Oud in Indian perfumery: an overview
Oud in Indian perfumery refers to the dark, resinous, intensely aromatic oil distilled from infected agarwood, with Assam and the wider North-East historically among the most famous sources. Indian oud oils are known for a deep, animalic, barnyard-like and smoky character that many connoisseurs consider among the most powerful in the world.
The word oud comes from Arabic, and India has long supplied agarwood and oud oil to the Middle East, where oud is central to perfume culture. In India itself, agarwood, known as agar, has a long history in incense, medicine and attars.
Understanding Indian oud helps you appreciate why oud perfumes vary so much, why real oud is costly, and how to choose between traditional oud oils and modern oud-themed perfumes.
In Indian markets, the word oud is also used freely on inexpensive sprays and deodorants, which can be confusing. These products usually rely on synthetic oud accords rather than real agarwood oil. They can still be enjoyable, but they are very different from a traditionally distilled Assam oud, and the price difference reflects that.

What oud actually is
Oud forms when agarwood trees, of the Aquilaria genus, are infected by a mould or damaged. In response, the tree produces a dark, fragrant resin within its wood. This resin-soaked wood is what perfumers and incense makers prize.
Healthy agarwood is pale and almost odourless. Only the infected portions become fragrant, and natural infection is unpredictable. That rarity is one reason oud has been so valuable for centuries.
Today, many agarwood trees are cultivated, and infection is often induced artificially. Wild agarwood is protected under international trade rules, so legitimate sellers increasingly source from plantations.
The resinous wood is sold in chips for burning, and it is distilled to produce oud oil, sometimes called dehn al oud in Arabic markets.
Grades of agarwood are judged by resin content, density and aroma. The heaviest, most resinous pieces, which may even sink in water, are the most valued, and they are often sold for burning rather than distillation.
How Indian oud oil is made
To make oud oil, resinous agarwood is chipped or ground, soaked in water for an extended period, sometimes allowing fermentation, and then distilled. The process can take days, and the yield is very small.
Fermentation and distillation methods strongly affect the scent. Longer fermentation often produces a more animalic, funky character, typical of many traditional Indian ouds.
The finished oil may be aged to soften its edges. Aged oud often becomes smoother and more complex, which is why aged oils command higher prices.
Because the process is slow and yields are tiny, pure oud oil is among the most expensive fragrant materials in the world. A small vial can cost more than many designer perfumes.
Small differences in soaking time, still size and distillation length give each producer a distinct style, which is why oud collectors often talk about the distiller as much as the region.
What Indian oud smells like
Traditional Indian oud, especially Assam-style, is often described as animalic, leathery, smoky and earthy, sometimes with a barnyard or fermented note. It can be challenging at first but becomes deeply addictive for many.
Over hours, the harsher notes fade into a warm, woody, slightly sweet and resinous base. Some ouds reveal honeyed or fruity facets as they dry down.
This is very different from many oud perfumes sold by Western and designer brands, which often use synthetic oud accords that are cleaner, smoother and woodier, with little of the animalic depth.
Neither is wrong, but if you buy a pure Indian oud oil expecting a smooth designer oud perfume, you may be surprised.
Many people describe their first encounter with real Indian oud as shocking and then unforgettable. Give it at least an hour on skin before you decide whether you love it.
Indian oud vs Arabic-style oud perfumes
In Arabic perfumery, oud is often blended with rose, saffron, amber and musk to create rich, luxurious compositions. Many Arabic houses use Indian, Cambodian or other Asian ouds as ingredients.
Indian oud oil, by contrast, is often worn on its own or in simple combinations. Its raw character is appreciated by purists.
Arabic-style oud perfumes, sprays or oils, are generally more approachable for beginners. They balance oud's intensity with sweetness and florals.
If you are new to oud, starting with a rose-oud or saffron-oud blend can help you get used to the note before trying pure Indian oud oil.
Some Arabic houses also age their blends, and others combine several ouds from different regions to build a more layered profile.
How to wear oud
Use very small amounts. A tiny dab on wrists and behind the ears is enough. Oud is powerful and long-lasting, and overapplication can be overwhelming.
Oud is best in cooler weather and evenings. It suits winter weddings, Eid celebrations and formal dinners. In hot, humid weather, keep it minimal or choose a lighter oud blend.
For women, pairing oud with rose attar or a floral perfume creates a balanced, elegant scent. Oud with sandalwood is softer and creamier.
Oud also works on fabric. A touch on a winter shawl can last for days. Be careful with light fabrics, as dark oud oil can stain.
Oud is also traditionally worn on the beard and clothing in the Gulf, but for most Indian women, pulse points and a shawl edge are the most practical spots.
If you are wearing oud for the first time to a family event, test it at home a day earlier to judge how strong it becomes on your skin and in your clothes.
Buying oud wisely
Real oud oil is costly. Be extremely cautious with cheap products labelled pure oud. Many are synthetic oud accords or heavily diluted blends.
Buy from reputable houses with transparent sourcing. Ask whether the oil is pure, blended or synthetic, and where the agarwood was sourced.
Request samples. Pure oud varies greatly, and you need to test on skin to know whether you like a particular style.
Check return policies, which typically vary by seller. For high-value purchases, prefer sellers with long track records and clear descriptions.
A sensible first step is to buy a small vial, often a fraction of a tola, rather than a large quantity. Wear it over several days, in different weather, and notice how your reaction changes. Many people find their opinion of a particular oud shifts after a week of wearing it.
Oud in Indian ritual and daily life
Long before oud became a buzzword on perfume counters, agarwood was part of Indian ritual life. Its chips were burned as incense in homes and places of worship, and the smoke was used to scent clothes and hair, much as bakhoor is used in the Gulf today. Some traditional attar blends also include agarwood for depth.
In parts of North-East India, agarwood cultivation is a livelihood for many families, and the trees are sometimes grown in homestead gardens as a long-term investment. The knowledge of how to grade, distil and age oud has been built up locally over generations.
Oud also has a place in traditional medicine systems in South and South-East Asia, though those uses are separate from its role in perfume. For fragrance lovers, the important point is that oud is not an imported fashion in India; it is a material with deep local roots.
Knowing this history adds meaning to wearing oud at Indian celebrations, from Eid gatherings to winter weddings, where its smoky richness feels both regal and familiar.
If you love the note but cannot justify the cost of pure oud oil, well-made oud blends and oud-rose attars offer the character at a fraction of the price.
Sustainability and the future of Indian oud
Overharvesting has made wild agarwood scarce. Cultivation programmes in Assam and elsewhere aim to provide a sustainable supply, using induced infection on plantation trees.
Choosing legally sourced, plantation-grown oud supports sustainable practices and helps protect wild trees.
Indian oud remains a treasured part of the country's perfume heritage, and growing global interest is bringing new attention to North-East India's agarwood growers.
For fragrance lovers, learning about oud deepens appreciation for one of perfumery's most extraordinary materials.
