Why keep a perfume journal
A perfume journal is a simple record of every fragrance you test or wear: its notes, how it smelled on your skin over time, how long it lasted, how you felt and what others said. Keeping one helps you spot the notes you consistently love or dislike, avoid repeat mistakes and choose your next luxury bottle with far more confidence.
Most perfume lovers forget what they tested within weeks. Was it the iris one or the rose one that lasted all day? Which perfume gave you a headache at that wedding? A journal answers these questions instantly.
It also trains your nose. The act of describing what you smell forces you to pay attention, and over months your ability to recognise notes and families improves noticeably. This guide covers what to record, a template you can copy and tips for keeping the habit going.
A journal is also a powerful antidote to hype. Social media is full of perfumes described as must-haves, and it is easy to feel pressure to buy the latest launch. When you have a record showing that you consistently dislike a certain style, you can enjoy the online buzz without spending ₹10,000 on a perfume your own notes say you will not wear.

Choosing a format
Use whatever you will actually maintain. A small notebook kept with your perfumes feels personal and works well for people who enjoy writing by hand.
A notes app on your phone is convenient, since you can record impressions on the go, at a counter or during an evening out. Add a photo of the bottle or box for quick reference.
A spreadsheet suits people who like to sort and filter, for example by fragrance family, longevity or price. It becomes a searchable database over time.
Some people combine formats: quick phone notes during the day, transferred to a notebook or spreadsheet weekly.
If you enjoy visual records, add photos of the bottle, the box and even the outfit you wore with a perfume. Over time, this becomes a beautiful personal archive that links scent, style and memory, and it makes scrolling back through past entries far more enjoyable than reading plain text.
What to record for every perfume
Basic details: perfume name, brand, concentration such as EDT, EDP, extrait or attar, and where you tested or bought it. Note the size and price if you are considering buying.
Listed notes: copy the top, heart and base notes from the brand or retailer. Over time, these lists reveal patterns.
Your impressions over time: write a few words at the first spray, after 15 minutes, after two hours and after six hours. Focus on what you actually smell rather than what the notes list says.
Performance: how long it lasted on skin and on fabric, and how far it projected. Note the weather and setting, since Indian heat and air conditioning change performance a lot.
Feelings and feedback: how you felt wearing it, and any comments from others. Did it make you feel confident, cosy, overdressed or uncomfortable?
A simple template to copy
Here is a compact template you can use for each entry. Name and brand. Concentration. Date and weather. Where applied. Listed notes. First impression in three words. Two-hour impression. Six-hour impression. Longevity on skin. Projection on a scale of one to five. Mood. Comments from others. Would I buy it, yes, no or maybe, and why.
Keep entries short. Three or four lines are enough. The value comes from consistency over many perfumes, not from long essays about one.
Add a star rating if it helps you compare quickly, but always include a reason, since ratings alone are hard to interpret later.
For a quick test at a counter, use a shorter version: name, three words for the opening, and a reminder to check again later. Then complete the entry in the evening. The key is to capture the first impression while it is fresh, because by the end of a day of shopping, every perfume tends to blur together.
How a journal trains your nose
Describing a smell is harder than it sounds. At first, you might only write sweet, fresh or strong. With practice, you begin to notice more: is the sweetness vanilla, caramel or fruit? Is the freshness citrus, green or aquatic?
Comparing your impressions with the listed notes helps you learn. If the notes say iris and you wrote powdery and lipstick-like, you have just learned what iris smells like to you.
Smelling raw ingredients in daily life helps too. Note the smell of cardamom, rose water, sandalwood, vetiver roots, jasmine flowers and citrus peel. These real-world references make perfume notes easier to identify.
Over months, you will notice your vocabulary growing and your ability to predict whether you will like a perfume just from its notes.
You can also practise with your own kitchen. Smell whole spices like cardamom, clove, cinnamon and black pepper, then compare them with perfumes listing those notes. Do the same with fresh flowers, citrus peel and tea leaves. This kind of side-by-side comparison speeds up learning dramatically and is completely free.
Spotting patterns in your taste
After 20 or 30 entries, review your journal. Highlight perfumes you loved and those you disliked. Look for shared notes and families.
You might discover that every perfume you loved contained sandalwood or musk, or that everything with patchouli gave you a headache. You may find you prefer EDPs over EDTs because of Indian heat, or that certain brands consistently suit you.
These insights make shopping far more efficient. Instead of testing randomly, you can target perfumes with your favourite notes and avoid your triggers.
Patterns also help when buying gifts for yourself or asking others for recommendations.
Patterns can be surprising. Some women discover they love perfumes they assumed were not for them, such as leather or incense, simply because their journal shows consistently positive reactions. Others realise that a famous note they thought they loved actually appears in most of their disliked entries. The data quietly corrects assumptions.
Tracking your collection and wear
Beyond testing, a journal can track your collection: purchase dates, invoices, batch codes and how often you wear each bottle. This is useful for authenticity checks, warranty or return questions, and simply knowing what you own.
Recording which perfume you wore on special occasions, such as weddings, festivals and trips, creates a scent diary of your life. Years later, it becomes a lovely record of memories.
Wear-tracking also reveals bottles you rarely use, helping you decide what to gift or declutter.
Note storage conditions too. If a perfume smells off, your notes may show it was kept somewhere warm.
Recording the price you paid and where you bought each bottle also helps you spot genuine value during future festive sales.
Keeping the habit going
Make it easy. Keep your notebook next to your perfumes or pin a notes template on your phone. Record impressions immediately, before you forget.
Do not aim for perfection. Even partial entries are useful. Some days you might only note the name and one word.
Make it social. Share your journal with a friend who loves perfume, or compare notes after testing the same scent. Different impressions are fascinating and teach you a lot.
Review it monthly. A quick read-through keeps your insights fresh and often sparks ideas for what to test next.
If you lose momentum, restart with just your current favourites. Writing about perfumes you already own and love is easy and enjoyable, and it often reignites the habit before your next round of testing.
Using your journal to buy better
Before buying any luxury perfume, check your journal. Have you tested it before? How did it perform? Does it share notes with perfumes you loved or disliked?
Bring your journal insights to the counter. Telling sales staff that you love creamy sandalwood and dislike heavy patchouli gets you better recommendations instantly.
Use your notes to compare value too. Luxury EDPs often start from about ₹5,000, and a journal helps ensure every purchase is one you will genuinely wear. Explore curated picks when you are ready.
