The short answer
For NRI trips to India, the best suitcase setup is usually two large or large-plus-medium check-in bags of about 69 to 76 cm, chosen to match a typical two-piece allowance, plus a cabin trolley and a tote. Prioritise low empty weight, tough polycarbonate shells and excellent wheels, because these bags carry gifts and dense items in both directions over long-haul routes.
Trips home are unlike any other journey. On the way to India, bags are full of chocolates, cosmetics, clothes and gadgets for family. On the way back, they are full of spices, sweets, festive outfits and homemade treats. Few trips put suitcases under so much weight, in both directions.
That makes choosing the right size and planning weight more important than usual.
The sections below cover sizes, allowances, packing and features.
There is also the matter of long stays. Many NRIs spend three to six weeks in India, attending weddings, festivals or family events, often moving between cities such as Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad and Chennai. Luggage that is easy to handle, store at relatives' homes and repack quickly makes a long visit far more comfortable.

Sizes that suit NRI travel
Many NRIs fly to India from the Gulf, the UK, North America, Singapore and Australia. Fares on these routes often allow two pieces of about 23 kg each, though some allow a single heavier bag or 30 kg or more on certain routes and fares. Always check your ticket.
For two-piece fares, a pair of 69 to 75 cm suitcases is ideal. A 69 cm bag reaches about 23 kg with dense packing; a 75 cm bag reaches 23 kg with bulkier items. Many families take one of each.
For single-bag fares, a 75 cm large is usually best.
Avoid extra-large bags that may exceed typical dimension limits of around 158 cm combined and that become impossible to lift once packed with sweets and gifts.
If you fly with a Gulf carrier on a connecting route, check whether the allowance on your specific fare is weight-based or piece-based, because that determines whether one heavy bag or two balanced bags is the better strategy. Fares booked through travel agents and directly with airlines can differ, so always read the ticket itself.
Families travelling together should plan bags as a group. Two parents and two children on a two-piece fare might have up to eight check-in pieces available, but few families need that many. Taking four well-packed bags and leaving the rest of the allowance unused for the return leg gives valuable flexibility when relatives send you home with gifts.
Planning weight both ways
Gifts are dense. Boxes of chocolates, bottles of perfume, cosmetics, small appliances and books add up quickly. Weigh each bag as you pack, and stop at about 22 kg for a 23 kg allowance to leave a buffer.
On the return journey, Indian sweets, pickles, spices and festive clothing are just as heavy. Plan your outbound packing so that one bag can be repacked efficiently for the return, and carry a foldable duffle for extra items if your fare allows an additional piece.
Check customs rules for your destination carefully. Many countries restrict meat, dairy, fresh produce and some seeds. Packaged, sealed foods are generally safer, but rules vary.
Use a luggage scale at both ends. Relatives' bathroom scales are not always accurate.
Plan the return before you leave abroad. Think about what you expect to bring back, such as new clothes stitched for a wedding, jewellery boxes, spices for the year and gifts for friends abroad, and leave enough empty space and weight on the outbound trip to accommodate them.
Packing gifts smartly
Pack fragile gifts in the centre of the bag, surrounded by clothing. Keep liquids, such as perfumes and lotions, in zip pouches to prevent leaks.
Wrap gifts after arrival rather than before. Wrapping adds weight and may be opened by security anyway.
Label gift bags for each relative so distribution is easy and quick.
Spread gifts across both bags to keep weights balanced and avoid one overweight bag.
Gadgets deserve care too. Phones, tablets and small electronics bought as gifts are best carried in the cabin bag, in their original boxes if possible, to avoid damage and to keep them secure. Lithium batteries also often have specific rules for checked luggage, so check your airline's guidance.
Packing the return leg
Indian clothing, especially sarees, lehengas and heavily embroidered kurtas, is bulky and sometimes heavy. Fold them carefully with tissue and place them flat on top.
Spices and pickles should be sealed in airtight containers and double-bagged to stop smells and leaks spreading to clothes.
Sweets are often best carried in their original sealed boxes, wrapped in a plastic bag. Check customs rules at your destination for any restrictions.
Keep a light jacket or shawl in your cabin bag for the cold arrival back abroad.
Many NRIs also bring back clothing from tailors and boutiques in India. Ask for garments to be folded flat with tissue, and pack them in a garment folder or large cube on top of the suitcase so they arrive crisp and ready to wear for events abroad.
Features that survive NRI trips
Polycarbonate shells withstand rough handling on long-haul routes better than thin ABS. Look for reinforced corners and strong wheel housings.
Double spinner wheels with smooth bearings make pushing two heavy bags through airports easier. A sturdy aluminium trolley is essential for bags near 23 kg.
TSA-accepted locks matter for flights to or through the United States.
Strong top, side and bottom handles help relatives lift the bags into cars at the airport.
Colour is practical as well. On crowded arrival carousels in Delhi, Mumbai or Hyderabad, a bright suitcase or a distinctive strap helps you find your bags quickly after a long flight, especially if you are tired and managing children.
Since NRI bags often sit in relatives' homes for weeks during humid seasons, look for linings that can be wiped clean and bags with good ventilation when opened. Leave them open for a few hours on arrival to air out.
Cabin bags and personal items
Use your cabin bag for valuables, jewellery, medicines, documents, electronics and a change of clothes. These should never go in checked bags.
Carry a tote or handbag for passports, phone, boarding passes and small gifts that are fragile or valuable.
Check cabin weight limits, often around 7 kg on many carriers, and personal item size rules.
A cabin trolley with a front pocket makes security checks smoother.
For long-haul flights of eight to sixteen hours, add comfort items to the cabin bag: a shawl, compression socks, lip balm, a small moisturiser and an eye mask. Arriving refreshed helps you enjoy those first hours with family.
Making the trip easier
Mark your bags with distinctive tags or straps; carousels at Indian airports can be crowded with similar black suitcases.
Photograph your bags and keep a list of contents for any delayed baggage claim.
If you are visiting several cities, consider leaving one bag with family and travelling with the other.
Store your bags clean and dry between trips, with silica gel sachets inside.
If your trip includes domestic flights within India, remember that domestic economy allowances are often lower, typically around 15 kg. Plan to leave one large bag at your base city and travel onward with a medium or cabin bag.
Finally, keep some space for the extras relatives insist you take back: a jar of homemade achaar, a box of laddoos or a new saree. These small acts of love deserve a place in your suitcase, so plan for them.
Final word
For NRI trips to India, choose a pair of durable, lightweight check-in suitcases sized to your allowance, plus a cabin bag and tote. Plan weight carefully on both legs, pack gifts and food smartly and check customs rules. The right luggage makes the journey home as joyful as the arrival.
Invest once in two good bags, look after them between visits, and every homecoming starts the moment you see them glide off the carousel.
