Packing cubes buying guide: what to buy first
In this packing cubes buying guide, the short answer is to start with a set of three: one large cube for bulky clothes, one medium for tops and bottoms, and one small for undergarments and accessories. Choose ripstop or high-denier nylon, smooth double zips, a mesh top panel for visibility and sizes that match the internal dimensions of your suitcase.
Cubes do not create space by magic, but they make packing faster, keep outfits grouped and make living out of a suitcase far more pleasant. Below we explain how to pick sizes, materials and sets so your cubes fit your luggage like a glove.

Are packing cubes worth it?
For most travellers, yes. Cubes turn a suitcase into a chest of drawers. You can lift out the cube with your gym kit without disturbing your evening wear, and unpacking at a hotel takes a minute. They also make security checks easier, as bags open neatly and repack quickly.
Cubes are especially useful for families, because each person can have their own colour, and for multi-city trips where you change hotels every couple of days. They are less useful for minimalist travellers carrying a tiny backpack, where every gram of fabric counts.
They also help with weight distribution, since you can position heavier cubes near the wheels and lighter ones on top.
Cubes are also kind to clothes. Because each cube holds its contents snugly, garments shift less in transit, which means fewer creases on arrival than in a loosely packed case where everything slides to one end the moment the bag is tipped onto its wheels.
Understanding packing cube sizes
Sizes vary by brand, but a typical small cube is around 25 x 18 cm, medium around 35 x 25 cm and large around 45 x 33 cm, all roughly 10 cm deep. Slim cubes, which are long and narrow, are useful for filling the space beside a trolley handle channel.
A cabin trolley of roughly 55 cm usually fits one medium and two small cubes, or one large cube in some designs. A medium check-in case around 65 to 70 cm fits two large and two medium cubes comfortably. Large check-in cases of 75 cm or more can take four large cubes plus smaller ones.
Before buying, measure the internal length and width of each half of your suitcase, then compare them with cube dimensions. Two cubes that each fill exactly half the case are far more useful than four that leave awkward gaps.
Cubes also help on Indian trains and road trips, where luggage is opened in tight spaces. Pulling out a single cube on an upper berth is far easier than opening a full suitcase in the aisle, and it keeps the rest of your things secure and zipped while you change.
Materials and construction
Ripstop nylon is light and tear-resistant, and premium cubes often use high-denier nylon or polyester with a water-resistant coating. Very thin fabric saves weight but bags out and tears at stress points; very thick fabric is durable but heavy.
Mesh top panels let you see what is inside and let clothes breathe, though they can snag on jewellery or zips. Solid panels hide contents but protect delicate fabrics and keep odours contained. Many sets mix both.
Zips are where cheap cubes fail. Look for smooth, well-stitched zips, ideally from a reputable zip maker, with large pullers. Double zips that meet in the middle let you open a cube partly. A grab handle on the end makes lifting cubes out of a deep case easy.
For backpacks and duffles, choose softer, slightly smaller cubes that can flex around the bag's shape. Rigid or oversized cubes leave dead space in soft bags and make them awkward to carry. Two medium cubes and a small one usually fill a 40 litre travel backpack neatly.
Matching cubes to your trip
Weekend getaway: one medium cube for clothes and one small cube for undergarments in a weekender or duffle. Week-long holiday: a set of three or four cubes in a cabin trolley or medium check-in. Long trip or family holiday: two sets in contrasting colours, one per person, in large hard-shell suitcases.
For business travel between Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru, a single slim cube for shirts and trousers paired with a garment folder keeps formalwear crisp. For beach trips to Goa or Bali, a solid cube keeps sandy swimwear separate from clean clothes.
Wedding guests can dedicate one cube per function, labelled haldi, mehendi, sangeet and reception, so every outfit and its accessories stay together.
Colour is a practical choice, not just an aesthetic one. Bright interiors make small items easy to see, and contrasting colours for each family member mean nobody unpacks the wrong cube. If you love neutral luggage, choose cubes in a single tone with coloured zip pulls for quick identification.
How to pack a cube well
Roll soft clothes like T-shirts, leggings and kurtas, and fold structured pieces like blazers and shirts flat. Fill the cube until it is snug but not straining. Overstuffed cubes put strain on zips and make your suitcase bulge.
Pack by outfit or by category, depending on your style. Outfit packing is faster each morning; category packing is more flexible for long trips. Place the heaviest cube near the wheels and the lightest on top.
Keep one small cube empty for laundry, or use a separate laundry bag, so dirty clothes never mingle with clean ones on the return journey.
A small trick from frequent flyers: pack tomorrow's outfit in a separate small cube at the top of the case. On a short stopover or late arrival, you can open the bag, take out that one cube and leave everything else zipped until morning.
Price and premium sets
Basic cube sets cost a few hundred rupees, while premium sets from luggage brands and specialist travel makers cost more but offer better fabric, stitching and zips. Many luxury luggage lines sell cubes designed to fit their own suitcases exactly, which is a worthwhile pairing if you are buying a new case.
If you already own a premium suitcase from a brand like Samsonite, Mokobara, Nasher Miles or Tumi, check whether the brand sells matching organisers. A perfect fit makes the case pack more efficiently than generic cubes.
Spend on the set you will use most, typically medium cubes, and buy extra small cubes cheaply if needed.
Think about lifespan too. A good cube set, used on several trips a year, should last many years, which makes the cost per trip very low even for premium versions. Cheap cubes that split at a seam on the second trip end up costing more in the long run.
Mistakes to avoid
Buying too many cubes is common; extra cubes add weight and fabric that you do not need. Buying sizes that do not fit your suitcase wastes space around the edges. Choosing very light-coloured cubes means they look grubby after a few trips.
Another mistake is treating cubes as compression devices. Standard cubes organise rather than compress; if you need to squeeze bulky winter clothes, look at compression cubes with a second zip, but remember they make bags heavier, not lighter.
Finally, do not forget to wash your cubes occasionally. Most nylon cubes can be hand-washed and air-dried.
Avoid cubes with flimsy handles or no handles at all; lifting a full cube by its fabric strains the seams over time.
Final checklist
Measure your suitcase, buy a set of three in sizes that fill it, choose durable fabric with good zips, mix mesh and solid panels, pick a colour you can spot easily and add a laundry bag. With the right cubes, your suitcase becomes a portable wardrobe.
Pair your organised suitcase with a stylish tote for the flight and a jacket you can layer, and you will arrive organised and polished.
Finally, give the system one trial run before a big trip. Pack your cubes at home, close the suitcase and check the weight. Adjust sizes and contents then, rather than the night before your flight.
