What a refillable perfume atomiser is for

A refillable perfume atomiser is a small spray bottle, usually five to ten millilitres, that you fill from your main perfume so you can carry a little in your handbag for top-ups. It protects your expensive full bottle from heat, knocks and light, and lets you refresh discreetly during the day.

Atomisers also help you use up the last of a bottle. When a full bottle is nearly empty and the sprayer struggles to pick up the final few millilitres, carefully decanting what remains into an atomiser means none of your perfume goes to waste.

Choosing the right size

Five millilitres is ideal for a handbag or clutch. It typically holds around fifty sprays, enough for a few weeks of single refreshes.

Eight to ten millilitres suits women who reapply daily or share between two bags. It is still slim enough for most handbags.

Larger sizes, fifteen to thirty millilitres, are better thought of as travel bottles. They are bulkier and the perfume inside may sit for longer before use, which exposes it to more air.

Twist-up atomisers with a slim profile are popular for clutches. Some open by twisting the base to reveal the spray, which protects the nozzle from being pressed accidentally inside your bag.

Look for atomisers with a fine, even mist rather than a squirt. A good mist distributes perfume lightly, which is exactly what you want for a refresh.

How to fill without waste

Work over a clean towel on a flat surface, in good light. If your bottle allows, remove the spray nozzle gently and use the bottom-fill method.

If the nozzle is fixed, spray directly into the atomiser opening. Hold the bottle close and spray in short bursts to minimise misting. A small funnel placed in the opening helps catch the spray.

Do not overfill. Leave a little air space so the atomiser pump works properly and pressure changes do not push perfume out.

Label the atomiser with the perfume name and date if you own several. It is surprisingly easy to forget which scent is which.

Consider your routine when choosing. If you change handbags often, two small atomisers, one in each bag, may be more convenient than moving one back and forth. If you only carry a clutch for weddings, the slimmest five millilitre option is best.

Keep a spare empty atomiser at home, so you can swap scents with the seasons without cleaning in a hurry.

Preventing leaks

Check that the cap fits tightly and that the nozzle is screwed or pressed in fully. A loose nozzle is the most common cause of leaks.

Keep the atomiser upright in an inner pocket, or in a small pouch, rather than loose at the bottom of your bag.

Avoid exposing it to big temperature swings, such as a hot car followed by a cold office, which can make the liquid expand and push past seals.

If an atomiser has leaked once, replace it rather than trusting it again. Leaked perfume can mark the lining of your bag.

Cleaning between perfumes

If you switch the perfume in an atomiser, clean it thoroughly to avoid mixing scents. Rinse with warm water, then with a little isopropyl alcohol or a high-proof unscented alcohol if available, and spray some through the nozzle.

Leave it to dry completely, open, for a day before refilling. Any trapped water can dilute the next perfume and encourage spoilage.

Keeping the decanted perfume fresh

Decanted perfume is exposed to more air than the original bottle, so it ages faster. Fill only what you will use within a month or two.

Store the atomiser away from sun and heat when it is not in your bag. Your dressing table drawer is better than a sunny windowsill.

If the decanted scent starts smelling sharp, sour or flat compared with the original bottle, empty it and refill with fresh perfume.

Remember that atomisers can be a lovely way to share a perfume with friends, so they can test it for a few weeks before buying their own.

Atomisers do have limits. A tiny spray can never fully replicate the presentation of a luxury bottle, and the nozzle may deliver a slightly lighter or heavier mist than your original. Adjust your spray count accordingly, and test it once at home so you know how much one press delivers.
