sports sandals and one pair of comfortable shoes for town.

Accessories: a compact umbrella, a waterproof phone pouch, a cap, a scarf and a microfibre towel.

Toiletries: insect repellent, anti-fungal powder, moisturiser, sunscreen, hand sanitiser, a small medical kit and blister plasters. Humidity and wet feet can cause skin irritation, so keep feet dry when you can.

Day bags: waterfalls, caves and Dawki

For waterfalls such as Nohkalikai, Seven Sisters and Elephant Falls, and caves like Mawsmai, a waterproof daypack or roll-top dry bag is best. At Dawki, on the clear Umngot river, boat rides are popular, so keep your phone in a waterproof pouch.

Drying and caring for your luggage during the trip

At each stop, open your bags and let them breathe. Hang damp clothes indoors, use a fan or heater if available, and keep wet items in a separate bag. Stuff shoes with newspaper overnight. Wipe down the outside of your duffle or spinner and dry zips to stop grit and rust.

After the trip, unpack immediately, clean and dry the bag fully and store it with silica gel. This prevents mildew and odours that can be hard to remove later.

A quick routine at the end of each day helps. Empty the daypack fully, shake out sand and leaves, and leave it open. Wring out and hang the rain cover. Rotate clothes so that tomorrow's outfit is dry and ready at the top of a waterproof cube, and move anything damp into the laundry bag. Five minutes each evening can save the whole bag from smelling musty by day five.

If your hotel offers a laundry or drying service, use it. Quick-dry fabrics dry overnight indoors, but heavier items like jeans or a fleece can stay damp for days in Meghalaya's humidity.

Mistakes to avoid on a Meghalaya monsoon trip

Taking leather or canvas luggage without covers is the most damaging mistake. Others include packing cotton jeans that never dry, carrying a suitcase on the root bridge trek, forgetting waterproof pouches for phones and documents, and wearing smooth-soled shoes on slippery steps.

Another is not leaving buffer time; landslides and heavy rain can slow road travel. Keep extra essentials in your daypack.
