Why a perfume unboxing checklist matters

A perfume unboxing checklist helps you confirm, within minutes of delivery, that your bottle is genuine, undamaged, the right version and fresh enough to enjoy. Because perfume return windows are short and policies on opened fragrance are strict, the first hour after delivery is when you have the most power to fix a problem.

Many buyers rip open the parcel, spray excitedly and only notice a mismatched batch code or a loose cap days later, when the seller can easily say the problem happened at home. A calm, ordered unboxing avoids that.

Below are twelve checks grouped into four stages: the parcel, the box, the bottle and the scent. Keep this list on your phone for every perfume order above ₹2,500.

The routine takes about ten minutes, plus a few hours of wearing the perfume, and it can save you thousands of rupees on a single bad order.

Before you open: set up and record

Check one: start recording. Film a continuous video from the moment you pick up the sealed parcel, showing the shipping label, the tape and all sides of the package. Some platforms require such videos for claims about wrong or damaged items, and even where they do not, it is excellent evidence.

Check two: inspect the outer parcel. Note any crushed corners, wet patches, torn tape or a strong perfume smell, which may mean the bottle has leaked or broken in transit. If the parcel is badly damaged, photograph it before opening and consider refusing delivery if the platform allows.

Do this in good daylight or bright indoor light, on a clean table, so details are visible in your video and photos.

Keep the shipping label and outer packaging until the return window closes; they may be needed if you raise a claim.

Stage one: the perfume box

Check three: the cellophane. For a new retail bottle, the wrap should be tight, clear and neatly sealed with narrow seams. Loose, wrinkled or obviously re-glued wrap is a warning sign. Testers and some products come without wrap, so judge in context.

Check four: box print and quality. Look for crisp text, even colours, aligned foil or embossing, correct spelling and sturdy card. Check that the concentration and volume printed match what you ordered, for example EDP rather than EDT, and 100 ml rather than 50 ml.

Check five: labelling. Products sold through official Indian channels usually list importer or marketer details, net quantity and other required information. Note whether these appear, which also tells you whether the stock is likely authorised or imported through other routes.

If the box is a gift set, check that every listed item is present and sealed.

Also confirm that the item in the box is what the invoice describes. Some mix-ups happen at warehouses with similar-looking flankers or sizes, and spotting this before opening the cellophane makes a replacement far simpler.

Stage two: batch codes

Check six: find the batch code on the bottom of the box and on the bottle, usually on the base or a small label. Photograph both clearly.

Check seven: compare them. They should match. A missing code, a scratched-off code or two different codes suggests the bottle may not be in its original box, a common sign of repackaged, grey-market or counterfeit stock.

You can also use a batch-check tool for a rough production date. Treat the result as an estimate, but if a fresh citrus perfume decodes as very old, note it.

Write the codes and estimated date into your phone notes alongside the seller name and price for future reference.

Smell the box itself too. A strong perfume smell on a sealed box can indicate a leak inside, or a bottle that has been opened and resealed, both worth noting on your video before you go further.

Stage three: the bottle

Check eight: glass and logo. Hold the bottle to the light. Look for smooth, clear glass without bubbles, clean edges and sharp logos. Compare with images on the brand's official site.

Check nine: cap and collar. The cap should fit firmly and feel as heavy as its design suggests. Magnetic caps should snap cleanly. The collar around the sprayer should be straight and secure, with no perfume seeping around it.

Check ten: dip tube, fill level and juice. The tube inside should be thin, clear and reach close to the bottom. The fill level on a new bottle should be consistent with a full bottle. The liquid should be clear with no floating particles.

Gently tilt the bottle over a tissue to check for leaks around the sprayer before you test it.

If the box looks right but feels unusually light, weigh it in your hand against your expectation of a full glass bottle. A very light box may indicate a missing or empty bottle, which you will want on video.

Stage four: the spray and scent

Check eleven: the sprayer. Spray once into the air. A genuine atomiser usually produces a fine, even mist. Spitting, streams of liquid or a stuck pump may indicate a defect or a fake.

Check twelve: the scent on skin. Spray once on your inner wrist and wear it for several hours. Note the opening, how it evolves after an hour and how it smells after four hours. Compare with a store tester or sample if you have one. A harsh alcohol smell that never settles, a flat one-note scent or very rapid fading are reasons to investigate further.

If your skin reacts with redness or itching, stop using it, wash the area and keep the bottle aside while you contact the seller.

Do not spray repeatedly just to test the sprayer; a couple of sprays tells you everything you need.

Pay attention to the base of the bottle as well. Many genuine bottles have small moulding marks or engraved details on the bottom that are neat and consistent. Rough, uneven bases are another detail to note.

If something is wrong

Act quickly. Gather your video, photos of the box, codes and bottle, and the invoice. Contact the seller and the platform within the return window, describing the issue clearly and factually. Policies typically vary by seller, so refer to the listing's return terms.

Keep the perfume, box and packaging together and avoid using the perfume further while the claim is open. If the seller refuses a valid claim, escalate through the platform's support channels.

Leave an honest, factual review once the issue is resolved, which helps other buyers choose better sellers.

If you are testing several perfumes from one order, test them on different days or on different arms so you can judge each one fairly without the scents mixing.

Storing the perfume once it passes

If everything checks out, enjoy your perfume. Return it to its box and store it upright in a cool, dark cupboard away from bathrooms and windows, especially in summer.

Keep the box, invoice and your notes. They protect resale value, help you track batches of perfumes you repurchase and support any later warranty or quality questions.

If you bought it as a gift, rewrap it carefully and keep the invoice in a safe place in case the recipient needs to exchange it.

Be specific in your complaint. Instead of writing that the perfume seems fake, list exactly what you found: different batch codes on box and bottle, loose cellophane, a light plastic cap and a sprayer that squirts rather than mists. Precise details make claims far easier to approve.

Make it a habit

The more you repeat this checklist, the faster it becomes. After a few orders, you will spot a loose wrap or mismatched code in seconds. That habit, combined with buying from trusted sellers, is the most reliable way to enjoy luxury perfume online without unpleasant surprises.
