Power bank rules on flights: the essentials
Power bank rules on flights are broadly consistent across airlines: power banks and spare lithium batteries usually must travel in your cabin baggage, never in checked luggage, and they are typically subject to a capacity limit expressed in watt-hours. Many airlines also restrict or ban charging devices from a power bank during the flight. The precise limits and in-flight rules differ by carrier and change over time, so check your airline's dangerous goods page before you fly.
For most women travellers, this means one simple habit: the power bank lives in your handbag or cabin trolley, never in the suitcase you hand over at the counter. Get that right and the rest is about choosing a sensible capacity and packing it so security can see it quickly.
This guide explains why the rules exist, how to read the numbers printed on your power bank, what happens with smart luggage, and how to pack your tech pouch for a smooth screening.

Why power banks are kept out of the hold
Lithium-ion cells store a lot of energy in a small space. If one is damaged, crushed or faulty, it can overheat and, in rare cases, catch fire. In the cabin, crew can see smoke and respond with fire containment equipment. In the cargo hold, a fire could go unnoticed for longer, which is why aviation regulators treat spare batteries so carefully.
Devices with batteries installed, such as phones and laptops, are treated differently from spare batteries, though airlines still prefer them in the cabin. Spare batteries, power banks and battery packs for cameras or vapes are the items most strictly kept out of checked baggage.
If a power bank is found in a checked bag during screening, the airline may call you back to remove it or may remove it themselves. At best that delays you; at worst your bag misses the flight.
Understanding mAh and Wh
Power banks are usually labelled in milliamp-hours, such as 10,000 mAh or 20,000 mAh. Airlines, however, typically use watt-hours. To convert, multiply the mAh figure by the voltage, usually 3.6 or 3.7 volts for lithium cells, and divide by 1,000. A 10,000 mAh bank at 3.7 V is about 37 Wh; a 20,000 mAh bank is about 74 Wh.
Many airlines typically allow power banks up to around 100 Wh without approval, and some allow 100 to 160 Wh with airline permission, while anything above that is usually not allowed. Some carriers also limit the number of power banks per passenger. These are common guidelines, not universal rules, so confirm with your airline.
Always buy a power bank with the capacity and Wh rating clearly printed on the casing. Security staff may refuse an unmarked or damaged unit even if it is small, because they cannot verify its rating.
A practical tip: photograph the label on the back of your power bank when it is new. Printing wears off with use, and having a clear picture on your phone can help if an officer asks about the rating and the casing has become hard to read.
Using a power bank during the flight
An increasing number of airlines restrict using or charging power banks on board, and some ask you to keep them out of the overhead bin so they are within reach if they overheat. Listen to the cabin announcements and read your airline's guidance, as policies have tightened in recent years across Asia and the Middle East.
If your seat has a USB or power outlet, use it rather than the power bank. On long-haul flights, charge your phone and earphones to full before boarding and switch to airplane mode with low brightness. You will likely land with enough battery for maps and a cab app.
Keep the power bank in your personal item under the seat, not buried in the trolley overhead. It is easier to monitor and complies with airlines that ask for batteries to stay accessible.
Smart luggage with built-in batteries
Some luxury trolleys include a USB port connected to a removable battery pocket. Airlines typically require the battery to be removable, and if the bag is checked or gate-checked, the battery must be taken out and carried in the cabin. Bags with non-removable batteries may not be accepted at all on many airlines.
In practice, most premium cabin trolleys from brands like Samsonite, Mokobara or Nasher Miles that feature a USB port simply provide a cable route to a power bank you insert yourself. That design is helpful, because you can pull the power bank out in seconds if your bag is tagged for the hold at the gate.
If you love this feature, practise removing the power bank at home. When a gate agent asks you to check your bag on a full flight, you will not be fumbling with zips while the queue grows.
How to pack your tech for screening
Use one dedicated tech pouch for the power bank, cables, charger and earphones. Keep it near the top of your cabin bag or in a front pocket. At some airports you may be asked to remove electronics larger than a phone; with a pouch, it takes seconds.
Protect the power bank from crushing and short circuits. Do not let loose coins, keys or hairpins touch the ports, and avoid packing it under heavy shoes. A neoprene sleeve or the original pouch is ideal. Spare camera batteries should have terminal covers or be placed in individual plastic bags.
Label your power bank with your name or initials. They all look alike in security trays, and it is surprisingly easy to lose one at a busy screening point in Delhi or Dubai.
Choosing the right power bank for travel
For most trips, a 10,000 mAh unit around 37 Wh charges a phone twice and sits comfortably within typical limits. Heavy users or those carrying a tablet may choose a 20,000 mAh unit around 74 Wh, which is still usually acceptable but heavier. Laptop power banks can approach 100 Wh, so check the label carefully.
Prefer models from reputable manufacturers with certification markings and overheating protection. Cheap unbranded units are more likely to be poorly made and are the ones security staff look at with the most suspicion.
Weight matters for a 7 kg cabin allowance too. A 20,000 mAh unit can weigh around 350 to 450 grams, which is a pair of sandals. If you mostly fly short domestic hops, a smaller unit is more sensible.
Think about the cables too. A single braided USB-C cable with a short USB-A adapter covers most phones, earphones and watches, and it stops the tangle of wires that makes a tech pouch look like a bird's nest at the screening tray.
Travelling with laptops, cameras and other batteries
Laptops, tablets and cameras with batteries installed are normally allowed in the cabin, and many airlines prefer that they travel there. If you check a laptop in the hold, which is generally discouraged, it should be fully switched off, not in sleep mode, and protected from crushing. Airlines may also ask for devices to be switched off rather than left on standby in checked bags.
Spare camera batteries, drone batteries and vape devices follow the same logic as power banks: cabin only, terminals protected, and capacity limits for larger units. Drone batteries in particular can exceed common thresholds, so photographers heading to Ladakh or Iceland should read the airline rules carefully and plan how many batteries they can actually carry.
Hair tools with lithium batteries, electric toothbrushes and portable fans are usually fine in the cabin, but always check whether the battery is removable and whether the airline wants it carried separately.
Quick checklist before you fly
Check the Wh rating on your power bank and your airline's limit. Pack it in the cabin, never in checked baggage. Keep it in a pouch at the top of your personal item. Remove it from smart luggage if the bag is checked. Follow crew instructions on in-flight use.
These steps take less than a minute but save you from the most common battery-related problem at Indian airports: hearing your name on the public address system asking you to return to the screening area.
