School hairstyles for girls that meet the rules
The best school hairstyles for girls are double plaits, two ponytails, a single French braid, a neat bun and a half-up with a ribbon. These keep hair tidy, follow most Indian school uniform rules, stay in place through PT and recess, and take a parent five minutes or less on a rushed morning.
Many schools in India still require hair to be tied, often in two plaits with ribbons or bands in the school colour, especially for girls with hair below the shoulders. Rules vary, so check the handbook, but the styles in this guide work within almost all of them.
Below you will find plaits, ponies, buns and short-hair options, with steps for parents, a few tips for older students doing their own hair, and how to keep little scalps comfortable and lice-free.

Classic double plaits, done neatly
The traditional double plait, or two choti, is the most common school style in India for good reason. It keeps hair secure for eight hours and stops it from tangling during play. Start with a clean centre part made with the tail of a comb from forehead to nape.
Clip one side away. Brush the other side smooth with a little water or a drop of light oil, divide it into three sections and plait down to the ends. Secure with a band and tie the ribbon in a neat bow. Repeat on the other side, making sure both plaits start at the same height behind the ears.
For a cleaner look, fold each plait up and tie it near the base with the ribbon, which creates a loop plait. It keeps long ends from being pulled during games and looks very tidy for assemblies.
Choose ribbons and bands that suit the uniform rules. Many schools specify colours, often black, navy, maroon or white, and some do not allow decorative clips at all. Plain satin ribbons are gentler on hair than nylon ones and tie neater bows. Keep a few spares in the school bag, because ribbons go missing almost as often as water bottles, and a loose plait after lunch is a familiar story for every parent.
Ponytail styles for busy mornings
Two ponytails are quicker than plaits and suit medium-length hair. Part down the middle, brush each side and tie just behind the ears. Wrap a small strand around each band for extra neatness if the school allows plain bands.
A single high pony is fine for many schools and great for older girls. To stop it loosening by lunch, use two bands, one at the base and one an inch below. For PT days, plait the pony after tying it.
The bubble pony is a fun option for non-uniform days, birthdays and school trips. Add small bands every two inches down the pony and puff out each section. Kids love the look and it holds well.
French and Dutch braids for sports and long days
A single French braid down the back is ideal for sports days, swimming lessons and annual function rehearsals because nothing comes loose. Start at the top of the head with three small sections and add hair from both sides with each cross until you reach the nape, then plait the rest normally.
Two Dutch braids are even more secure and very popular with older girls. Crossing strands underneath instead of over makes the braid stand out from the head. They last through a full school day and even overnight, so you can redo them every other day.
If you are learning, practise on a weekend when nobody is late. Most parents get the hang of French braiding within three or four tries.
If your daughter complains that braids feel tight or give her a headache, it is a sign that the tension is too strong, especially at the hairline. Braid more loosely at the front and slightly firmer towards the nape. Children's scalps are sensitive, and a comfortable braid they do not tug at all day will actually stay neater than a tight one that they keep scratching and pulling.
Neat buns and half-up styles
For dance classes, NCC drills or schools that ask for hair to be tied up, a neat bun works best. Tie a high or mid pony, twist it, coil it around the band and secure with a bun net or a few U-pins. A bun cover in the school colour finishes it.
Half-up styles are good for girls with shorter or shoulder-length hair if the school allows partly open hair. Tie the top section with a ribbon or a small clip and keep the rest brushed.
A braided crown, where two thin side braids are pinned across the back of the head, is a pretty choice for annual day or a class photo, and it keeps the face clear.
Hairstyles for short hair and bobs
Short hair still needs to stay out of eyes during class. Two small clips on each side, pinning the front sections back, is the simplest and most comfortable option for a bob.
A tiny half-up pony or two mini ponies on the top section work for slightly longer bobs. Use small snag-free bands so you do not tug on delicate baby hair.
For fringes, either pin them sideways with a flat clip or use a thin hairband. Hairbands are also helpful for keeping short layers off the forehead during exams.
Keeping school hair healthy and lice-free
Avoid tying hair too tight every single day. Constant pulling at the same spot can cause breakage and sore scalps in children. Alternate between plaits, ponies and buns, and loosen the style after school.
Head lice spread easily in classrooms. Tied-up hair, especially plaits and buns, reduces contact with other children's hair. Check the scalp weekly with a fine-tooth comb and wash combs and bands regularly. Do not share combs or hairbands between friends.
Comb out hair gently from the ends upwards. A light oil massage once or twice a week, washed out properly, keeps hair soft and easier to plait on school mornings.
A weekly school hairstyle plan for parents
Planning hair for the week saves morning fights. On Monday, after the weekend wash, do neat double plaits for assembly. On Tuesday, the plaits can be loosened into two ponytails for a quick change. On Wednesday, if there is PT or a sports period, switch to a French braid or two Dutch braids that will stay put through games.
On Thursday, Dutch braids from Wednesday night often still look tidy and can be re-tied at the ends, saving ten minutes. Friday is a good day for a neat bun or a high pony, especially if there is a dance or activity period. Save fancy bubble ponies, ribbons in fun colours and braided crowns for non-uniform days, birthdays and class trips.
Keep a small basket near the mirror with a wide-tooth comb, a tail comb for parting, ribbons and bands in the school colour, a spray bottle of water, and a few U-pins. When everything is in one place, even a French braid takes under five minutes on a rushed school morning.
Tips for teenagers styling their own hair
Teenagers can easily master a high pony, a low bun and a side braid. Practise in front of a mirror, keep everything you need on the dressing table, and do your hair before getting dressed so you can use both arms freely.
Learn to braid with your hands behind your head by first practising on a pony that is pulled over your shoulder. Once your fingers know the pattern, move it to the back.
Keep a spare band on your wrist. A hairstyle that loosens after PT can be quickly re-tied in the washroom between periods.
