Messy bun tutorial: the 3-minute method
This messy bun tutorial comes down to four steps: gather your hair into a loose pony at the height you want, twist the length, wrap it around the base without pulling tight, then secure with a scrunchie and gently tug the edges outward. The magic is in keeping the base smooth and the bun itself relaxed.
The reason so many messy buns look sloppy instead of chic is that the mess is in the wrong place. Bumps at the hairline and random loose sections near the crown look accidental. A soft, voluminous bun with a neat foundation and two deliberate face-framing strands looks styled.
Below, we go through the core method, then variations for thick, fine, layered and short hair, plus the different heights and when to wear each one.

Step 1: prep your hair for grip
Messy buns work best on second-day hair. Freshly washed silky hair slips out of the bun within an hour. If you washed today, spray a little dry shampoo or texture spray at the roots and through the lengths, then rough it up with your fingers.
If your hair is very straight and fine, a light backcomb at the crown adds a base of volume. Take a two-inch section at the top of your head, hold it up and gently comb a few strokes towards the scalp. Smooth the top layer over it.
Brush the rest of your hair back to remove tangles. You want a clean starting point, not a knotted one; the messiness comes later, on purpose.
Step 2: choose your height and gather
A high messy bun at the crown is playful and youthful, and it suits heart-shaped and oval faces, and anyone who wants to look taller. A mid-height bun at the back of the head is the most versatile everyday option. A low messy bun at the nape feels elegant and works with ethnic wear and work outfits.
Flip your head upside down for a high bun to get an even, bump-free gather. For mid and low buns, gather with your hands while looking straight ahead and smooth the sides with your palms.
Hold the gathered hair at your chosen height with one hand. Do not tie it tightly yet. If you want a fuller bun, loop the hair through the elastic only halfway on the last pass, creating a loop with the ends hanging out.
Your face shape can guide the height too. Round faces look more elongated with a high messy bun because it adds vertical height, while long faces look more balanced with a low or mid bun that does not add extra length. Square faces benefit from soft face-framing strands left out around the jaw, and heart-shaped faces suit a low messy bun at the nape that adds width near the chin.
Step 3: twist, wrap and secure
Twist the length of the pony loosely until it naturally wants to coil. Wrap it around the base of the pony in a circle. Do not wrap tightly; a little gap between coils is what gives the bun volume.
Secure the bun with a scrunchie stretched over the top, or push three or four U-pins through the outer edges into the base. U-pins hold better than bobby pins because they grip without flattening the bun.
If you used the half-loop method, simply wrap the hanging ends around the base of the loop and tuck them under the band. This is the fastest messy bun of all and great for very long hair.
Step 4: loosen and finish
Gently pinch and pull small sections around the outer edge of the bun to make it look bigger and softer. Pull from the bun itself, not the base, or the whole thing will slide down.
Pull out two thin strands near the temples and maybe a few at the nape. Curling or twisting these pieces with your finger adds polish. Keep the hairline smooth so the mess looks intentional.
Finish with a light mist of flexible hairspray or a dab of serum on any frizz. That is the full look, done in about three minutes once you have practised it twice.
A messy bun can also be dressed up. Tuck a few small pearl pins around one side, wrap a thin silk scarf around the base, or slide in a slim gold hair pin for an evening look. With a kurta set, a low messy bun with a small gajra tucked at the side looks lovely for a casual puja or family lunch, without the formality of a structured festive updo.
Messy bun for thick and long hair
Thick hair often makes a bun too heavy, so it droops or gives you a headache. Split the hair into two halves, twist each separately and wrap them around the same base, pinning each half. This spreads the weight and looks fuller.
For very long hair, consider braiding the pony first and then coiling the braid. A braided messy bun holds far better and has a lovely textured look.
Use a large scrunchie or a coil tie that grips without snapping. Thin elastics are not strong enough for heavy hair.
Messy bun for fine, layered and short hair
Fine hair needs more volume, so teasing and texture spray are key. A doughnut or a bun filler in your hair colour, hidden under the coiled hair, makes a fine messy bun look twice as thick.
Layered hair tends to have short pieces popping out. Embrace a few, but pin the shortest layers near the nape with small bobby pins so the bun does not look like it is falling apart.
Shoulder-length and short hair can do a half-up messy bun. Take only the top section from temple to temple and make a small bun at the crown. The rest stays loose. This mini top knot works with lobs and long bobs.
Practice is genuinely the secret ingredient. The first messy bun often looks too neat or too chaotic. By the third or fourth attempt your hands learn how loosely to twist, how far to pull the edges and where to place the pins. Try it on a weekend, take a quick photo of the back with your phone, and adjust. Within a week it will be your fastest go-to hairstyle.
Common messy bun mistakes and quick fixes
If your bun keeps sliding down, the elastic at the base is too loose or your hair is too slippery. Tie the base firmly, even if the bun on top is loose, and add a bit of texture spray. Anchor two U-pins from the bun into the hair at the base so the bun cannot travel.
If the bun looks small and tight, you wrapped the hair too firmly around the base. Unwrap, twist more loosely and leave gaps between coils, then pancake the edges by pulling them outward gently. A bun should look about twice the size of your fist on medium-thick hair.
If the whole look reads untidy rather than effortless, the problem is usually the hairline. Smooth the sides with a little serum or a toothbrush sprayed with hairspray, and keep only two deliberate strands loose at the front. Random pieces sticking out from the crown never look intentional.
When to wear which messy bun
The high messy bun is perfect for college, weekend errands, the gym and home. Pair it with an oversized T-shirt, jeans and sneakers for a classic casual look.
The low messy bun is your elegant everyday option. It suits office kurtas, flowy dresses and evening dinners, especially with a few soft face-framing strands and gold hoops.
The half-up messy bun is great for open-hair lovers and for days with oily roots. It looks fresh with co-ord sets and crop tops.
