Northern lights trip packing list: the essentials
A northern lights trip packing list must cover extreme cold: merino or synthetic base layers, a fleece or wool mid-layer, an insulated waterproof parka and trousers, insulated boots, thick socks, mittens over liner gloves, a balaclava or neck gaiter and a warm hat. Pack it in a medium polycarbonate spinner or a wheeled duffle, and keep camera gear, batteries and one full warm outfit in your cabin bag.
Aurora trips to Finnish Lapland, Tromsø in Norway, Abisko in Sweden, Iceland and northern Canada usually take place between September and March, with the darkest and coldest months from December to February. Temperatures can fall well below minus 20 degrees in inland Lapland, while coastal Norway and Iceland are milder but windy and wet.
For Indian travellers used to mild winters, this is the coldest trip most will ever take. Luggage and packing make a big difference to comfort.
The aurora is never guaranteed, so most travellers plan at least three or four nights in the Arctic to improve their chances. That means a week-long trip with several nights spent outside, waiting in the cold. Your luggage needs to hold a complete Arctic wardrobe and still be manageable on snowy streets, buses and small regional planes.

Layering for Arctic cold
Think in three layers. Base layers in merino wool or synthetic fabric keep sweat away from your skin; avoid cotton, which stays damp and cold. Mid-layers in fleece or wool trap warmth. The outer layer, a long insulated parka and insulated snow trousers, blocks wind and snow.
Pack two or three base layer sets, two mid-layers and one outer set. Aurora hunting means standing still outside at night for hours, which is much colder than skiing or walking. Many tour operators lend thermal overalls and boots; check what is included before you pack your own.
A packable down jacket is a useful extra layer under the parka on the coldest nights.
Wool socks deserve special attention. Pack at least one pair per day, because damp socks lose their warmth quickly and cold feet will end an aurora night faster than anything else. Merino or wool-blend hiking socks are ideal. Keep two spare pairs in your day bag on long nights out, and change if your feet feel damp.
Feet, hands and head
Cold feet ruin aurora nights. Insulated waterproof boots rated for low temperatures, worn with thick wool socks over thin liner socks, are essential. Make sure boots are not too tight; you need room for air and thick socks. Pack chemical toe warmers if you feel the cold.
Mittens are warmer than gloves. Wear thin touchscreen liner gloves underneath so you can use your phone or camera briefly. A balaclava or neck gaiter protects your face from wind chill, and a warm hat that covers your ears is a must.
Hand warmers, lip balm and a rich moisturiser protect skin from dry, freezing air.
Avoid tight jewellery and watches on cold nights; metal against the skin feels very cold, and rings can become uncomfortable as hands swell and shrink with temperature changes. A simple watch with a leather or fabric strap worn over a base layer is more practical.
Luggage that copes with deep cold
Polycarbonate stays more flexible than ABS in deep cold, making it the better shell for Arctic trips. Large wheels or a wheeled duffle with carry handles handle snowy paths and icy pavements. Small spinner wheels clog and freeze in snow, so be ready to carry the bag.
Arctic winter clothes are bulky. A 70 to 75 cm case or a 90 litre duffle is often needed, unless your tour provides outer gear. Wear your bulkiest layers on the flight to save space.
Choose a dark colour that hides slush and road grime, and add a bright strap so you can spot it on snowy airport carts.
Regional flights to Rovaniemi, Ivalo, Kittilä, Tromsø or Abisko may use smaller aircraft with tighter baggage limits than long-haul flights from India. Check each flight's allowance. If you are close to the limit, wear your heaviest boots and parka on the plane and keep dense items like tripods in your checked bag.
Camera and electronics
Cold drains batteries fast. Carry spare camera batteries and a power bank in an inner pocket close to your body. A tripod is essential for aurora photography; a compact travel tripod fits in a duffle or along the handle side of a case.
When coming back inside, put your camera in a sealed bag before entering a warm room to prevent condensation on the lens and inside the body. Let it warm up slowly.
Keep cameras, lenses and power banks in your cabin luggage; power banks typically must travel in the cabin.
A thermos flask is one of the most useful things you can pack. A hot drink on a freezing night lifts spirits and helps you stay outside longer. Choose a compact, leak-proof one that fits the side pocket of your day bag, and fill it at your hotel before setting out.
Cabin bag essentials
Your cabin bag should carry one full set of warm layers, hat, mittens, socks, medicines, chargers, power banks and camera gear. If checked luggage is delayed in Helsinki or Oslo, you can still go out on your first night. Many Indian travellers connect via Middle Eastern or European hubs, where delays in winter are common.
A structured backpack with a laptop sleeve doubles as a day bag for city exploring.
Pack skincare in travel sizes in a clear bag.
Indoor rooms in the Arctic are very warm, often well above 20 degrees, so pack comfortable indoor clothes, such as a light top and lounge trousers. Having to wear thermals indoors in an overheated room is surprisingly uncomfortable. A pair of slippers or thick house socks is also welcome on cold floors in cabins and glass igloos.
Day bag on aurora nights
On aurora tours, you need a small backpack or a sling under your parka for spare batteries, hand warmers, a flask of hot drink, snacks and a head torch with a red-light setting, which preserves night vision.
Keep your phone in an inner pocket. Avoid leather bags, which stiffen in deep cold.
Sunglasses help on bright snowy days if your trip includes daytime activities.
A small foam sit pad is a surprisingly useful extra for aurora nights. Sitting on snow or a frozen bench drains body heat quickly, and a light foam pad weighs almost nothing. Some tours provide reindeer skins or benches by a fire, but a pad in your day bag means you can sit comfortably anywhere while you wait for the sky to light up.
Mistakes Indian travellers make
Underestimating the cold is the biggest mistake. A Delhi winter jacket is not enough for Lapland. Another is wearing cotton thermals, which hold sweat. Others forget mittens, a balaclava or proper boots.
Overpacking is also common. Check what your tour provides; many supply overalls, boots and mittens, which saves space.
Do not forget to check daylight hours; in December, there may be only a few hours of light.
Another mistake is not protecting skin. Freezing wind and dry air chap lips and cheeks quickly, and some travellers find their skin cracks after a few days. Pack a rich barrier cream, a lip balm and a hand cream, and apply them before you go out, not only after.
Choosing luggage for an Arctic trip
A polycarbonate spinner or wheeled duffle from brands such as Samsonite, American Tourister or Delsey, plus a backpack, works well. Prices for medium and large cases start from around ₹6,000, with premium options offering better wheels and warranties.
Pack smart, layer well and keep camera gear warm.
With the right preparation, your aurora trip will be about dancing green skies rather than cold toes. Explore our edit.
Pick a bag with large zip pulls you can grip in mittens, and test the lock in a cold room before you leave, because small combination dials can stiffen in sub-zero temperatures.
