Ski trip luggage guide: what most skiers need
A practical ski trip luggage setup is a 70 to 100 litre wheeled duffle for ski clothing and layers, a dedicated boot bag or backpack for boots, helmet and goggles, and a small daypack for the slopes. Most Indian skiers rent skis and poles at the resort, so you rarely need a ski bag unless you own your equipment.
Ski holidays have become popular with Indian travellers, from Gulmarg and Auli at home to Switzerland, Austria, France, Japan and Georgia abroad. Ski gear is bulky, wet after use and heavy, which makes luggage choices more important than on a regular winter trip.
This guide focuses on packing and luggage for skiing and snowboarding, from flights to chalet.
Skiing seasons differ by destination. Gulmarg's season usually runs from December to March, with the best snow often in January and February. Auli's is shorter and more weather-dependent. The Alps run roughly from December to April, and Japan's Hokkaido is famous for its powder from December to February. Your luggage plan should reflect how cold and snowy the destination is and how long you will stay.

Rent or bring your own gear?
Beginners and occasional skiers typically rent skis, poles, boots and helmets at the resort. This removes the need for a ski bag and oversize baggage fees. Gulmarg and Auli have rental shops near the slopes, and Alpine resorts have extensive rental networks.
Many intermediate skiers bring their own boots for comfort, as well-fitted boots make a big difference. Boots and helmets can go in a boot bag as checked luggage or in your cabin bag if size allows.
If you own skis, use a padded ski bag and check with your airline about sports equipment allowances and fees, which vary widely.
Rental gear also changes what you need to pack for comfort. Even with rented boots, many skiers bring their own ski socks, which are thin, tall and cushioned in the right places, as well as their own goggles and gloves for hygiene and fit. These are light and compact, and they make a rented setup feel far more comfortable.
Choosing the main ski luggage
Wheeled duffles are the favourite among skiers. They swallow bulky jackets and salopettes, have rugged inline wheels that roll on snow-dusted paths, and carry handles for stairs. Look for coated fabric, a wide opening and a stiff base.
Hard-shell spinners work for ski holidays too, especially if you stay in a hotel with paved access. They protect contents from snow and handling, but small spinner wheels struggle in snow.
Size depends on gear: a 90 to 100 litre duffle suits a week of ski wear and après-ski clothes for one person.
Look at the duffle's base and wheels. A thick coated base resists snow and slush, and large inline wheels handle packed snow far better than small spinners. Grab handles at both ends let two people lift the bag into a jeep or onto a gondola. Compression straps keep the load tight, and a separate end pocket keeps wet items away from clean clothes.
Packing ski clothing
Base layers: two or three thermal tops and leggings in merino or synthetic. Mid-layers: a fleece and a light down jacket. Outer layers: a waterproof ski jacket and ski trousers. Accessories: ski socks, waterproof gloves, liner gloves, a neck gaiter, a beanie and goggles.
Pack ski jacket and trousers in a compression cube, base layers rolled, and socks in a separate pouch. Wear your ski jacket on the flight to save space.
Après-ski outfits are casual: jeans, jumpers, boots and a warm coat for evenings in the village.
Avoid cotton in your ski kit. Cotton absorbs sweat and snowmelt, stays wet and makes you cold. Merino wool and synthetic layers dry faster and stay warm when damp. This also helps your luggage, as quick-drying layers are less likely to make the duffle damp and smelly on the way home.
Boots, helmet and goggles
Ski boots are heavy and bulky. A dedicated boot bag, often a backpack with compartments for boots and helmet, protects them and keeps your duffle clean. Many skiers carry the boot bag as cabin luggage so their boots never get lost, but check your airline's cabin size and weight rules.
Goggles should travel in a soft case inside the helmet to avoid scratches. Sunglasses for sunny days on the slopes are useful too.
Dry boots fully before packing them for the return, and add odour sachets.
Helmets are bulky, so use the space inside them. Stuff the helmet with goggles in their case, a neck gaiter, gloves and socks. That way the helmet protects the goggles and nothing is wasted. Place the helmet in the boot bag or at the top of the duffle, where it will not be crushed.
Airline baggage for ski trips
International carriers often allow 23 to 30 kg in economy, while Indian domestic flights to Srinagar or Dehradun typically allow around 15 kg checked. Ski gear can exceed these quickly, so weigh your bags and prebook extra baggage if needed.
Some airlines treat ski bags as sports equipment with special allowances; others charge oversize fees. Always confirm with your airline before booking.
Keep your boots, a base layer and goggles in your cabin bag so you can still ski if checked luggage is delayed.
Travel insurance with winter sports cover is important for ski trips, and some policies require that you carry certain documents or follow resort rules. Keep a copy of your policy, emergency numbers and medical information in your cabin bag and on your phone, separate from checked luggage.
Book any extra baggage online when you book the ticket, because adding it later or paying at the airport counter is usually more expensive, especially in peak ski weeks around Christmas and New Year.
On the slopes: daypacks and pockets
A small 15 to 20 litre daypack holds water, snacks, sunscreen, a spare layer and a phone. Many skiers prefer jacket pockets and a slim belt bag to keep weight low.
Choose a daypack with chest and waist straps so it stays stable while skiing, and a back-panel zip for security.
Keep your phone in an inner pocket close to the body; cold drains batteries fast.
Sun is a surprisingly big issue at altitude. Snow reflects UV strongly, so pack a high-SPF sunscreen, lip balm with SPF and good goggles or sunglasses. Keep a small tube of sunscreen in a jacket pocket and reapply at lunch.
Drying and caring for gear and bags
Ski clothing gets wet from snow and sweat. Dry gear in the ski room or near heaters provided at chalets, never directly on hot radiators, which can damage fabrics and boots.
Wipe snow and salt off duffles and wheels each evening. Before the flight home, dry everything thoroughly; packing damp gear leads to smells and mould.
At home, wash base layers and gloves, clean the duffle and store it with silica gel.
Ski resorts often have boot rooms with heaters and lockers. Use them, as they dry boots overnight and keep them out of your room. Ask your hotel or chalet about drying facilities before arrival, so you know whether to pack a portable boot dryer.
Choosing a ski trip bag set
A wheeled duffle, a boot bag and a daypack make the ideal ski set. Brands like Samsonite and American Tourister offer duffles and spinners, while outdoor specialists offer boot bags. Prices for good duffles start around ₹5,000.
For a stylish arrival at a luxury chalet, add a leather weekender for après-ski clothes, kept away from snow.
Prepare well, and your ski holiday will be about fresh powder rather than baggage stress. Explore our edit.
Before you book, list every piece of gear you plan to bring and estimate its weight. Boots alone can weigh three to four kilograms per pair, and a full ski outfit adds several more. That simple list tells you whether one duffle and a boot bag will work within your airline's allowance, or whether you should rent more at the resort and travel lighter.
