Schengen Multi-Country Trip Luggage: Pack for 5 Countries

Published by the Style Desk

Planning a Schengen multi-country trip? The luggage setup, packing system and document pouch that make five countries in two weeks easy for Indian women.

Schengen trip luggage: one system for many countries

For a Schengen multi-country trip, pack one medium spinner of no more than 65 to 68 cm, one under-seat personal item that meets the strictest airline on your route, and a document pouch that stays on your body. Moving through five countries in two weeks means repacking every second or third night, so a system matters more than the bag itself.

Indian travellers often design ambitious itineraries to make the most of a Schengen visa: Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris, Switzerland, Milan, Venice, Florence and Rome in fifteen days is common. Each border is invisible inside the Schengen area, but each change of city brings a train, a bus or a short flight, a new hotel and a fresh round of carrying luggage.

The goal is simple: be able to pack up and leave any hotel in ten minutes, and be able to carry everything you own up one flight of stairs without help. If your luggage passes those two tests, the rest of the trip will feel easy.

Plan around the strictest leg

Most multi-country trips combine a long-haul flight from India with a generous checked allowance and at least one intra-Europe leg on a budget airline, where checked bags are paid extras and the free cabin item may be no larger than a small backpack that fits under the seat. Your packing must work for that strictest leg, not the easiest one.

Look at every flight, train and bus on your itinerary before buying luggage. Trains are usually relaxed, with luggage carried by passengers to racks, while coaches have hold allowances that vary by operator. Note each limit in your itinerary document and pre-pay checked bags online where needed, which is generally cheaper than paying at the airport.

If one leg is particularly strict, consider replacing it with a train. Routes such as Paris to Amsterdam, Zurich to Milan or Florence to Rome are often as quick door-to-door by rail, with no baggage fees and far less stress about weight.

A simple spreadsheet or note listing every leg with its carrier, departure time and luggage rule is worth twenty minutes of planning. Share it with your travel partner so both of you know which day needs the lighter bag and which airport needs extra time.

Packing cubes: the multi-country secret

Packing cubes turn a suitcase into a chest of drawers. Use one large cube for tops, one for bottoms and dresses, a small cube for undergarments and socks, a slim cube for thermals or sleepwear, and a laundry bag for worn clothes. At each hotel you lift cubes out, and at checkout you drop them back in, with no rummaging and nothing left behind in a drawer.

Colour-code cubes if you are sharing a suitcase with a partner or a child. Keep a separate flat pouch for chargers, adaptors and cables, and a hanging toiletry kit that you can hook on the back of a bathroom door in any hotel.

Compression cubes save volume but not weight. They are ideal for bulky knits and jackets, but be careful not to overfill a suitcase just because the cubes make space; you still have to lift it onto every train rack between Amsterdam and Rome.

Label each cube clearly if your family shares a suitcase, so anyone can find things quickly.

The document pouch you never take off

Schengen travel requires you to keep your passport with visa, travel insurance, hotel bookings and return tickets handy, as checks can happen at airports and occasionally at internal borders. Keep originals in a slim zipped pouch inside your crossbody or a concealed travel belt, and a full set of photocopies in your suitcase.

Also keep digital copies on your phone and email them to yourself. If your passport is lost or stolen in a busy station, these copies make the process with the Indian embassy or consulate much faster.

Your crossbody should be zip-top, worn in front, and large enough only for the pouch, phone, a card, a little cash and lipstick. Anything larger becomes heavy after ten hours of sightseeing.

Some travellers also carry a spare passport-size photo or two; they are handy if you need an emergency certificate from an Indian mission.

A capsule wardrobe that works in every country

Weather in a single trip can range from a cool spring morning in Amsterdam to a hot afternoon in Rome, or from snow at Jungfraujoch to a mild evening in Paris. Build a capsule around three neutral colours, such as navy, beige and white, with one accent, and choose pieces that layer: tees, a shirt, a fine knit, a light jacket and a trench.

A realistic list for two weeks: two trousers, one pair of jeans, one midi skirt, two dresses, five tops, one knit, a trench, a packable down jacket if you are going to the Alps, and sleepwear. Footwear: one pair of cushioned sneakers, one pair of loafers or flats and one pair of ankle boots. Accessories: a silk scarf, sunglasses and a watch.

Plan to do laundry once, around day seven, at a laundrette or the hotel. Quick-drying fabrics make sink washing easy, so you can pack for seven days and wear for fourteen.

Train days and luggage handling

On train days, wear your heaviest shoes and jacket, keep snacks and water in your personal item, and board early so you can secure rack space. Large bags go in racks at the end of carriages or above seats; medium bags often slide between back-to-back seats. Keep an eye on bags at stops, especially on busy routes in Italy.

A thin cable lock is useful to secure a bag to a rack if you want to sleep or move to the cafe car. It will not stop a determined thief but deters opportunists.

Stations like Milano Centrale, Roma Termini and Paris Gare du Nord are large and busy. Allow time to find your platform, and avoid accepting help from strangers offering to carry your bag.

Pack one slightly dressier outfit that works everywhere: a wrap dress or a silk blouse with tailored trousers covers an opera evening in Vienna, a canal-side dinner in Amsterdam and a terrace meal in Rome without needing a separate outfit for each city.

Shopping across five countries

With so many cities, shopping adds up: chocolate in Brussels, cheese in Switzerland, leather in Florence, perfume in Paris. Leave a quarter of your suitcase empty, and carry a foldable duffle for the return flight to India if your long-haul allowance includes a second bag.

If your itinerary includes budget airline legs, buy bulky items towards the end of the trip, ideally in the city you fly home from, so you are not carrying them on strict flights.

Keep receipts for tax-free shopping, which is usually processed at the final Schengen exit point, so allow extra time at the airport on your last day.

Keep a running list on your phone of what you have bought and where. It helps with customs declarations on your return to India, keeps track of tax refund forms, and stops you buying the same gift twice in different cities.

Choosing your multi-country suitcase

Look for a lightweight polycarbonate spinner with large double wheels, a firm telescopic handle, top and side grab handles, a TSA lock and an interior with a divider and compression straps. Brands such as Samsonite, Delsey, Mokobara, Nasher Miles and American Tourister offer medium spinners in this style, typically from around ₹7,000 for good mid-range quality.

For the personal item, choose a structured backpack or tote that fits under a seat and slides over your suitcase handle. It becomes your carry-all on travel days and your day bag in cities.

Explore our luxury travel bags to build a setup that makes your Schengen trip effortless.

Couples on a Schengen trip often find that two medium spinners are easier than one large and one cabin bag. Each person handles their own bag on stairs and trains, and if one bag is delayed on a connecting flight, both travellers still have some of their clothes.
