Why skin type changes how perfume behaves

Sebum and moisture on skin act as a reservoir. Fragrance oils dissolve into them and are released gradually. That is why oily skin often reports longer-lasting perfume, and why dry skin often complains that even an expensive EDP disappears in two or three hours.

Skin temperature matters too. Warmer skin pushes molecules into the air faster, increasing projection but shortening life. In Indian summers, everyone's skin is warmer, so all skin types see faster evaporation.

Finally, the skin's natural chemistry, influenced by diet, hormones, medication and skincare products, can subtly change how specific notes smell. This is less predictable than oil levels but explains why some people say a perfume turns sour or sweeter on them.

If you have oily skin

Oily skin is an advantage for longevity, but it can also amplify sweetness and heaviness. Vanilla, caramel, tonka, heavy musks and amber can become cloying, especially in humid cities like Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai. Bright citrus, aromatic herbs, green notes, tea, light florals and woods often feel cleaner and more balanced.

Use fewer sprays than the bottle or sales staff suggest. On oily skin, two sprays of an EDP can last a full workday. If you love rich perfumes, apply one spray to skin and one to clothing, or choose the EDT version for daytime.

Avoid layering a heavily scented body cream under perfume, which can make the combination overpowering. An unscented gel moisturiser keeps skin balanced without adding extra oil.

Oily skin can sometimes make perfume smell slightly different, often warmer or sharper. Always test a full day on your own skin rather than relying on a friend's experience.

Humidity complicates the picture for oily skin. During the monsoon, sweat and sebum mix and can make even a fresh perfume smell slightly heavier by evening. Spraying on clean, dry skin straight after a shower and adding a little to clothing gives the cleanest result.

If you have dry skin

Choose richer concentrations and heavier bases. Eau de parfum and extrait typically last longer than eau de toilette. Ambers, sandalwood, vanilla, patchouli, oud, labdanum and musks cling to skin and slow evaporation of the lighter notes above them.

Fabric is your ally. A light mist on a scarf, dupatta or jacket lining can last far longer than on dry skin. Hair also holds scent well, though avoid spraying the scalp and be mindful that alcohol can dry hair.

Attars and perfume oils are another strong option for dry skin. Being oil-based, they moisturise slightly as they scent and often last impressively, even in small amounts.

Combination and changing skin

Many people have combination skin, oilier on the chest and neck, drier on the wrists and arms. Use this to your advantage: apply fresh perfumes to drier areas where they will feel lighter, and richer perfumes to oilier areas where they will last.

Skin also changes with seasons. Delhi winters dry skin out, while monsoon months make it oilier. A perfume that seemed weak in December may feel strong in July. Adjust the number of sprays rather than changing your signature each season.

Exfoliating acids, retinoids and harsh soaps can dry skin and shorten longevity, and they can also make skin more reactive. Testing for your skin type

When sampling, test on the area where you intend to wear the perfume. If you usually spray your neck, test there rather than on the wrist, as the skin can behave differently.

Smell at 15 minutes, two hours and six hours. On oily skin, check whether the base becomes too heavy. On dry skin, check whether the scent disappears too soon. Ask a friend to smell from arm's length to judge projection.

Concentration interacts with skin type in useful ways. An eau de toilette on oily skin can behave almost like an eau de parfum on dry skin, lasting a good five or six hours with moderate projection.
