Can you really remove scratches?
You can remove most surface scuffs and fine scratches from a polycarbonate suitcase, but you cannot fully erase deep gouges. Light marks usually disappear with soap, a melamine sponge or a plastic polish applied by hand; deeper scratches can be softened and made less visible, not removed. The trick is knowing which kind you have before you start rubbing.
Run a fingernail across the mark. If your nail does not catch, it is a surface scuff, often just transferred rubber or paint from another bag, and it will probably come off completely. If your nail catches slightly, it is a fine scratch in the shell itself that polishing can reduce. If your nail drops into a groove, it is a gouge, and the best you can do is clean it and accept it as part of the case's story. This guide covers all three, with methods that are safe for the glossy and matte finishes used by most premium brands.

Why polycarbonate scratches so easily
Polycarbonate is prized because it flexes under impact and springs back instead of cracking, which is why serious checked luggage uses it rather than cheaper ABS. The trade-off is a relatively soft surface. Belt loaders, trolley rails, other suitcases and even the rough concrete of a railway platform all leave marks. Glossy and metallic finishes show every line, while textured, ribbed or matte shells hide them well.
Some brands apply a hard coat or a textured film over the polycarbonate to improve scratch resistance. That coating is thin, which matters: aggressive polishing can cut through it and leave a dull patch that looks worse than the scratch. So whatever method you use, go gently, test on the base panel near the wheels, and check the result in daylight before you move to a visible area.
Step 1: Clean and identify the mark
Wash the area with lukewarm water and a drop of mild dish soap on a microfibre cloth, then dry it. A surprising number of what look like scratches are actually rubber, paint or grime sitting on top of the shell. Belt marks from airports such as Delhi T3 or Mumbai T2 are notorious for this, leaving grey or black lines that wipe off with a little patience.
If the mark remains, dampen a melamine sponge, squeeze it almost dry and rub only the mark with light pressure for a few seconds. Wipe and check. Melamine is a micro-abrasive, so on glossy finishes it can create a faint haze if overused. Stop as soon as the mark fades. On textured shells, a soft toothbrush with soapy water gets into the grooves better than a sponge.
Step 2: Polish fine scratches by hand
For scratches your nail just catches on, use a plastic polish of the kind sold for car headlights, helmet visors or acrylic. Apply a pea-sized amount to a clean microfibre pad and rub in small circles with steady, light pressure for a minute or two, then buff off with a fresh cloth. Repeat two or three times if needed. The aim is to round off the sharp edges of the scratch so it stops catching light, which is what makes it visible.
Work in a small area and keep checking from different angles. Polishing too long in one spot can create a shiny patch on a matte shell or a dull patch on a glossy one. Toothpaste is often suggested online; plain white toothpaste is mildly abrasive and can work on tiny scuffs, but it is inconsistent and gel varieties do nothing. A purpose-made plastic polish is more predictable and costs only a few hundred rupees.
Step 3: Deal with deep gouges
Deep gouges cannot be polished out without removing a lot of material, which thins the shell around the damaged area. Instead, clean the groove with a cotton bud so dirt does not settle in it and darken it over time. On dark shells, some owners use a matching permanent marker or a touch-up pen to reduce contrast, which can work surprisingly well on black, navy or charcoal cases. Test it on the base first.
Stickers are another honest solution. A well-placed travel decal over a gouge on the front panel looks intentional. If a gouge is near a corner or seam and you can see whitening or a hairline crack spreading from it, that is structural, not cosmetic, and you should check whether it is covered by your warranty before the crack grows.
Heat guns, sanding and other risky hacks
Videos online show people using a heat gun or hair dryer to make scratches disappear. Gentle heat can slightly soften and level very fine scratches on some plastics, but it is easy to overdo. Polycarbonate can bubble, warp, discolour or lose its coating, and heat near the frame can weaken adhesive or rivets. On a premium case this is a gamble we do not recommend.
Wet sanding with very fine grit paper followed by compound polishing is how professionals restore car headlights, and it can work on luggage. But it removes the factory texture and coating, so it suits only glossy, uncoated shells and only if you are comfortable with the risk. For most people, accepting a few character marks is cheaper than ruining a ₹20,000 case.
How to prevent new scratches
Prevention is far easier than repair. A stretchable luggage cover protects the shell from belt and loader scuffs and is especially worth it for glossy, light-coloured or metallic cases on international routes with long transfers. Choose a breathable cover and remove it after the trip so moisture does not get trapped underneath.
When buying, choose a textured or matte finish if you check in often, and keep glossy shells for cabin use, where you control the handling. At home, store the case in its dust bag rather than stacking other luggage on top. In cab boots and train compartments, place the case on its back panel rather than sliding it in against metal edges. And roll rather than drag it over rough surfaces such as gravel driveways at resorts.
Matte, glossy and metallic finishes compared
Matte and textured finishes diffuse light, so a scratch reads as a faint line rather than a bright streak. They also resist the shiny patches that polishing creates on glossy cases, but they are easy to over-polish into a smooth spot, so use the lightest touch. Brushed-effect and ribbed shells hide marks in their pattern and are the most forgiving to live with.
Glossy finishes are the hardest to keep perfect. Every scuff catches light, and even microfibre cloths can leave faint swirls if there is grit on them. They do respond best to polishing, though, because the smooth surface can be brought back to an even shine. Metallic and pearl finishes often have a printed or coated colour layer, and polishing through it exposes the base plastic, so avoid abrasives entirely on these and stick to soap and water.
Light colours such as white, cream and blush hide scratches reasonably well but show dirt and belt marks clearly, so they need more cleaning. Dark colours hide dirt but make whitened scratches more visible. Mid-tones like grey, olive and dusty blue are the practical middle ground if appearance after many trips matters to you.
When scratches mean it is time to upgrade
Assemble a small kit and store it with your luggage: two microfibre cloths, a melamine sponge cut into small cubes, a tube of plastic polish, cotton buds, a little isopropyl alcohol, and a dark touch-up marker if your case is black or navy. With this, most post-trip marks take five minutes to deal with. Cleaning promptly also matters, because grime settles into scratches and makes them look darker over time.
Scratches alone are rarely a reason to replace a well-functioning suitcase. A case with smooth wheels, a solid handle and a working zip is still doing its job, scratches or not. But if your shell is covered in gouges, has whitened stress lines around the corners and the wheels have begun to wobble, the case is ageing structurally, not just cosmetically.
When you do buy again, think about where the premium goes. Better polycarbonate, textured finishes, recessed wheels and corner guards all reduce visible wear. You can pair a scratch-resistant checked case with a sleek tote or sling for the flight itself, and browse our travel bag edit for current options from brands such as Samsonite, Mokobara and American Tourister.
