NRI wedding trip to India: luggage in short
For an NRI wedding trip to India, pack light on the way in and plan for heavy luggage on the way out. Bring two large polycarbonate suitcases within your airline's per-piece weight limit, fill them with gifts and essentials for the wedding, and leave space for the outfits, jewellery and shopping you will carry back. Keep valuables and the first function's outfit in your cabin bag.
Whether you live in Dubai, London, Toronto, Sydney or the United States, flying home for a family wedding is a big logistical exercise. You may bring gifts for relatives, buy your wedding wardrobe in India, attend multiple functions and then fly back with heavy silks, jewellery and sweets.
This guide covers baggage allowances, choosing the right luggage, packing both directions and staying on the right side of customs.

Understand your baggage allowance
International allowances vary widely by airline, route and fare class. Many full-service carriers on routes to India typically use a piece concept, such as two checked bags of up to about 23 kg each in economy, while others use a total weight allowance. Some fares include more for travel to and from India. Always check your exact ticket.
Each piece usually has a size limit as well as a weight limit. Very large suitcases may exceed size limits even if they are within weight. A 75 to 79 cm case is generally within typical size limits, but confirm with your airline.
If your journey includes a domestic Indian flight to a wedding city, that leg may have a lower allowance unless it is on the same ticket. Check this carefully to avoid excess baggage charges.
Business or premium economy fares usually include higher allowances, which can be worth considering for a heavy return trip. Compare the extra fare against pre-booked excess baggage before deciding. Frequent flyer status with some airlines also adds baggage benefits, so check your membership tier before paying for extra weight.
Best luggage for the trip
Two large 75 to 79 cm polycarbonate spinners are the workhorse for NRI wedding travel. Choose lightweight shells, ideally around 4 to 5 kg empty, to maximise packing weight. Look for sturdy double wheels, a strong telescopic handle, recessed TSA locks and zipped dividers.
Add a 55 cm cabin trolley for valuables, medicines, a change of clothes and the first function outfit. A personal item like a tote or backpack holds documents, electronics and jewellery.
Many NRIs also bring a foldable duffle to use as an extra bag on the way back, either as a third checked piece if allowed or for domestic travel within India.
Within India, porters and luggage trolleys are available at most major airports and railway stations, but family homes often have stairs and no lift. Two medium-large cases may be easier to manage than one very large one when you are moving between relatives' homes in different cities.
Packing for the inbound flight
On the way to India, you might carry gifts for relatives, such as chocolates, cosmetics, perfumes, electronics and clothes. Pack these carefully and keep receipts for high-value electronics in case of customs questions. Check Indian customs duty-free allowances for returning residents and visitors.
If you already own outfits for the wedding, pack them in cotton covers in a hard-shell case, with tissue between embellished sections. Many NRIs buy outfits in India, so the inbound suitcase may be half-empty on purpose.
Bring adaptors, chargers and any medicines you need, along with copies of prescriptions.
Plan the inbound bags around what is hard to find in India and what relatives have asked for. A common approach is to fill one suitcase entirely with gifts and the other with your own clothes. Once gifts are handed over, the gift suitcase becomes your empty bag for wedding shopping and outfits on the way back, which neatly solves the return-weight problem.
Packing wedding shopping for the return flight
The return journey is usually the heaviest. Silk sarees, lehengas, sherwanis, juttis, sweets, spices and household gifts add up quickly. Fold silk outfits flat with tissue between zari, wrap them in muslin covers and lay them in a hard-shell suitcase with zipped dividers.
Weigh bags carefully and spread weight evenly across them. Heavy items like shoes and sweets can go in the cabin bag if within limits. Check destination country rules for food items; some countries restrict spices, sweets with dairy, seeds or meat products.
Consider shipping heavy items or buying extra baggage in advance, which is usually cheaper than paying at the airport.
Sweets and namkeen travel best in sealed tins or vacuum-packed boxes from reputable shops. Wrap them in a plastic bag inside the suitcase so any leakage does not reach silk, and pack them in the centre of the case, cushioned by clothes, rather than against the shell.
Jewellery and customs
If you are carrying gold or diamond jewellery from abroad to India, or taking jewellery bought in India back abroad, check customs rules in both countries. India has duty-free limits for jewellery brought in by travellers, which vary by passenger category and duration abroad, so check official sources before you fly.
Keep purchase receipts and valuation certificates, and declare jewellery where required. Carry all jewellery in your cabin bag or on your person, never in checked luggage.
When flying out of India with valuable jewellery bought there, keep invoices and check your destination country's declaration and duty rules.
Climate and outfits for wedding season in India
Many Indian weddings take place between October and March, when much of the country is cooler. North Indian cities like Delhi, Jaipur and Lucknow can be chilly at night in December and January, so pack a warm shawl, a jacket or a velvet blazer to wear over festive outfits. South Indian and coastal cities stay warm and humid, so lighter fabrics and breathable layers work better.
If you are attending functions in more than one city, plan for both climates. NRIs travelling from cold countries may find even a Delhi winter mild during the day, while those from the Gulf may feel the evening chill. Layers solve both problems.
Bring comfortable walking shoes for markets and sightseeing, and a mix of Indian and western casual wear for family visits, which are often a large part of an NRI wedding trip.
Travel insurance that covers baggage delay and loss is worth considering for long-haul wedding trips. Keep a list of what is packed in each bag and photographs of key items, so any claim is straightforward if a suitcase goes missing on a connecting flight.
If outfits need to be stitched, give the tailor your measurements as soon as you land and schedule a trial a few days later. Leave at least a week for alterations during peak wedding season, when tailors in big cities are busy.
NRI bride and groom luggage tips
If you are the NRI bride, you may be buying your bridal lehenga, trousseau and jewellery in India and flying back with them. Plan for this from the start. Bring an empty large suitcase or buy one in India, and consider a foldable garment bag for the bridal outfit to carry in the cabin on the return flight.
Keep a list of everything you buy, with receipts, for customs declarations in your country of residence. High-value items like jewellery and designer outfits may attract duty, and some countries require declaration above certain values. Check the rules for your destination well before the wedding.
If your spouse lives in a different country, coordinate luggage so that wedding gifts, documents and keepsakes end up in the right place. A clear packing list for each suitcase avoids confusion after the wedding.
Making the most of the trip
Plan shopping early in the trip so tailoring and alterations are complete before the wedding. Many families visit markets in Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Kolkata or Chennai for outfits and jewellery.
Pack a small travel steamer, or ask the hotel or family home about pressing services, since outfits crease in long-haul luggage. Carry a basic sewing kit for last-minute fixes.
Leave buffer days between the wedding and your return flight to rest, pack properly and recover from late nights before a long-haul journey.
