In Indian heat this matters. Fresh citrus, green and aquatic perfumes suffer most from light and warmth. Rich amber, oud and vanilla scents are more forgiving. If you buy a tester, store it in a cool, dark cupboard and, if it has no cap, keep it in a box or pouch.

How to judge a tester before buying

Ask the seller whether it is sealed or used, and for photos of the actual bottle including the fill level and batch code. Check reviews specifically for tester purchases. Compare the price with the retail bottle: a modest discount is plausible, a dramatic one is suspicious.

When it arrives, check the bottle shape, logo, sprayer mist and scent development over several hours, just as you would with a retail bottle. If it smells harsh, vanishes in minutes or the bottle looks different from the brand's design, raise it with the seller quickly.

Other warning signs include very large stocks of testers from a seller with little history, testers of brand-new launches available before the perfume has even reached Indian stores, and no batch code on the bottle.
