Multi-city trip luggage: the answer up front
The best multi-city trip luggage is light enough to carry up stairs, small enough for regional trains and budget flights, and organised so you can repack in ten minutes. For most women, that means a 55 to 65 cm lightweight suitcase or a soft carry-on, a personal item that holds your essentials, and packing cubes that keep each category in its place.
Multi-city itineraries are the dream of many Indian travellers: Paris, Amsterdam and Prague in ten days; Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Bali in a week; or a Golden Triangle plus Varanasi circuit at home. Each move means packing, transport, check-in and unpacking, so luggage efficiency compounds.
The more stops you plan, the more each extra kilogram costs you in time and energy.
A useful rule of thumb is to imagine carrying your bag up three flights of stairs at the end of a long day. If that thought fills you with dread, the bag is too heavy for a multi-city trip. Pack so you can comfortably lift everything alone, even if you are travelling with a partner who might help.

The two-bag system for many cities
Use one main bag and one personal item, nothing more. The main bag holds clothes and shoes; the personal item holds documents, electronics, medicines, toiletries and a day's outfit. Never add a third loose bag; it is easy to forget on trains and impossible to manage with a coffee in your hand.
If you need more space, choose a medium suitcase and keep the personal item as your day bag. If you want maximum speed, go carry-on only with a 55 cm bag. Both work; three or four pieces do not.
A foldable duffle at the bottom of the main bag covers shopping, which tends to grow over a multi-city trip.
Couples can make this system even more efficient by sharing the shopping duffle and spreading toiletries and chargers between their two personal items. Each person still carries just one main bag and one personal item. Families with children can give each child a small wheeled cabin bag of their own, which teaches them responsibility and keeps the adults' hands free for tickets and passports.
Budget airline and regional train rules
Multi-city trips often include budget flights between cities. In Europe and Southeast Asia, low-cost carriers may include only a small under-seat personal item in the basic fare, with larger cabin bags and checked bags costing extra. Dimensions and weight limits vary considerably, so check each ticket and pay for bags online in advance, which is usually cheaper than at the airport.
Regional trains rarely have weight limits but have limited rack space. A 55 cm cabin bag fits overhead racks; larger suitcases go into luggage stacks at carriage ends. In Indian trains, slim bags fit under berths. Coaches and buses between cities usually allow one large bag in the hold.
Keep a list of each leg's baggage allowance in your phone notes.
Choosing a lightweight suitcase
Weight is the priority. Look for polypropylene or lightweight polycarbonate shells, or soft-sided ballistic nylon. A 55 cm bag weighing under 2.5 kg and a 65 cm bag under 3.5 kg give you more room for clothes within limits. Double spinner wheels help in airports; sturdy two-wheel trolleys handle cobbles better.
A front pocket on a soft bag or a front-opening lid on a hard shell lets you grab a jacket or laptop without opening the whole bag at a station. A built-in TSA lock helps if your itinerary includes the US. Bright colours or strap identifiers help in crowded baggage halls.
Brands like Mokobara, Nasher Miles, American Tourister, Samsonite and Delsey offer lightweight models in these sizes.
Hard or soft is a personal choice on multi-city trips. Hard shells protect contents when bags are thrown into the hold of a budget flight or stacked in a train luggage area, and they are easier to wipe clean. Soft bags compress to meet strict sizers at the gate and offer quick-access pockets. If most of your legs are trains and buses, soft often wins; if most are flights, a light hard shell is a strong choice.
Packing cubes and the ten-minute repack
Packing cubes are the heart of multi-city travel. One cube for tops, one for bottoms and dresses, one for innerwear and sleepwear, plus a shoe bag and a toiletry case. When you arrive, cubes go straight into drawers or stay in the open suitcase. When you leave, they go back in the same order.
Keep a clean-and-dirty system: a laundry bag for worn clothes, and a rule that clean clothes always stay in cubes. Pack the next day's outfit on top. With practice, repacking becomes a ten-minute routine rather than a stressful hour.
A small pouch for chargers and adapters stays in the personal item so you never leave a cable behind.
Toiletries need their own discipline. Keep a clear, security-ready liquids bag with containers of 100 ml or less, as most airports typically require, so you can pull it out in seconds at each flight. Solid alternatives such as shampoo bars, stick sunscreen and solid perfume reduce the liquids you carry and avoid leaks on bumpy bus or train legs.
A capsule wardrobe for city-hopping
Choose a palette that suits every city on your list, such as black, white and denim with a red accent, or camel, cream and navy. Pack five tops, three bottoms, two dresses, a light jacket or blazer, a knit layer and comfortable walking shoes plus one dressier pair.
Layering pieces handle changing weather between cities, which can be significant: a sunny Barcelona followed by a cool Amsterdam, for example. Accessories such as scarves, sunglasses and a watch refresh outfits without adding weight.
Co-ord sets are particularly useful because they can be worn together or split into separate pieces.
Shoes deserve extra thought because multi-city trips involve a lot of walking. A cushioned pair of sneakers broken in before the trip is non-negotiable; blisters on day two can spoil the rest of the itinerary. Add loafers or ballet flats for dinners and museums, and only take heels if you have a specific occasion planned.
Night-time in some European and East Asian cities can be cool even in summer, so a light trench or denim jacket earns its place in the main bag.
Daily movement tips
Store main luggage at the hotel on check-out days and explore with only your personal item before the evening train. Many train stations in Europe and Asia have lockers or left-luggage offices. Use taxis or ride-hailing for hotel transfers when lifting heavy bags up metro stairs is impractical.
Plan routes with fewer luggage-heavy connections. A direct train is easier than three metro changes with a suitcase. Stay near main stations if you are moving often.
Book hotels with lifts if you are carrying a heavier suitcase; old European buildings often have narrow stairs only.
Many Indian travellers plan city-hopping trips around Schengen visas, which require hotel bookings and travel insurance. Keep copies of these documents in your personal item, along with printed train and flight tickets. Immigration officers may ask about your onward travel, and having everything in one folder saves stress at borders or airport desks.
Use luggage tags with your phone number and email rather than your home address, which is more useful if a bag goes missing abroad.
Multi-city luggage mistakes
Overpacking is the biggest mistake, followed by carrying too many bags, ignoring budget airline fees, choosing heavy luggage and not using packing cubes. Others include packing liquids in the main bag when you need them at security, and buying bulky souvenirs early in the trip.
Another trap is assuming each airline uses the same size rules. A bag that passes on one flight may be too big on the next. Measure your bag and keep it compact.
Finally, do not leave check-out packing until the last minute; it is when chargers and passports are forgotten.
Lastly, beware the creeping extra bag. A tote from a museum shop, a box of macarons and a paper bag of souvenirs become three extra items within days. Consolidate purchases into your foldable duffle every evening, so you leave each hotel with exactly the bags you arrived with.
Travel light across cities
A lightweight main bag, a smart personal item and a cube system make multi-city travel smooth and enjoyable.
