Perfume during pregnancy: the short answer
Many women continue to wear perfume during pregnancy, but because every pregnancy is different, the safest first step is to ask your doctor or midwife whether fragrance use is appropriate for you. Practical precautions that many women find helpful include using less, choosing lighter scents, spraying on clothing rather than skin, avoiding anything that triggers nausea or headaches and stopping immediately if you notice irritation.
This guide is general information, not medical advice. It does not replace the guidance of a qualified doctor, who knows your health history and can advise on specific products or ingredients. If you have any concern at all about a perfume, essential oil or attar, check with your doctor before using it.
With that caution in mind, here is what many women notice about scent during pregnancy and the gentle strategies they use to keep enjoying fragrance comfortably.

Why smell can change so much
Many pregnant women report that their sense of smell becomes much more sensitive, especially in the first trimester. Scents that once felt pleasant can suddenly seem overpowering, and some smells, including favourite perfumes, may trigger nausea. Others notice the opposite and find comfort in familiar fragrances.
These changes are commonly linked to hormonal shifts, though experiences vary widely. They can also change from week to week, so a perfume that feels unbearable in month two may be enjoyable again in month five.
Skin can change too. Some women find their skin becomes more sensitive, drier or more prone to pigmentation. This can affect how perfume smells and how comfortable it feels to apply directly.
Because of these shifts, many women treat pregnancy as a time to wear perfume more lightly and flexibly rather than sticking rigidly to a usual signature.
Keep in mind that your partner, family members and colleagues may notice that you suddenly react to their perfume, incense or room fresheners too. Explaining that your sense of smell has changed during pregnancy usually helps others adjust what they wear around you, at least for a while.
Questions to ask your doctor
Your doctor is the right person to advise on fragrance during pregnancy. Useful questions include whether there are any ingredients you should avoid, whether essential oils or concentrated attars are suitable for you, and whether your skin condition or any pregnancy-related issue changes the advice.
If you have conditions such as asthma, migraines, eczema or allergies, mention them, since these can affect how you respond to fragrance. Ask too about any aromatherapy products, scented candles, room sprays or massage oils you use, since these are often more concentrated than perfume.
Take a photo of the ingredient list on your perfume box. Doctors can give clearer guidance when they can see what is actually in a product rather than just the brand name.
Gentle ways to wear fragrance
Use less. One spray instead of three keeps fragrance subtle, which is kinder to a sensitive nose and to people around you. Some women prefer to apply to the lower body, such as the backs of the knees or the waistband, so the scent is not constantly under their nose.
Spray on clothing rather than skin. A light mist on a scarf, dupatta or the hem of a kurta gives a gentle trail while reducing direct skin contact. If the scent becomes too much, you can simply change the garment, which is far easier than washing it off skin.
Avoid applying to areas with stretch marks, sensitive patches, broken skin or skin that will be in direct sunlight, since some citrus ingredients can increase sun sensitivity.
Keep a fragrance-free day whenever you feel queasy. There is no need to wear perfume every day; listen to how you feel.
Lighter scent profiles many women prefer
Many women find that soft, clean and fresh scents are easier to tolerate during pregnancy than heavy, sweet or smoky ones. Light musks, gentle florals, tea notes, soft woods and airy citrus are common favourites. Heavy oud, intense tuberose, strong spices and dense gourmands may feel overwhelming to a heightened sense of smell.
Lower concentrations such as eau de toilette, body mists or hair mists can be easier to manage than a powerful EDP. However, the right format depends on your comfort and your doctor's advice.
Some women switch to a dedicated pregnancy-era scent, often something light and fresh, and return to their signature afterwards. A new scent can also become a lovely memory of this period of your life.
Whatever you choose, test it on a small area first and pay attention to how you feel over a few hours.
If perfume feels like too much for a while, there are gentler ways to enjoy pleasant smells. Many women find comfort in freshly washed cotton, a cup of ginger or lemon tea, or the smell of fresh flowers in another room where the scent is not concentrated. These gentle smells can feel soothing without the intensity of a perfume sprayed directly on skin.
Some women also enjoy keeping a lightly scented handkerchief or scarf that they can bring close when they want it and put away when they do not. This gives you control, which matters when your sense of smell is unpredictable.
Ask your doctor before using scented candles, room diffusers, incense or aromatherapy products, particularly those containing essential oils, since these release fragrance continuously into the air of a room. Good ventilation, opening windows and stepping outside for fresh air can make a noticeable difference on days when smells feel overwhelming.
A note on essential oils and attars
Essential oils and traditional attars are often described as natural, but natural does not automatically mean suitable during pregnancy. Many essential oils are highly concentrated, and some are commonly advised against during pregnancy. Guidance varies, so speak to your doctor before using essential oils, aromatherapy products or concentrated attars.
If your doctor approves fragrance use, apply attars sparingly. A tiny dab on clothing or a handkerchief may be more comfortable than direct skin application.
Be cautious with products bought from unknown sellers. Counterfeit or poorly made fragrances may contain undeclared ingredients. Buy from reputable brands and retailers that list ingredients clearly.
Considering the people around you
Pregnancy often comes with more visits to clinics, hospitals and family gatherings. Clinics and hospital wards can be sensitive environments, and some ask visitors to avoid strong fragrances. Going scent-free or very light for appointments is considerate.
Other expectant mothers may also be sensitive to smell. In shared spaces like waiting rooms, offices and cabs, a subtle scent is kinder.
As your due date approaches, you may want to think about fragrance around a newborn. Many parents choose to keep perfume very light or avoid it on skin where a baby will rest. Your doctor or paediatrician can offer guidance.
If something does not feel right
Stop using a perfume if you notice itching, redness, rash, headache, dizziness, nausea or breathing discomfort. Wash the area with mild soap and water. Seek urgent medical help for facial swelling or breathing difficulty.
Persistent or worrying symptoms should always be discussed with your doctor. It is better to ask a question that turns out to be unnecessary than to ignore a reaction.
Remember that skipping perfume altogether for some or all of your pregnancy is entirely fine. Fresh, clean skin and laundry have their own comforting scent.
Looking ahead
Many women return to their favourite perfumes after pregnancy, though some find their tastes have changed for good. If your old signature no longer feels right, it may be time to explore a new one. Our guides to finding a signature scent and building a small perfume wardrobe can help when you are ready.
Until then, keep things gentle, flexible and guided by your doctor's advice.
Because tastes can change quickly during pregnancy, it is wise to avoid buying large, expensive bottles until you are sure you will enjoy them. Samples, travel sprays and small bottles let you explore lighter scents without committing to a ₹10,000 bottle that may feel unbearable a few weeks later.
If you receive perfume as a gift during pregnancy, store it carefully in a cool, dark place. You may love it more after your baby arrives, once your sense of smell settles.
