The fastest method that works
To remove sweat stains from t-shirts, make a paste of two tablespoons baking soda and one tablespoon water, add a few drops of liquid detergent, scrub it into the stain with an old toothbrush, leave it for 30 to 60 minutes, then wash cold as usual. For stubborn yellow underarm marks on white tees, follow with an oxygen bleach soak.
In Indian heat and humidity, sweat stains are almost inevitable. The good news is that most are removable with things already in your kitchen. Below are methods for whites, colours and darks, and a few habits that stop stains forming in the first place.
The key is speed and the right order. Treat stains before washing, avoid heat until the stain is gone, and check the result before drying. Following that sequence solves most underarm problems.

Why sweat stains turn yellow
Sweat itself is mostly water and salt and is nearly colourless. The yellow comes from a reaction between proteins in sweat and the aluminium compounds found in many antiperspirants. Over time this mix builds up in the fibres and turns yellow, stiff and sometimes crusty.
Heat sets the stain. Washing in hot water, ironing over a stained area or drying a stained tee in strong sun makes the proteins bond more tightly to cotton.
On dark tees, the problem often looks white or chalky. That is deodorant residue sitting on the surface, which needs a different approach from yellowing on white tees.
Polyester and synthetic tees can trap oily residue too, causing both discolouration and lingering odour.
Body chemistry also plays a part. Some people naturally produce sweat that stains more, and certain foods, medicines or hormonal changes can change sweat composition. If you notice a sudden increase in staining, it is not just your laundry routine.
Sweat stains are more noticeable in humid cities like Mumbai and Chennai because tees stay damp longer, giving the residue more time to settle into the fibres.
Method 1: baking soda paste
Baking soda is a gentle alkaline cleaner that loosens protein and oil. Mix it with a little water into a thick paste and spread it generously over both sides of the stain.
Scrub gently with a soft toothbrush in circles. Let it sit for at least 30 minutes, or up to two hours for older stains.
Rinse with cold water and wash as normal. Check the area before drying; if traces remain, repeat rather than drying, since drying can set the remaining stain.
This works on whites and colours and is safe for most cottons and blends.
For a quick, gentle variation, mix baking soda with a little hydrogen peroxide instead of water on white cotton. Test on a hidden area first, as peroxide can lighten colours.
Method 2: white vinegar soak
White vinegar breaks down deodorant build-up and neutralises odour. Mix one part vinegar with two parts cold water in a bucket and soak the tees inside out for 30 minutes.
For a stronger treatment, apply undiluted vinegar directly to the underarm area, leave for 15 minutes, then sprinkle baking soda on top. It will fizz; that is fine. Scrub lightly and rinse.
Vinegar is especially useful for gym tees and polyester tees that smell even after washing.
Do not combine vinegar with chlorine bleach; the fumes are harmful.
Vinegar can also be added to the rinse cycle of your washing machine, about half a cup, to reduce odour and residue in everyday loads. The smell disappears once the clothes dry.
After a vinegar soak, rinse well in cold water before washing so that no acidic residue stays in the fabric, especially on delicate blends and coloured tees.
Method 3: lemon and salt for white tees
Lemon juice is a mild natural bleaching agent. Squeeze fresh lemon over the stain, sprinkle salt and rub it in with your fingers or a brush.
Leave the tee in gentle sunlight, such as on a balcony in the morning, for an hour. The lemon and light work together to lighten yellow marks.
Rinse well and wash. Use this only on white cotton, since lemon can lighten coloured fabric unevenly.
Avoid strong noon sun for long periods; it can weaken fibres and fade print.
Lemon works best on fresh to medium-age stains. For very old, crusty yellowing, combine it with an oxygen bleach soak for better results.
Method 4: oxygen bleach for stubborn yellowing
Oxygen bleach, sold as stain-remover powders or liquids based on sodium percarbonate, is gentler on fabric than chlorine bleach and safe for most whites and many colours. Always check the product's instructions.
Dissolve it in lukewarm water as directed and soak the tee for a few hours or overnight. Then wash normally.
For old, crusty stains, combine methods: baking soda paste first, then an oxygen bleach soak.
Avoid chlorine bleach on underarm stains. It can react with sweat proteins and actually make the yellow worse, as well as weakening cotton.
After treating, check carefully in daylight. Underarm stains can look gone when wet but reappear when dry. If you can still see a ring, repeat the treatment before putting the tee through another full wash.
For black and navy tees with stubborn salt lines from dried sweat, a quick rinse in cold water with a splash of vinegar usually lifts the marks before they set.
Turn dark tees inside out before washing and drying. This keeps the outside colour deep and reduces the chalky look that builds up where deodorant meets fabric.
Deodorant marks on black t-shirts
For fresh white streaks, rub the fabric against itself, using another part of the tee, and the residue often disappears. A dry, clean sock or a nylon stocking works too.
For build-up, apply a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and water, let it sit 15 minutes, then wash inside out in cold water. Dry in shade to keep the black deep.
Switch to a clear gel or invisible-formula deodorant on days you wear dark tees, and let it dry fully before dressing.
Avoid baking soda paste on very dark tees for long periods, as it can leave a light patch if not rinsed thoroughly.
For coloured tees, avoid lemon and use dish soap or oxygen bleach suitable for colours. Always spot-test on a hidden seam first.
Wear a light inner layer under special white tees during long summer days, such as a seamless cotton camisole. It absorbs most sweat before it reaches the outer tee, and it is far easier to wash and replace.
Some women find aluminium-free deodorants cause less yellowing. They do not stop sweat entirely, but they reduce the chemical reaction that causes stubborn stains on white cotton.
Finally, rotate your tees. Tees that are worn and washed constantly in summer build up residue faster, while a larger rotation gives each tee time to be cleaned thoroughly.
How to prevent sweat stains
Apply deodorant or antiperspirant at night or at least a few minutes before dressing, and let it dry completely. Use less product; more does not mean more protection, just more residue.
Wash tees soon after a sweaty day rather than leaving them in a pile for a week. Rinse the underarm area with cold water if you cannot wash immediately.
Choose breathable fabrics like cotton, modal and bamboo for hot days, and loose or relaxed fits that allow air to circulate under the arms. Sweat-proof underarm shields are another option for important events.
Wear an inner cotton camisole under special tees or silk tops during a sangeet or summer wedding to protect them from sweat.
