How to pack fragile items in checked luggage
To pack fragile items in checked luggage, use a sturdy hard-shell suitcase, wrap each item individually in clothing or bubble wrap, place breakables in the centre of the case away from the shell, wheels and handle, and fill every gap so nothing can shift. Seal liquids in zip bags. Keep anything precious or irreplaceable in your cabin bag, because airlines typically limit liability for fragile items in checked baggage.
Indian travellers carry more fragile cargo than most: boxes of mithai for relatives in London, jars of mango pickle for a sibling in Toronto, glass bottles of hair oil, blue pottery from Jaipur, a Kashmiri papier-mache box, perfume, and wrapped wedding gifts. Most of it arrives perfectly well when packed with a little method.
This guide covers how to choose the right suitcase, how to cushion different items, food and customs considerations, and what should never go in the hold.
The goal is not perfection; it is reducing risk. Every layer of protection you add, from the choice of case to the way you fill gaps, lowers the chance of a broken jar or a chipped bowl spoiling the joy of giving.

Start with the right suitcase
A hard-shell case is the single biggest factor in protecting fragile items. Polycarbonate flexes under impact and springs back, absorbing shocks rather than transferring them to the contents. Aluminium is the most rigid and protective, though heavier and prone to visible dents. ABS is lighter and cheaper but more brittle, and it can crack under a hard knock. Soft-sided bags, however tough the fabric, give little protection against crushing.
Look for reinforced corners, a sturdy internal frame, a clamshell design with a divider and compression straps on both halves. These features hold contents firmly in place during handling. Premium luggage from brands such as Samsonite, Delsey, Tumi and Mokobara often uses thicker shells and stronger frames, which is exactly what you are paying for when you carry fragile cargo regularly.
Size matters too. A medium case that is packed firmly protects better than a large one with empty space, because contents cannot shift. If you have only a few fragile items, pack them in a smaller case filled with clothes rather than rattling around in a large one.
The centre-of-the-case method
Imagine your suitcase as a box with a protective border. The outer few centimetres near the shell take the impacts, so fill that zone with soft clothing: jeans, sweaters, towels, and folded kurtas. The wheels and handle end of the case usually takes the hardest knocks, so put shoes and dense non-fragile items there. Fragile items go in the centre, cushioned on all sides.
Wrap each breakable item individually. Socks are perfect for small bottles; a sweater can wrap a ceramic bowl; a rolled T-shirt fills a mug. For very delicate items, use a layer of bubble wrap first, then clothing. Fill every gap with soft items so nothing moves when you shake the closed case gently. If you hear a rattle, open it and fill the space.
Packing cubes are very helpful here. A cube full of rolled clothes forms a soft wall, and two cubes placed either side of a wrapped bottle hold it in a cushioned pocket that stays put however the bag is turned.
Glass bottles, perfume and liquids
Glass bottles of oil, sauces or alcohol should be sealed tightly, with tape around the lid, then placed in a zip bag in case of leaks. Wrap them in clothing and stand them upright in the centre of the case. Reusable wine-bottle sleeves with padding or inflatable cushions offer extra protection and are worth keeping in your travel kit.
Perfume bottles are better in the cabin if they are within liquid limits, because they are both fragile and valuable. Larger bottles in checked luggage should stay in their original box, wrapped in a soft layer. Check airline rules and destination customs limits for alcohol before packing it, as allowances vary widely between countries.
If you are travelling with very valuable bottles, such as a special whisky for a family celebration, consider a dedicated padded bottle carrier or a small hard case within the suitcase.
Sweets, pickles and Indian food
Mithai travels best in sturdy airtight containers rather than thin cardboard boxes. Place the containers in a zip bag, then in a packing cube to stop them being crushed. Dry sweets such as barfi, laddoos and soan papdi travel better than syrup-based ones such as rasgulla and gulab jamun, which are liquids in practice and prone to leaking.
Pickles, chutneys and ghee need leak-proof jars, an extra layer of cling film under the lid and a sealed zip bag. Pack them away from clothes, ideally together in one cube or pouch. Always check the destination's customs rules: many countries restrict meat, dairy, fresh produce and certain seeds, and you may need to declare food on arrival.
Label food containers clearly, in English, with the contents. Customs officers in many countries ask about food, and a clear label speeds up the conversation and shows you are being transparent.
Ceramics, art and souvenirs
For pottery, ceramics and decorative pieces, wrap each item in bubble wrap, then pack it inside a small sturdy box filled with soft material, and place that box in the centre of the suitcase. Double protection, a box within a case, is the most reliable method for anything that would shatter on impact.
Many good shops, especially in craft markets in Jaipur, Kutch or Kashmir, will pack items for travel if you ask, and some offer shipping. For large or very valuable pieces, shipping may be safer than checked baggage. Fragile stickers can encourage careful handling but cannot guarantee it, so always pack as if the bag will be dropped.
Gifts and wrapped items
Wrapped gifts may need to be opened if security wants to inspect them, so it is usually better to pack gifts unwrapped and bring wrapping paper, ribbons or gift bags to finish at your destination. This also saves space, because wrapped boxes are bulky and awkward to cushion.
If you are carrying many wedding or festive gifts, keep a written list of what is in each bag and photograph the contents. It helps with customs questions, helps family members unpack, and is invaluable if a bag is delayed or damaged and you need to make a claim.
Gift bags fold flat and weigh almost nothing, so pack a few in the lid pocket of your suitcase. They turn unwrapped gifts into presentable presents within minutes of arrival.
What to keep in your cabin bag
Some items should never go in the hold, however well packed: jewellery, watches, cameras, laptops, sunglasses, important documents, medicines and anything sentimental or irreplaceable. Airlines typically limit or exclude liability for these in checked baggage, and a damaged heirloom cannot be replaced by compensation.
A padded section in your cabin trolley or a structured tote is the right home for these items. If your cabin bag is gate-checked on a full flight, lift them out before handing it over. If something does break in the hold, report the damage at the airline's baggage desk before leaving the airport, photograph it and keep receipts for any claim.
For weddings, the bride's jewellery and key outfits deserve particular care. Carry them in the cabin in a padded case and a garment bag where the airline allows, and never trust them to the hold.
Fragile packing checklist
Choose a hard-shell case with reinforced corners. Wrap every item individually. Place breakables in the centre, surrounded by clothing. Put shoes and dense items at the wheel end. Fill every gap. Seal liquids and food in zip bags. Check customs rules for food and alcohol. Pack gifts unwrapped. Keep valuables in the cabin. Report any damage at the airport.
With this approach, your mithai, pickles and pottery have the best possible chance of arriving as perfectly as they left. Explore our travel bags for protective hard-shell cases, and read more packing and airport guides on our blog.
