Why a messy bun works with a saree
A messy bun for saree gives a relaxed, modern edge to a traditional drape. It keeps the neck and blouse visible, takes about ten minutes and suits almost any saree, from organza and cotton to softer silks. The key is controlled mess: a secure base with soft, deliberate texture on the surface and a couple of face-framing strands.
Messy buns are especially popular for office festivities, cocktail evenings, farewells and pujas at home. Below are eight versions with exact steps, along with fixes for thin and heavy hair.
The look also forgives imperfect hair days. If your hair is second- or third-day, slightly frizzy from humidity, or has uneven layers, a messy bun turns all of that into texture that looks deliberate. That makes it one of the most practical saree hairstyles for working women and busy festival mornings.
It also pairs well with every type of blouse, from sleeveless and halter styles to elbow-sleeve silk blouses, as long as you adjust the bun height. Higher buns suit halter and backless blouses; lower buns suit boat necks and high collars.

How to make a messy bun with a saree, step by step
Spray texturiser or dry shampoo through dry hair and rough it up with fingers. Gather hair loosely into a low ponytail without brushing, so it keeps texture. Secure with an elastic but do not pull it tight.
Twist the ponytail loosely and wrap it around the base. Pin with U-pins, pushing them inwards. Gently pull at the top of the bun and the crown for softness. Pull out two face-framing strands and curl them with a small tong.
Finish with a light spray. The bun should feel secure even though it looks undone.
If your hair is very long and heavy, split the ponytail into two sections and wrap them in opposite directions; this spreads the weight and stops the bun from sagging by evening. If your hair is layered, tuck shorter pieces into the bun with a pin and let a few escape on purpose around the nape.
The best tools are simple: a soft elastic in your hair colour, eight to ten U-pins, a few bobby pins, texturising spray and a small curling tong for tendrils. U-pins are the secret; they hold the loose shape without flattening it the way bobby pins can.
Low messy bun saree look
The low messy bun sits at the nape and looks graceful with a silk or georgette saree. It shows off the back of the blouse and keeps the pallu free. Add a flower or a decorative pin at one side for a festive touch.
It is ideal for deep-back blouses, tie-up blouses and boat necks.
Step-by-step: brush hair lightly, add texturiser, gather at the nape, twist loosely and coil, then pin with U-pins angled inwards. Leave the crown soft rather than flat; a slight lift prevents the look from appearing too casual against a formal drape.
With cotton and handloom sarees like Chanderi, Maheshwari or Jamdani, a low messy bun with a single fresh flower is understated and elegant for office or a temple visit.
Side messy bun
Place the bun behind the right ear when the pallu sits on the left shoulder. This asymmetric style looks romantic in photographs and suits round and square faces. Pair with long earrings on the open side.
Side buns work beautifully with organza and pastel sarees for day weddings.
To make a side messy bun, tie the ponytail behind the ear instead of at the centre, and let the bun sit just below the ear line. Pull a few strands from the opposite side towards the face to balance the look.
It is a lovely option for bridesmaids in matching sarees, especially when everyone wears the bun on the same side with the same flower.
Square faces in particular benefit from the softening effect of a side bun.
Messy bun with gajra
Wrap half a gajra loosely around a messy low bun so it looks soft rather than formal. White mogra suits pastels and whites, while rose petals suit pinks and reds. Pin through the thread to keep the flowers fresh.
This is a great look for pujas, Diwali and Karwa Chauth when you want tradition with a relaxed feel.
Buy a short gajra, roughly half the length you would use for a classic bun. Place it in a crescent on the side of the bun facing the camera, pinning at three points. The partial wrap keeps the messy texture visible.
If fresh flowers are not available, an artificial pearl or fabric gajra works well and can be reused for multiple festivals.
Braided messy bun
Braid the ponytail loosely before twisting it into a bun, then pull at the loops for texture. This gives more volume than a plain bun and holds longer. Add small pearl pins along the braid loops.
Braided messy buns suit heavier silks better than a plain messy bun because the texture complements zari.
You can also make a fishtail before coiling for a finer texture, or use two small braids wrapped together for a more intricate bun. Both work well for weddings where a plain messy bun may feel too casual.
For heavy Banarasi or Kanjivaram silks, keep the braid tighter and add gold-tone pins to echo the zari border.
A braided messy bun also hides second-day roots well and keeps its shape through long pujas or office celebrations.
Messy bun for thin hair
Thin hair can look flat in a messy bun, so add volume with texturising spray, light back-combing at the roots and a small bun donut placed under the ponytail. Pull at the bun more generously to make it look fuller.
A clip-in messy bun scrunchie in your shade is a quick option for very fine or short hair.
Thick hair, on the other hand, can produce a bun that is too big. Thin out the bun by pinning part of the ponytail flat underneath before wrapping the rest, or switch to a braided messy bun which compresses the volume.
Curly hair makes a gorgeous natural messy bun; skip brushing, gather curls loosely and pin, letting the curl pattern do the work.
Mistakes to avoid
A messy bun should never look unwashed or unpinned. Avoid excessive pulling that exposes the elastic, and avoid oily roots. Keep the crown slightly smooth so the style looks intentional. Too many loose strands at the front can look untidy in photos; two or three are enough.
Also avoid very high messy buns with heavy silk sarees; they look casual and clash with formal drapes.
Face shape also matters. Round faces look best with a messy bun that has a little height at the crown and a side parting. Long faces suit a lower bun with volume at the sides. Square faces benefit from soft tendrils near the jaw.
Finally, test the bun with your saree draped. A pallu pinned high on the shoulder can push against a low bun, so adjust the bun slightly higher or to the side if needed.
Another mistake is pairing a messy bun with very formal, symmetrical jewellery like a heavy maang tikka and choker; the casual hair and rigid jewellery clash. Choose softer pieces such as jhumkas, a delicate necklace or a single statement ring.
Lastly, do not leave the elastic visible. Wrap a thin strand around it or cover it with a flower or pin for a polished finish.
