How to Remove Musty Smell From a Suitcase: 2026 Guide

Published by the Style Desk

How to remove musty smell from a suitcase: air it out, vacuum, baking soda, vinegar, sunlight and charcoal, plus how to stop the smell coming back in monsoon.

Fastest way to fix a musty suitcase

To remove a musty smell from a suitcase, empty it, vacuum the lining, wipe it with a cloth dampened in a 1:1 mix of white vinegar and water, and leave it open in a shaded, breezy spot to dry. Then sprinkle baking soda inside, zip it up for 24 to 48 hours and vacuum it out. For stubborn odours, repeat with activated charcoal or a bowl of coffee grounds left inside for several days.

That musty, slightly sour smell comes from trapped moisture and the mildew that grows in it. It is very common in Indian homes, where suitcases spend months in lofts, under beds or in wardrobes through humid monsoons. The good news is that most cases can be completely freshened without harsh chemicals. The key is removing the moisture and the spores, not just masking them with perfume.

Why suitcases start to smell

Suitcases are closed boxes with fabric linings. When they are put away even slightly damp, after a rainy trip, a beach holiday or simply a humid unpacking day, the moisture has nowhere to go. Mildew spores, which are everywhere, settle into the lining and begin growing in the dark, producing that distinctive damp odour. Sweat-soaked clothes, damp towels, food packets and leaking toiletries make it worse.

Storage location matters. A loft above a bathroom, a space near an exterior wall that gets damp, or a cupboard that is rarely opened are all prone to trapping humidity. Plastic covers, often used to keep dust off, actually seal in moisture. Understanding these causes helps you not only fix the smell but stop it returning.

Hard-shell and soft cases smell for slightly different reasons. In a polycarbonate case, the shell itself does not absorb odour, so the smell sits almost entirely in the lining, pockets and any foam under the lining. In soft luggage, the outer fabric, padding and internal boards can all hold moisture, which is why soft cases often take longer to freshen. Knowing this helps you focus your cleaning where it matters and set realistic expectations for how many rounds of airing it will take.

Step 1: Empty, shake out and air

Remove everything from the case, including the small items hiding in mesh pockets and zip compartments. Shake it upside down outdoors to dislodge dust and debris. Then open the case fully and leave it in a well-ventilated, shaded place for several hours, ideally a full day. A breezy balcony is perfect. Indirect sunlight helps, because ultraviolet light inhibits mildew, but avoid hours of harsh direct sun, which can fade colours and stress plastic shells.

For mild odours, airing alone is often enough. Take a sniff after a day. If the smell has faded but not disappeared, move to the cleaning steps below.

Pay special attention to the lining seams and the area under any internal dividers, compression boards or straps. These spots trap moisture and are often where the smell is strongest. If your case has a removable divider, take it out, wipe both sides and dry it separately so air can reach the lining beneath.

Step 2: Vacuum and wipe the lining

Vacuum the entire lining with an upholstery attachment, including seams, corners, pockets and the zip tracks. This removes spores, dust and debris that feed mildew. Then mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a bowl. Dampen a microfibre cloth, wring it well, and wipe the lining thoroughly. Vinegar helps neutralise odours and inhibits mildew. The vinegar smell itself fades as it dries.

If you see visible mildew spots, which look like small grey, black or green dots, treat them with a little more of the vinegar solution, blotting rather than rubbing so you do not spread them. On removable linings, check the care label; many can be hand-washed in cool water with mild detergent and dried flat. Always let the case dry fully, open, before the next step.

Step 3: Absorb what is left

Once dry, sprinkle a generous layer of baking soda across the bottom of the case and into pockets. Close the case and leave it for at least a day, longer for strong smells, then vacuum it out thoroughly. Baking soda absorbs odours rather than masking them. For hard-to-reach linings, put baking soda in a cotton sock or muslin pouch and leave several inside.

Alternatives include activated charcoal bags, which are excellent at absorbing odour and moisture and can be reused after sunning; dry used coffee grounds in an open bowl, which leave a pleasant smell; and newspaper scrunched inside the case for a few days. Silica gel packets absorb moisture, which helps prevent recurrence. Keep any of these away from direct contact with leather trims, which can be marked.

For a gentle fragrance after the odour has gone, tuck a sachet of dried lavender, a few cloves in muslin or a fresh bar of unwrapped soap into a pocket. These add a pleasant scent without moisture, unlike sprays, and you can replace them every few months. Keep them away from leather and light-coloured linings to avoid marks.

Leather and fabric cases need different care

For leather duffles and weekenders, avoid soaking the lining with vinegar solution and keep it well away from the leather exterior. Use a slightly damp cloth on the lining only, and wipe the leather with a leather cleaner if it has mildew. After drying, apply conditioner, because vinegar and drying both pull moisture out of leather.

For fabric luggage such as ballistic nylon or polyester cases, the exterior can hold odours too. Wipe it with the vinegar solution or a mild soapy cloth, then air-dry. Odours trapped in thick foam padding, common in soft cases, take longer to clear; repeated airing and baking soda treatments over several days usually work.

What not to do

Do not simply spray perfume, room freshener or deodorant inside. These mask the smell temporarily, add moisture and can stain linings. Do not use bleach on coloured linings, as it causes patchy discoloration and is harsh on fabric. Avoid closing the case before every part is fully dry; even a damp corner can restart the problem.

Avoid heaters, hair dryers on high heat and leaving the case in a hot car to dry it faster. Heat can warp plastic frames and damage adhesives. And do not store the freshly cleaned case back in the same damp spot without changing something about the storage.

Think about the clothes you pack too. Clothing put away slightly damp or worn once and packed again transfers odour to the lining. Use a separate laundry pouch for worn clothes on a trip, and wash it when you get home. Shoes are another common source of smell; pack them in breathable shoe bags rather than directly in the case.

Keeping the smell from coming back

Prevention is about moisture. Always unpack within a day of returning, let the empty case air for a few hours, and never store wet clothes, towels or swimwear inside even for a night. Keep a few silica gel packets or a small charcoal bag inside each stored suitcase and replace or recharge them every couple of months, more often in monsoon.

Store luggage in a dry, ventilated spot, away from bathrooms and exterior walls, and in breathable cotton covers rather than plastic. Open the cases once a month during the rainy season to air them. A small sachet of dried neem leaves, cloves or a cedar block adds a pleasant smell and is a traditional deterrent for insects.

When it is time to let go

If a suitcase still smells after several rounds of cleaning, airing and absorbing, the mildew may have penetrated foam padding or the inner shell structure. Black spots that keep returning, crumbling lining or a lingering smell that transfers to your clothes means the case is no longer pleasant to travel with.

A fresh case is a good opportunity to choose one with a removable, washable lining and a polycarbonate shell that resists moisture. Browse our travel bag edit, and look at breathable tote bags for short trips that you can wash and dry easily.

Frequently asked questions

What is the price range of remove musty smell from suitcase?+

Our top 20 picks range from ₹299 to ₹29,886 on Amazon.in.

How do I get rid of a damp smell in my suitcase?+

Empty and air the case, vacuum the lining, wipe it with a 1:1 white vinegar and water solution, and let it dry fully. Then leave baking soda or activated charcoal inside for one to two days and vacuum it out. Store it with silica gel in a dry place.

Does baking soda really remove luggage odour?+

Yes. Baking soda absorbs odour molecules rather than masking them. Sprinkle it inside the dry case, close it for 24 to 48 hours and vacuum it out thoroughly. For stronger odours, repeat the process or combine with activated charcoal.

Can sunlight remove a musty smell from luggage?+

Indirect sunlight and fresh air help a great deal, as ultraviolet light inhibits mildew. Leave the case open on a shaded, breezy balcony for a day. Avoid hours of harsh direct sun, which can fade colours, weaken plastic and damage leather.

Is it safe to use vinegar inside a suitcase?+

Diluted white vinegar is safe on most polyester and nylon linings and on hard shells. Use a well-wrung cloth, not a soaking spray, and let it dry fully. Keep it off leather and test on a hidden spot first if the lining is a delicate fabric.

How do I stop my suitcase smelling during monsoon storage?+

Store it only when completely dry, in a breathable cotton cover, away from damp walls and bathrooms. Keep silica gel or charcoal inside, replace them regularly, and open the case monthly to air. Never store damp clothes or towels inside.
