The right bag for a Rishikesh yoga retreat
For a one to two week Rishikesh yoga retreat or ashram stay, the best bag is a 40 to 60 litre soft duffle or travel backpack, plus a yoga mat strap or tote and a small sling bag. Rishikesh is walkable, hilly in parts, and ashrams and retreat centres around Tapovan, Laxman Jhula and Ram Jhula are often reached via pedestrian bridges, narrow lanes and steps, where a trolley is hard work.
If you are booked into a luxury wellness resort higher up in the hills with car access, a cabin spinner is fine. But for most retreats and ashrams, think soft and carry-friendly.

Why soft luggage suits Rishikesh
Ram Jhula and Laxman Jhula are suspension bridges for pedestrians and two-wheelers, and many retreat centres sit on the far side of the Ganga from the main road. Taxis often drop you a short walk away, and the final stretch involves crowds, cows, scooters and steps. A duffle with backpack straps or a travel backpack keeps your hands free and lets you move easily.
Ashram rooms are usually simple, with a bed, a small shelf or cupboard, and sometimes shared bathrooms. A soft bag can be pushed under the bed or into a corner. A hard-shell suitcase needs floor space to open and can feel out of place in a minimalist retreat setting.
Look for a bag with a U-shaped opening, so you can see everything without unpacking, and a separate compartment for your yoga mat towel or shoes.
Travel backpacks with a clamshell opening, like a suitcase, are another excellent choice. They open flat on a bed, have padded hip belts for the walk from the taxi, and usually include a laptop sleeve if you plan to journal or work during free afternoons. Volumes of 40 to 45 litres often meet cabin size limits on domestic airlines, which means no waiting at the baggage belt in Dehradun.
If you prefer the look of leather, a leather-trimmed canvas duffle is a good compromise. It feels warmer and more personal than technical nylon, but it is lighter than full leather and copes better with the occasional splash from the river or a monsoon shower.
What to pack for an ashram or retreat
Yoga wear: three or four sets of breathable leggings or loose trousers, with sleeved tops or t-shirts. Many ashrams expect modest dress, covering shoulders and knees, both in classes and around the property. Some prefer white or light-coloured clothing for certain ceremonies, so check your retreat's guidelines.
Daily wear: two or three cotton kurta sets or loose co-ords, a long skirt, a light shawl or stole for temples and the evening Ganga aarti at Parmarth Niketan or Triveni Ghat, and a warm layer such as a fleece or cardigan in winter. Mornings and evenings in Rishikesh can be cold from November to February.
Footwear: slip-on sandals that are easy to remove at temples and yoga halls, plus walking shoes if you plan hikes to waterfalls or Kunjapuri temple at sunrise.
Toiletries: natural or fragrance-free products, sunscreen, mosquito repellent and a small first aid kit. Many retreats discourage strong perfumes.
Small extras that make an ashram stay more comfortable: a reusable water bottle with a filter, a lightweight quick-dry towel, a journal and pen, a small torch for power cuts, earplugs, a padlock if lockers are provided, a travel clothesline, and a little laundry soap. A meditation shawl or a thin blanket is useful for early sessions in cooler months, when halls can be chilly at 5 am.
Season matters too. Summer, from April to June, is hot in the river valley, so pack breathable cotton and linen. The monsoon months bring heavy rain and occasional road disruptions in Uttarakhand, so add a light rain jacket and quick-dry clothing. Winter mornings can be close to single digits, so thermals and a warm cardigan earn their space.
Your yoga mat: carry it or rent it?
Most retreat centres provide mats. If you prefer your own, choose a travel mat of 1.5 to 2 mm thickness that folds into your duffle, rather than a thick 6 mm mat that needs to be strapped outside. A mat strap or a mat bag with a pocket for keys and water is handy for walking to classes.
If you do carry a full mat, strap it to the outside of a backpack or carry it in a tote. On flights to Dehradun's Jolly Grant airport, mats can usually travel as part of your checked or cabin baggage, but confirm with your airline.
Getting there: flights, trains and taxis
Most travellers arrive via Jolly Grant airport near Dehradun, about 35 km away, or by train to Haridwar or Rishikesh, followed by a taxi. Domestic economy fares typically include around 15 kg of check-in and 7 kg of cabin baggage, but this varies by airline and fare. Keep within these limits; with a retreat wardrobe, it is easy.
On trains from Delhi, such as the Shatabdi or Jan Shatabdi to Haridwar, soft bags fit easily on overhead racks or under seats. Keep valuables close and use a small lock on the duffle zips. From Haridwar, shared autos and taxis to Rishikesh are frequent, and a soft bag fits on a lap far better than a suitcase.
Rafting and adventure days
River rafting on the Ganga, usually between September and June, is a popular addition to a Rishikesh trip. Leave your main bag at the retreat. For the day, carry a small dry bag or waterproof pouch with your phone, a towel, sunscreen and a change of clothes. Wear quick-dry clothing and sports sandals with straps, never flip-flops.
For hikes to Neer Garh waterfall or a bungee jumping session, a 15 to 20 litre daypack with water and snacks is enough. Rafting operators usually keep personal items in their vehicles, but avoid bringing valuables.
Many retreat-goers also visit the Beatles Ashram, the cafes of Tapovan and the markets near Laxman Jhula on their free afternoons. A small crossbody bag keeps your phone and cash secure on crowded bridges, where monkeys sometimes target loose items. A foldable tote is useful for books, malas, crystals and Ayurvedic products that you may pick up along the way.
After a rafting day, rinse sandals and dry bags in fresh water and dry them fully before they go back into your duffle, so river silt and damp do not spread to your clean clothes.
Mistakes to avoid at a Rishikesh retreat
Packing tight, revealing or flashy outfits that do not suit ashram dress codes is the most common mistake. Another is overpacking; you will mostly wear simple yoga clothes and kurtas. Some travellers forget warm layers for early-morning meditation in winter, or bring only heavy hiking boots when slip-on sandals are far more practical at temples.
Avoid wheeled hard cases if your retreat is across the river. And remember that Rishikesh is a vegetarian, alcohol-free town, so do not pack items that may be restricted at ashrams, and check your retreat's rules in advance.
Choosing a premium duffle or backpack
A premium duffle or travel backpack, priced from about ₹5,000, typically offers tougher fabric, padded straps, lockable zips, water resistance and better organisation. Leather weekenders from brands like Hidesign or Da Milano look lovely for a boutique wellness resort, while nylon duffles and backpacks from Mokobara, Nasher Miles, Samsonite and Victorinox are lighter and easier to carry over bridges.
The best choice is a bag that feels calm and uncluttered, like the retreat itself. Browse the luxury travel bags edit for duffles and backpacks that make your next mindful trip easier.
A simple retreat packing formula
If you want a quick rule: pack one outfit for each yoga session per day, one modest outfit for each evening, and one warm layer, then halve the total because ashram laundry services are common and inexpensive. Add slip-on sandals, a shawl, a reusable bottle, a journal and a small torch. That is all most women need for a fortnight, and it fits comfortably in a 45 litre duffle with room to spare for incense, malas, singing bowls and books bought along the way.
