A soft weekender, by contrast, slides under the seat or onto the rack, and you can pull out a shawl or snacks without disturbing other passengers.

If you are taking a Shatabdi from Delhi to Kalka first, keep in mind you will change trains on a busy platform. Mistakes that make Shimla weekends harder

If you are flying home from Chandigarh or Delhi after the weekend, remember that liquids such as pickles, honey and preserves in jars are generally not allowed in cabin baggage beyond the usual small-container limit. Pack them in checked luggage, sealed in zip-lock bags, or buy them in sealed packs. On the toy train and Shatabdi there is no liquids rule, which is one more reason the rail route suits shoppers.
