Solo mom travelling with kids: the hands-free rule
When you are a solo mom travelling with kids, the luggage rule is hands-free first: one spinner you can push with one hand, a backpack on your back for everything urgent, and a small backpack for each child old enough to carry one. That leaves one hand for a child and one for the suitcase, which is exactly how many hands you have. Anything that needs to be carried in a hand, such as a second trolley or a loose tote, is one bag too many.
Many Indian mothers travel alone with children, whether flying to see grandparents during school holidays while a partner works, heading to a family wedding, or living as single parents who simply do everything themselves. The airport, the train station and the hotel lobby all look different when there is no second adult to watch the bags while you take a child to the washroom.
This guide builds a system for exactly that situation: the bags, the packing, the routines and the small tricks that make it possible to travel calmly as the only grown-up.

The main bag: one spinner, pushed not pulled
A four-wheel spinner is essential because you can push it beside you with one hand while holding a child's hand with the other. Two-wheel cases need tilting and steady pulling, which is hard to do while also steering a toddler. Choose polycarbonate for low weight, double wheels for smooth rolling and a telescopic handle that locks firmly at a comfortable height.
For a week, one medium 65 to 68 cm case usually holds clothes for a mother and two young children, because kids' clothes are small. If you need more space, a single large case is still easier than two mediums when you are alone, since you can only push one at a time. Check your airline's weight limit per bag, often around 23 kilos on international economy and around 15 kilos on many domestic fares.
Brands such as American Tourister, Safari, VIP, Samsonite and Mokobara make suitable spinners, many from about ₹5,000. If you travel alone with kids often, smoother wheels and a good warranty are worth paying a little more for.
Your backpack is your command centre
Forget a shoulder tote; it slips off when you bend down to a child. A 20 to 30 litre backpack with a front organiser pocket and a trolley sleeve keeps both hands free. Put passports, tickets, phone, wallet, medicines, snacks, wipes, a spare outfit for each child and a few small toys in it.
Organise it in zones: documents in a hidden back pocket, snacks and wipes in the top pocket, children's spare clothes in a packing cube at the bottom, chargers in a small pouch. When a child spills juice at the gate, you know exactly where to reach without emptying the bag.
Slide the backpack's trolley sleeve over the spinner's handle when walking long distances, so the weight comes off your shoulders.
Kids carry their own
From around four years old, children can carry a small backpack with their water bottle, a jacket, a snack, a book and a small toy. It keeps them involved and saves your space.
Older children can push a light cabin spinner of their own, which frees space in the main case. Teach them to keep it beside them, never left behind at a counter.
Write your phone number on a card inside each child's bag and on a band on their wrist for busy airports and stations.
Make it a game rather than a chore. Let each child choose a bag colour and pack a few favourite items under your supervision, then give them a job at each stage of the journey: holding their own boarding pass at the gate, spotting the family suitcase on the belt or counting the bags before leaving the hotel. Children who feel part of the team are calmer and more cooperative, and you gain an extra pair of eyes when you are the only adult.
Airport tactics for one adult
Check in the main case as early as possible, so you move through the airport with only backpacks. Many airlines offer family check-in lanes and priority boarding for families; ask.
At security, put the trays through in a set order: children's bags, then yours, then the laptop and liquids, and keep children in front of you as they walk through. Collect everything at the end before moving.
Use washrooms before boarding and before landing. Taking two children into a washroom with a cabin bag is hard; another reason to check in big bags.
If your children are very young, a lightweight stroller that folds with one hand is invaluable. Many airlines let you use it up to the aircraft door and return it at the gate or baggage reclaim, but policies vary, so check in advance. A soft baby carrier is another option for a toddler, leaving the stroller for the older child or for bags. Plan your route through the terminal in advance using the airport map, so you know where washrooms, play areas and food courts are.
On the plane
Put the backpack under the seat in front, not in the overhead bin, so you can reach snacks and wipes. Ask cabin crew for help lifting anything into the bin.
Book seats together, ideally with the children by the window and middle and you on the aisle. Bring headphones, a downloaded show and a couple of new small toys for each child.
Keep a pen and the passports in the same pocket for arrival forms on international trips.
Long-haul flights need a little more planning. Pack each child a small activity pouch for every few hours of the flight, with a new colouring book, stickers or a puzzle, and bring them out one at a time. Dress children in comfortable layers and pack pyjamas for overnight flights, so the bedtime routine stays familiar. Request child meals when booking if your airline offers them.
Trains and cabs
On Indian trains, book lower and middle berths together and keep the spinner under your berth with a cable lock. Keep the backpack with you as a pillow at night.
For cabs, load the bags yourself and seat the children first. Keep the backpack on your lap.
Pre-book transfers so you are not negotiating with children and bags at arrivals.
If the train journey is overnight, prepare a small night pouch with toothbrushes, a change of clothes and a torch in the top of your backpack so you do not open the spinner in a dim coach. Choose berths away from the doors for less foot traffic and keep the children on the inner side. Carry a light blanket and a small pillow for each child, as coaches can get cold at night.
Packing list for a solo mom and two kids
Each child: one outfit per day plus two spares, sleepwear, a jacket, swimwear if needed, two pairs of shoes and a comfort toy. Mom: a capsule wardrobe, one dressier outfit, comfortable shoes, a light layer and toiletries.
Shared: medicines, a first-aid kit, sunscreen, chargers, a power bank, snacks, wipes and a laundry bag.
Backpack: documents, phone, wallet, snacks, a change of clothes for each child, small toys and medicines.
Pack each day's outfits for the children together in labelled zip bags, so mornings are quick and you are not hunting for matching socks in a hotel room. Put one zip bag of emergency clothes for each child in your backpack as well, not just in the suitcase. A small laundry bag keeps dirty clothes separate, and a few disposable bags handle wet swimwear and accidents.
Confidence and support
Ask for help when you need it. Airline staff, porters and fellow travellers are usually kind to parents travelling alone.
Travel light, plan ahead and keep routines simple. With the right bags, solo travel with kids becomes a confident adventure.
Celebrate the small wins: a smooth security check, a happy flight, a calm arrival.
Before the trip, talk to the children about what will happen at the airport or station, step by step, so nothing comes as a surprise. Children cope much better when they know the plan. Keep a printed list of key information, such as booking references, addresses and emergency numbers, in your backpack in case your phone battery runs out. And remember that a delay or a meltdown is part of travelling with children, not a failure; staying calm is the best thing you can model for them.
